I put in a new slave prior to putting the clutch in. I put another slave in prior to pulling the transmission the second time. I also rebuilt the clutch master cylinder. Any other ideas? |

The fork seemed fine with no unusual wear. I am not sure what to look for when checking the shifter cables. It will shift into all gears very easily when not running, so I assume the cables are fine.Do the shift cables have an adjustment? |

Been having month s of issues with my 96 celica GT 2.2 Last year I turned 170k miles. The transmission started to get stuck in gear; and sometimes it would not come out of gear. A friend of mine had a low mileage 60k transmission that he gave me, so i pulled the trans and noticed that the rubber springs on the clutch disk dry rotted out. I decided to install the other trans and also put in a new clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing. It seemed to shift fine for a few months until it started to give me trouble shifting gears again. It would not come out of gear and sometimes requires me to stop and shutdown the engine, then shift into gear and start it back up. It would then shift okay for a few miles and eventually would give me trouble going into reverse. I pulled the transmission and noticed that the shift fork was not pushing evenly on both sides of the throwout bearing. The fork end at the slave cylinder would sometimes be misaligned with the shaft sticking out of the slave cylinder. I would have to pull up or push down on the fork end to realign it. It would work for a while and then misalign and cause trouble. I pulled the transmission and replaced the throwout bearing because it appeared like the center tube in the bearing was crooked. I bought a new one, but it looked crooked just like the old one. I put a new one in anyway. After getting it all together it seemed to work fine for a few miles but then started to get stuck and whine while partially pressing down the clutch pedal. The shifter does not seem to go into gear positively....it seems soft...not firm. Not sure what it could be. Not sure why it is doing it again. |

Had someone hold the clutch pedal in while I watched the slave cylinder. There was no dropping. The slave movement was about an inch of travel. I drained the transmission gear oil and filled it with the synchromesh gear oil. Took it for a rive and it seemed okay. Later that day I decided to take it for another ride. Started it up and tried to put it in gear and it just would no go into any gear. Shut it down, and it easily went into gear. Started it up and it did not do into gear. Shut it down again and tried it and it went in all gears. Started it one last time and it went into all the gears. Drove it around for an hour and a half and it seemd fine. I just can not figure out why it would not go into gear. I have 150,000 on it. |

Thanks for the reply. Is it correct to say that if the master or slave cylinder were bad, the cause would be a leak? I am not sure how else one of these could fail. |

I can not figure out what is going wrong here. My car was running fine until I had put it up for a few months to replace the oil pump, timing belt, water pump. When I put it back on the road it seemed like the throw out bearing was a bit dry because it was somewhat noisier than I remembered. After driving the car on and off a few days, everything was back to normal sounding. After a few weeks of driving, and on my way home one night I got to a stop light. I pressed the clutch pedal down and tried to put the car in neutral but it would not come out of gear. A hard pull on the shifter would not even do it. I quickly shut the car down and it came right out of gear. I started the car back up and was able to put it into gear and start driving. Shifting up into second and third gear was not easy, it did not want to go into gear, I got it to go in but it seemed like I was forcing it. I ran it back and forth in the driveway and got some really mixed results. Sometimes it would go right in, other times it would not. Sometimes it would not come out gear. Other times it seemed like the clutch would be at the bottom of the pedal. So I let the car sit for a few weeks and now I am stumpted as to what to do. I do not see any leaks around the master cylinder or the slave. Mike |
