QUOTE (Andason @ Dec 21, 2003 - 9:06 PM)
For the ratio say a 90's mustang 5.0 = 215 hp
ST-185 3sgte (2.0 liter) 66% less displ. = 215 hp

Not a fair comparison considering it's turbo vs n/a... If you boost a 5.0 V8 the same psi as the 3sgte... it'll make a lot more power because of the very large displacement (actually a 4.6 liter motor)... As far as n/a motors go, Japanese motors typically make a lot more hp per liter... but typically, they also lack displacment and they come from the factory very well tuned. The big american V8's... being very large in displacement, have much less hp per liter, because they don't come from the factory as highly tuned as most Japanese 4 bangers... so there are a bunch of cans of whoop-ass to open up.

Well... I wouldn't let these go for 8 bucks... I mean... that's basically 2/3 shipping. Check on eBay... you can get them fairly cheap there... around 25 bucks or so...

Basically... the 7th gen seats are really tall in the back, and are about 1 inch more narrow on the sliders. You either have to make custom brackets, like I did, or drill new holes, like John did. I cut off and ground down the old brackets on the stock sliders, and measured out and moved them to fit on the stock 6th gen holes. It was fairly challenging, but it turned out OK... Just make sure you have your seats straight.

I might have 16-20 lying around.... and a few of them may be pretty banged up. They're closed-top conical versions and I have 2 keys... one in good shape and the other cracked. These lugs have been through and accident...;] PM or e-mail me a price you think is fair...

Anyone done this and can comment on how possible it would be for two clutzes with a pretty good outlay of Craftsmans and an engine hoist?

Refer to my post... It'll slightly different for the 5sfe, but not too different...

QUOTE (FallenHero @ Dec 15, 2003 - 11:40 PM)
Your're making me want a honda, lol.

I had no clue they could handle boost. I doubt 15psi, but I could see ten.

Honda motors are pretty tough... just consider, Vtec with all of those little moving pins and stuff, all in squished together in the head, and is designed for operating at 6K+ rpms... and is able to do so for a long long time, and is covered under warantee... Obviously the manufactures have faith in their product... and that's just Vtec.

As far as eating boost... it's all about tuning. 15psi is doable with stock compression (10:6:1) depending on your patience with tuning. Higher compression, as mentioned, is less stable for boost, however, that can be fixed with proper fuel managment, higher octane fuel, and a lot of very meticulous tuning... It's a lot of wear on the motor, and will probably reduce the life of the engine a lot, but turbo charging an n/a motor in general will always do that... even if it's just a little bit.

Know what you want and what to do before you do it...

Nitrious is definately the biggest bang for the buck. If you tune your shiat correctly, you won't blow up your engine. Refer to my first sentence again. I've squeezed as high as a 75 shot (zex dry kit w/ 75 shot jets) on a stock block 7afe managing tracked times between low 15's and high 14's... The thing with nitrious is, it's basically for straight line racing only. It's fairly cost effective if you like your excitement in small doses... I don't...

Aside from that, unless you're willin to pay a few grand for a turbo kit, or maybe even a swap, then the most you should be expecting is a few ponies per mod, and each mod can be anywhere from 30 bucks a pop (intake) to a few hundred bucks a pop (SAFC, Header, etc...)...

I've owned 4 cars and 1 truck/suv...

My first car was a 87 RX-7 GXL... the good ole 13b. Nice drift car... but started crappin all over itself and started losing compression, due to bad seals in the rotors and a bad ECU. Left for dead, but recently sold to my brother-in-law and is currently under re-building.

Second was an 86 toyota 4 runner. Fully built 22RE, then 22RTE. The 22RE had TRD street legal performance cams, Intake, header, exhaust, amoungst other little stuff. That motor was swapped out for a 22RTE, which blew a head gasket and froze up on me. The runner was fully built for off-roading. Internal and ext roll cages, front solid axle conversion, 8 inch suspension lift in the front, 10 in the rear, 2 inch body lift, custom front and rear low-profile bumpers, 38 in mud terrains, and boggers, and all terrain street tires, front and rear detroit lockers, and some other stuff... sold for a more practical car.

Third car, a 95 race-prepped celica ST. Nearly fully built 7afe... built as a wannabe project for autoX... but blew the motor and crashed the car.

