I will try a socket again, though I was getting enough torque on it that the socket got stuck on the bolt on my last attempt and actually is starting to round the bolt (and this is with 19mm not a 3/4). I can't get a long bar in there since its still in the engine and there isn't clearance to come out the top... LOL - it this doesn't work I am going to have it towed to the mechanic down the street and pay him $50 bucks to take it off and save my sanity! |

Seriously, it is a month later and I've tried the propane torch, PB blaster and bought a 425 lbs impact gun and this thing still won't come off...I am getting a good grip with a phillips in the "holding" hole and wedgeing it with a large flat head. The gun (using a new 19mm impact socket, btw) just sits and hits but it doesn't budge... Any other thoughts...? At my wits end with this thing... |

x2 Or if the motor won't start or is out of the car I found that lots of PB Blaster and the use of a propane torch (obviously not at the same time) works well. Not to be naive (LOL) but what is PB Blaster? I got everything apart (and the batter is also dead) so starting it is not an easy option...however, it is helpful to note that it is probably a 19mm, which will give me a little snugger fit, since I have been using a 3/4". Should at least prevent any more rounding to the bolt. Not sure what my impact gun is rated for, but I will check on that, too. Thanks for all the good suggestions, at least gets me going in the right direction, I hope! |

I have a 1996 Celica GTS Convertible with a 2.2. I need to replace the water pump and to do that need to remove the timing belt (arrgh!!!). I got it to to TDC and have good access to the 3/4" bolt and am using an impact wrench but still cannot get the bolt to come off. My impact wrench just goes and goes and my concern is that it is actually starting to round the bolt. Any suggestions on how to get this thing off? Thanks! Wil |

Hello, The power window regulator has gone bad in my 1996 Celica GT-S Convertible. There is a good deal for one on E-bay but it from a gen 7 Celica. From the pictures it sure looks exactly like the one I took out of mine! Does anyone know if these parts cross-over? Thanks! |

Thanks that is some good help. I will probably get the cheap thermometer (would be good to have anyways) and also change the stat. Since it got hot I should change the stat anyways...plus, they are like $10 and easy to get to... |

I have a 1996 GT Convertible. Runs absolutely fine, except on occasion (it has happened about three times in the last month) I look down and the temperature gauge is well higher than it usually is at. Usually it is stuck - like a rock - a little under halfway up the gauge. When it does this, I look down it is probably 60-70% up the gauge. All three times it has done this I have been stuck in traffic stopped with the A/C on. Now, here is the weird part. I turn on the heater and immediately goes back to normal (which isn't a surprise since it adds in the extra heater radiator) but then I can immediately turn the heater off, turn back on the A/C and it is fine. Last time it did this I popped the hood prior to putting the heater on and the fan was going full speed, so that isn't it. Also, I let it sit for a while and the gauge didn't seem to be moving towards overheating - but was just running hotter than usually (within the normal range, but certainly abnormal considering the temperature in this thing has never previously gone over its usual spot) My guess is that it is a failing thermostat and that somehow putting the heater on gets it to fully open and then things are normal. What do you all think? Any other ideas? |

My son thought it looked like the Mach 5 off of the Speed Racer movie, so he started calling it the Mach 5 and it stuck...thinking of having the emblem put on the hood... |

Does anything else make them different outside of the stickers and embroidery? I have a 1996 GT-S Convertible and thinking it could be a limited edition pretty quick! Lol... |

NO ebay headers for 2 holes for oxygen sensors. the 2 oxygen sensor are for California celicas only. the headers are meant for celicas that werent made in CA. OK - I am in California. Not sure if mine has two sensors, however, the headers on e-bay are in California. I am going to ask them about the sensors. I asked them about the sensor holes and they said theirs only has one. I checked my car and I definitely have two. It seems odd to me that theirs only has one since they are in Walnut, CA. IN any event, it sounds like it will work OK with only the one but I am going to take pass for now I think since most people have it say that it helps in 40+ mph range and I really want something that gives me more off the line acceleration. |

Thanks! That is a big help. For what it is worth the motor was GT-S - which he was telling me I had to have for it to work since mine is a GT-S. This was part of the reason why it didn't sound right to me since my cars engine is no different than a GT...it is all suspension stuff... |

I would check the battery, too. A jump is an easy place to start. Reason why I mention this is the new alternator. If the battery was run for a while with the old alternator, it may have caused it burn out. I have had this happen before. BTW - if a quart of oil put it on the dipstick, you are probably two quarts low, which should do any damage in the short term (really, though have your mom check her oil). I ran into a similar problem.. I changed distributor, Wires, PTS, ECU and still having problems.. My car would start and then die.. So please let me know if you have fix yours and how.. Thanks.. Well, mine was the battery and when I replaced it I was fine. If it is turning over and then dying it could be a handful of things from a vacuum leak, the idle to a problem with the fuel delivery. Have you tried starting it and then holding down the gas to force it to maintain a high idle? If so, what did that do? |

I was at a Toyota Salvage yard puchasing new rear control arms for my 1996 Celica GT-S Vert. and the guy there was trying to sell me on a low mileage engine from a 7th gen. (I think it was a 2002) that he had on hand. Now, I don't need a new engine but I am thinking he might have let me have it for cheap enough to make it worth my while, since it has 190 HP as opposed to the 135 mine does... He swore up and down that it would go on my car with fairly little modification. Doesn't sound right to me...anyone here done this swap or know how possible it is? |

I swerved to miss a kitten on the freeway this weekend and smashed into a curb and bent 3 of my 4 rear control arms. I got replacements and have installed them but don't know the torque spec and want to get it right...I have a 1996 GT-S convertible. Also, did drive the car to test it since installing the control arms and - while the problem was clearly solved - the steering wheel now has to be turned somewhat (quite a bit actually) to the left to make the car go straight. If you take your hands off the wheel it pulls right. I did a visual inspection and found nothing that appeared bent or broken. I am thinking I need to have it aligned but am wondering if there is anything else that I might check out first. I am wondering if the alignment can be this far off? I would say for the car to go straight you have to turn the wheel to about 10:00... I am glad to be OK. The suckiest part is that I am now likely to miss the SoCal meetup this Sunday since I won't be able to get it aligned until next week :-( |

Just wondering if anyone has seen a catback system for the 5sfe? Also, has anyone installed one? If so, how is it? I am toying with doing this instead of headers, since I am in California and don't feel like having to mod the header for my 2nd 02 sensor... Also, if anyone has an idea of how effective a mod a catback would be, that would also be nice to know...it seems to me like a catback with a new muffler might be effective in helping the system to breath out quicker, but not sure how much of a problem that is with the stock stuff... |

If you live in California like me, you will have two O2 sensors. I e-mailed the folks at this e-bay header and they said they have only one O2 sensor on it, which is sort of weird considering they are in Walnut, California. At this point I think I am opting out of this mod, but I may change my mind. I just don't like the idea of that 2nd O2 sensor hanging out... |
