You Americans have it so bloody good with car and auto prices, here in Australia my 6GC has cost me well over $25000 and its almost completely stock.

interior fuse panel, should say wiper right on it.
if that's fine, then check the plug going to the pump

Where is this? By the looks of things its between the wheel guard and the chassis, I just wanna see if anyone knows before I remove the wheel and guard for no reason.

CelicaHD2... wow! Thanks so much for the awesome write-up, I couldn't have hoped for a better explanation.
I'll get started as soon as I can and I'll let you know how it all goes :-)

G'day 6gc'ers I need painting advice!

My 6gc has an extremely deep 30cm (12") gouge in the rear fender <insert embarrassing story with flimsy excuses here>. Now I'd like to try my hand at repairing it myself, however I've never done anything like this before so Im after some advice before I ruin it even more.

The area around the scratch has been repainted twice before, once by the previous owner and once professionally after a nasty vandalism incident which can be seen here. As a result the paint around the scratch is extremely thick, about 2mm from the surface of the surrounding paint to the steel underneath and another 1mm into the steel.

After doing some reading on the subject I've come up with the following plan.
1. Wet sand the area with 100-grit down to bare metal.
2. Fill the gouged steel with bondo.
3. Sand progressively finer 200 - 400 - 800 grit.
4. Apply primer.
5. Apply paint + wet sand with 1000 grit.
6. Repeat step 5 untill new paint is level with surrounding paint.
7. Apply clear coat, wet sand with 2000 grit, buff and polish.
8. Enjoy the satisfaction of having robbed a body-shop of their exorbitant fee.

I know colour matched paint can be purchased in spray cans from auto-shops, will these be suitable for this application, or will a full spray-gun set up be required?
Does this little plan sound right to those with painting experience? Feel free to laugh at my noob-ness and point me in right direction if I'm way off the mark.

Many thanks,
Palmy.

Thanks for the warm welcome and the offers of glass, I've already replaced all the glass now.

So far I've replaced the entire liftback door as it was too badly damaged to repair, every window, the lights, mirrors, and had the fenders and roof beaten.

Don't Australian drivers have to take out a compulsory 3rd party insurance policy?

PS. Gutted for your car. Hey do all Aussie spec '98 Celicas have those red sets like JDM SS-II and SS-III?

Yes we do have compulsory 3rd party, but like you said that doesnt cover my damage.
The reason I dont believe in insurance is, if I had comprehensively insured this car since the day I baught it, I would have paid roughly $14000 so far, thats more than the value of the car.
The repairs all up cost me $7000 roughly, so even without insurance I've saved money, the inconvience was having to come up with $7k of disposable income.

Im not sure if they all do have the red seats but they're definately common, possibly a factory option?

And yes, I will make this a progress thread, though I doubt it will move all that fast. Im poorer than an Amish mechanic.

Hey 6gc.net, my name is Matt, Im 25 and Im from Sydney Australia.
I've had my '98 SX-R for about 5 years now and its been through hell and back with me, I'll tell you the story...

About 6 months ago, I had a perfectly stock, well maintained and apart from being in dire need of a wash, great Celica.

This was my 6gc on the last day of my holiday in the Australian Alps.

This was it 24 hours later.

Here's the story, I drove 10 hours back home from the snow to find my driveway packed with cars belonging to my 18 year old brothers friends so I was forced to park on the street as he was having a party. Being completely buggered from the drive, I promptly went to bed. A couple of hours later Im woken by screams and loud bangings sounds, turns out some gate-crashers my brother ejected decided they would retaliate to this by rejection by bringing 20 men armed with baseball bats and machetes and going to town on the cars outside my house.
My screams of rage measured 4 on the Richter.

So my beloved 6gc languished under a tarp for 6 months before I had the cash to repair it (I dont believe in car insurance).

I'd always refrained from modifying the car to retain decent re-sell value, though now I've spent several thousand dollars on it I've changed my mind and replaced my broken lights with JDM projectors.
And so it has begun, now that I've changed one thing this car will be a work in progress from now on.

Planned mods:
Wheels, tyres and suspension.
Exhaust and intake.
Sound system.
Bodykit.
Paint.

I hope you guys can help point me in the right direction for this stuff and I look forward to building a 6gc worthy of joining the ranks of some of the fantastic rides I've seen here.