Fourth car, another 95 Celica ST... current car and daily driver. Refer to profile for mods.

Fifth car, 96 Civic hatchback... currently pre-planning for B18 motor swap and possible LS-VTEC conversion. Currently an ugly green beater with 17in Koing rims and ALTEZZA's!!! (they came with the car)...

My original WANTS:
MKIV Supra TT 6Spd
ST185 Blk on Red on Gry with >70K miles
SW20 Blk on Blk or Red on Blk with >70k miles
3rd Gen Teg GSR or Type-R Blk or Red on Blk for the GSR and could care less for the Type-R
AE86 hatchback (still looking)
S13 or S14 Blk on Blk (could care less about the motor... wanted to do Silvia SR20DET Conversion)
And there are others... I'm sure

hmm interesting discussion.
well i know definately US 6gens are weak as hell, it's like a sports car for girls.
but the 7gen is not as great as kawnza said.

Heh...never said it was great... just said its much better than 6th gens... very biased 6th gen owners seem to not want to acknowledge that.
QUOTE
definately in the US, 7gens are better than 6 gens
but esle where, i dont think so. note that higher models of 6 gens also have vvti
They're better elsewhere also. "Elsewhere" the 7th gen GTS, called SS2 in Japan and Celica t-sport in the UK, are rated around 190 bhp... and the Beams 3sge (the vvti motor) is more fiction than fact. Many toyota enthusiasts doubt, along with myself, that the Beams 3sge can put out 190-200 bhp, as it's rated. They're actually closer to the mid 180s mark. Even still... vvti isn't what you think...and just because you mention it, I'll assume you don't know exactly what it does...
QUOTE
and the GT4 is much better than the 7gen gts
agreed... but it's far from the perfect car everyone here seems to play it as... I know why I like it...do you? What makes you think it's far better than a 7th gen GTS?
QUOTE
GT4 is made for ralley and when the turbo kicks in, it's far greater than the vvti so on track def. the GT4 can outrun a GTS
I guess you didn't read anything I wrote. To make it short and sweet... turbo is better than VVTi or VVTLi on the track...sure but depends in what car. I never said the GT-4 wasn't as good because it wasn't powerful. I said, it's not gonna win against a 7th gen GTS stock for stock in a track race, because it's nearly as well designed for such a thing. Kinda like, a tractor is never gonna beat a Saleen S7 in a drag race, cause it wasn't designed for such a task, however, you can drag race tractors... although the celicas are a closer match, and are not to that extreme. And if they were so good in rally, why'd they get pulled out by toyota and replaced by Corolla hatchbacks within a few years? Again, I'm not saying they weren't good (a 6th gen holds the pike's peak record as i recall), but I am saying, don't Immortalize somthing too much... when everything has obvious flaws.

i really like that front bumper. but i cant get over my instincts. i think its fake.

It's not chopped... why would that little section make the "bumper" fake? Being a graphic designer, It highly doubt anyone can chop lifelike chrome lenses, perfectly match neutral white shades, and kit fit problems. If I was gonna chop it, I'd surely fix the slight buldge on the fender, where the kit doesn't perfectly fit...right?

QUOTE (Simmo @ Dec 14, 2003 - 4:31 PM)
Through experience...
0 to 60, the 6th gen (uk spec) is fatser than the gen 7 (uk spec)
60 to 100, the gen 7 makes up the ground what with the lift and all.
Both cars max out at about 145mph (Gen 6 was in front biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif )

UK spec wouldn't count in this case...however, the 7th gen GTS will pull on the 3sge powered SS2 (UK GT) in the longer run. I'll say, maybe the UK Spec GT will win 0-60... but not 0-100. Don't underestimate that car. It's lighter, and more powerful than an SS2... only thing it lacks is torque, but because its revvy nature and the way it makes power and delivers its power, I'll argue, it can take an SS2 (around 170-180 bhp) in the longer distance, while losing out on the launch due to its lack of low-end torque... then again, the 3sge isn't a torquey beast like the 5sfe anyways...
QUOTE (97sccelica)

from what i have read
the auto gts is a far cry from an example of how fast a 7thgen gts is.

heh, exactly correct... about a 2 second difference... Put it this way, stock for stock, a 7th gen GTS is much quicker than a 2nd gen alltrac (5th gen model alltrac)...
QUOTE (FallenHero)
According to what I have read on other pages, the GT-4 (6th gen) spanks the ass of the 7th gen GTS. As the guy put it:

The GTS takes a good driver to know just when to accelerate through a corner. If it's not done properly, you loose traction.

