Just went to Flordia, from SC. 8 Hour drive. 443 mile trip. 12 gallon tank, perspectively 36 miles a gallon. Got to the hotel on fumes, but made it. 159k on engine, no major changes to engine. Big speaker enclosure in the hatch. Manual Trannie. Went between 65-75mph whole way. I know this is for real, being I charge my employer mileage, and get my gas receipts paid back. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the tank is 16 gallon. So you were getting 27-30 mpg which is typically what I get. |

If the car is cold, and level, the dipstick will read properly. Your bitching about your car NOT burning oil anymore?I envy you good sir, my engine eats oil like gas... My car's been burning a quart of Mobil 1 every 3K miles forever. I read that if your car doesn't burn oil, it's an indication that waste material is building up in the oil which is bad for the engine. In other words, oil still gets burnt but the volume is taken up by waste by-product like moisture and acid so the oil level seems to stay the same. |

The bounce test was designed for shocks not struts. It never works because the spring is under too much pressure. My struts were bad and I noticed by driving on the freeway and if your car bounces or vibrates over bumps(405 freeway a good test) or you bottom out then replace. After I replaced no more bouncing. I am not sure what you mean by bottom out.. 3 of my 4 rims are bent at the lip, is it an indication? I don't really trust Mavis because I heard they like to upsell you stuff. |

Some guy at Mavis said to me my Celica's struts needed to be replaced. He said that though my car had relatively low mileage (75K) it was 11 years old and is due for the struts to be replaced. I kept doing that lean on fender, bounce the car up and down, and see if it stops after one bounce test, and I just couldn't see how the struts needed replacement. My car doesn't lean during corner, doesn't nose dive when stops, doesn't float like a boat when going over bumps. So how long did your struts last?? |

37mpg highway.. gosh that is such total and utter bullcrap. I got a 98 manual and the best I ever got was about 30mpg highway driving down in Florida and I was driving highway for hours at a time. I usually get about 26-29 mpg 75% highway 25% city. 37mpg is total bullcrap. No way. |

My reason is exceedingly simple. When I was looking for a new car in 1998 I just wanted a stick shift convertible with a decent size trunk but not too big to fit into my drive way. I had wanted a 5th gen Celica and it seemed the BMW was too common place around NYC. So I just bought the first white Celica convertible I found. Pretty much paid retail too. Darn I'm glad I didn't get that BMW. That's been 2 or 3 iterations of the BMW 3 series since and my Celica convertible happened to be one of the last ones ever produced. |

I need to replace the inside front window weather strip, the one that runs along the top of the door. Do I need to remove the interior door panel? Thanks. |

Hi. Does anyone know a place around NYC area that offers gold plating on car emblems? I've seen fom youtube videos that gold plating can be done with the emblem already on the car. I wonder if there's any place around NYC and Yonkers that offers such a service. Thanks. |

No you don't have to remove the ball that hooks to the actual hatch. The trunk lift has like a thin metal wrapped around the ball, get a flat head and insert it in between that metal and the plastic. Once you've done that it should pull out of the ball, just don't completely remove that metal because it sucks putting it back on lol. Good luck and pm me if u need more help. Hi. Thanks for the response. But I can't seem to find the thin metal. Here is a close-up picture of the lift socket: I got a couple after market lifts from eBay - so I guess the size of the ball joints is universal and I can be sure that my new after market lifts would fit right on the old balls then? Thanks. |

Hi. I need to install new after market trunk lifts and thus need to remove the old ones. Do I need to unscrew and discard the old ball joints or can I somehow remove the old lifts and fit the new lifts over the old ball joints? Thanks. |

I've been keeping my quarters in the ashtray and it's a really bad idea because the coins would fall underneath the parking brake lever if I'm not careful. I just discovered the coin holder the other day, after having owned this car for 12 years. I was rather upset. |

yeah how do u get the crank off? According to the Toyota service manual you use a shop rag to pull off the snap ring and the regulator handle and plate can then be removed. Would somebody tell me if I need to remove the tweeter speaker cover (for those of use who have the 8 speaker system) before I can remove the door panel? Also, are the speakers attached to the door panel? Thanks. |