HOWEVER, with the GT-4 you just lay on the accelerator and let the differentials distribute the power wherever it is needed or not. Takes much of the effort out of racing, but who cares? Plus, you have hella more power through the straighs of the course, and we know who is going to own there.

If you've ever driven track, you'll understand what I mean why the 3rd gen gt-4 (6th gen model) is too fat and sluggish to be competitive stock for stock against a 7th gen GTS on the track. Even in Rally, it was replaced by a smaller, lighter, better designed vehicle... in the corolla hatchback. It's rated at around 1600 kg weight (gt-4 around 3400-3500 pounds) compared to 2400-2500 pounds of the 7th gen GTS... so the power and torque isn't that huge of a difference in terms of accelerating through corners, but the deal is with the suspension and chassi designs. Basically, the 6th gen chassi and suspension design is old... and obsolete when compared to newer cars. The 7th gen, for one, has one of the best chassi designs ever, for a fwd compat sports car. When you compare the difficulties between driving the gt4 and the GTS... of course they're different, and one is obviously gonna be more difficult than the other, however, it's not a fair argument to say just because the gt4 is easier to drive means it'll win. Drivers know their cars when they race them... and again, I will mention, power isn't everything. The Revolver Hachi, rated around 180 ps, won the D1 drifting comp this year, with about 1/2 the HP of its competitors. Obviously, that hachi can't be making more than 120-130 ftlbs of torque, and it's not making hundreds of ponies, so why did it win? Same reason why it's the cult legend drift car.

Here's the jist of it...

Unbolt/disconnect all wires that connect to the tranny... there are a few... remove both front wheels, pull out hub pins, remove axles from hubs, be careful not to "break" axle... remove axle from tranny. Have something to hold up the tranny and engine, say jacks or engine lift... remove lower engine mount, and tranny mount on the driver's side. It's difficult to remove the bottom mount... cause you'll have to remove bottom crossmember. Remove bolts connecting tranny to engine. Carefully get the tranny out. Replace clutch, buff flywheel, replace throw out bearing, etc... now go backwards and put everything back together...

NOTE: It's not an easy job... expect taking an entire day to do the job correctly. My cousin and I managed to replace my clutch in about 6-7 hours, and he's certified and I am a very capable mechanic.

^Just wondering man, why is there no market for 2-door AWD turbos??? i am so sick of seeing mommy sedans flying around with their big ass ends up in the air looking like box mad.gif

How many do you see around? The only that were ever sold here were the awd DSM's and the Celica Alltracs. How common are they? If there aren't many around, say as many as the "mommy sedans" then one would figure they didn't sell well and so the companies stopped marketing them here... supply and demand... pretty straight forward stuff. Of course enthusiasts such as ourselves would love to see a rebirth of those types of vehicles, however, we are a VERY small percentage of the buying community, and most people who can afford to drop 25-30k on a vehicle would much perfer a larger vehicle, or an SUV...

Hello all..

I need help finding jet black rims with the silver outline. I hope ppl know what im talking about. I find these kind of rims sexy. I only found one set of rims, and HRE rims are to expensive.

Try looking for a set of ADR Vision rims... they're jet black with a polished lip... very sexy rims indeed. However, if you need a set of fairly cheap black rims, I have a fairly cheap set for sale. Refer to my profile for pictures. It's the flat black ones, 6 spoke...not the bronze /w polished lip. They need a good paint job, but aside from that, they're in fairly good condition. I'll let em' go pretty cheap too...

Agreed... the rear suspension is completely different, so there's a very good chance the bolt patterns on the strut top may be different...

I have not had time to research this yet and you could save me some time if you know the answer to this question!!!
thanks ,

Turbos are different, Intercoolers are different, I believe many of the electronics and sensors are different...

where did you find this info? about the a-seriese?

It's not built off of the "A" series block. It's a new block series... properly entitled "AZ"....

There will be fitment problems. The 1MZFE is too tall... say a few inches too tall for the celica's engine bay, assuming you properly mount it.