I am a new member here, so i wanted to make an introduction thread and tell you a little about myself and my newest Celica. I am 32 years old and live in Rapid City, South Dakota. I just hitchhiked 400miles and picked up a 1999 GT convertible. I bought a 99 GT brand new in 98 on the same day I bought the engagement ring for my ex wife. I shoulda get the car and got rid of the woman, but it's all good because I finally got another one and this one has alot more headroom. The car is in amazing condition for a 10yr old car in South Dakota, especially considering it has 224K+ miles. cool. I got a 98 convertible brand new but I totaled it and I took the bus for 200 miles to buy an used 98 convertible two months later. QUOTE I drove it home last night and made it 390 miles before the gas light even came on. The car drove and rode great. It is not as fast as my Solstice GXP was, but that's not what I bought this car for either. I did have one hiccup when I got off the highway, it stalled when I stopped at the end of the exit ramp. It fired right up and didn't have any problems at all today. Maybe somebody could give me some hints to what that might be. mine is a stick shift and I get about 32mpg mostly highway. once in a blue moon my car would stall if I fire it up right after I turn off the engine. seems the computer feeds too little to the engine in idle. but once the car gets moving it never stalls. QUOTE The car will be more of a daily driver, road trip vehicle, and may have some spirited driving through the hills. So i am not planning on any engine upgrades at the moment. I like reliable vehicles. I will however be tinting the windows, suspension upgrade, and get some 17's underneath it. the car is reliable. but check the oil level regularly since it seems to burn a quart of oil every 2-3K miles. QUOTE I need upgrade the speakers even though i love the way it sounds. At low volumes you can hear some crackling from deteriorating surounds. I don't remember my old one having this much bass either. the car has the upgraded 8 speaker system. upper bass is overly emphasized. I think that is compensation for open air driving. QUOTE The windshield has one small rock chip. The interior is perfect except for the drivers door panel fabric came loose at some time and somebody did a ****ty job glueing it back on. The Top is in Perfect condition with ZERO rips, tears, holes, burns, or even fading and the motor works great. The drivers sunvisor has a punture from the top lock mechanism, and the driverside window makes a rubbing noise with it gets almost all the way up. The paint still has a nice shine, it has a few small rock chips on the hood. The front passenger fender has a tiny rub mark that should buff out, and the passenger rear quarter has 3 small door dings that are only visible in certain light and at certain angles. The trunk release works, but it doesnt actually open unless you lift it up while popping the trunk. Last but I am sure not least, the power antenna goes up but not all the way back down. I think all in all these are very minor problems and most of them are easy and cheaply fixed. the fabric on the front door tend to come loose as the glue underneath dries up. sometimes I just feel like ripping the fabrics off. rear panel door dings I got too. trunk lid does stop popping after awhile, maybe the cylinders dried up. QUOTE HID hi and low beams, possibly even fogs Lowering kit 17" wheels and tires I got some ultra light 16" enkei and less than a year later I already bent one driving over a pot hole. I drove the stock wheels for 8 years and even though they look crappy they are still straight - and they weight less than the enkei. QUOTE Leather seats(I would like to get Katzkin to make me some suede ones) Stubby antenna looking for leather seats also but dont know any good installer. |

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF this seems really really complicated. I got a loose back rear window that does not go up straight when the car is in motion. I took it to toyota and they said it takes five hours just to take everything apart and put them back together so they suggested that I replace the entire window/regulator assembly. I was thinking that there was just a screw that fell off. the gave me a quote $2100 for $600 parts and $1500 labor. really knowing how much work it takes you think it is reasonable??? |

Hi. Are the covers available in leather/vinyl combo, meaning the seating surface is leather but the side and back vinyl? Thanks! |

Hi. I am seriously thinking of replacing my clothes seats with leather. The reason is that I am really getting tired of getting zapped by static electricity during winter. My first 6gc had leather, and I don't remember ever getting zapped after getting out of the car. I totaled that car, bought a used 6gc with clothes (it was 2001 and the car was of course already out of production). It was OK at first, I think, but as years go by every winter the static electricity problem got worse and worse, maybe due to the fabric wearing down. Or maybe it's the rubber compound on my new set of tires. I don't know. Or maybe it's my wool overcoat that I wear all the time when the weather is cold. What I do know is that I would like to have leather before this coming winter so I can stopped getting zapped. I am looking at Katzkin and some sellers on eBay. I remember there used to be another big seller on the net but I don't remember the name. I think it was Classic Leather or something. But I couldn't find it so they might've gone out of business. I also need a good installer in New York City. I need leather seating surface so it doesn't have to be leather all the way around. Actually vinyl is good because I don't want to have to worry about carrying stuff and leave creases on the leather. But I need to sit on leather so I don't build up static electricity when I drive. My budget is $1000 to $1500. My 6gc is a 98 convertible. I would appreciate any recommendation or suggestion. Thank you in advance! |

Edit: And no, the water will NOT evaporate out of the headlight in just a few days. Not unless you leave the bulb on 24/7 to boil it off I am speaking from experience. Lots of experience. And my headlights have no brown stain or anything. The thing about water is that it is very good at evaporating - that is why bottles have caps. |
