A puff of blue smoke on start-ups is actually pretty common, especially if you have the 5SFE engine. As long as it goes away pretty quickly and your engine doesn't smoke all the time, it's just your valve guides are worn.

What happens is after you shut off your engine, a small amount of oil gets pass your worn valve guides and into your cylinders. When you start your engine the next time, the oil is being burn off and thus you get a puff of blue smoke on start-ups.
It's not a performance issue nor an indication that your engine will die soon.

You could possibly replace the guides without removing the head, but it takes a skilled mechanic to do it. Otherwise, live with the smoke, or perhaps try one of those oils designed for high mileage cars; most *claim* to recondition worn seals and valve guides but I dunno........

A good, quality impact gun makes a huge difference on what it can handle. I'd try another shop with better tools before giving up.

Or use a long cheater pipe over either a breaker bar or lug wrench and just jump on top of the pipe's end.....even if you're a lightweight say like 100 lbs, standing at the end of a 4 ft long pipe will give you 400 ft-lbs of torque. biggrin.gif

What about tapping directly into the driver side door pin switch?

The other place you can tap into is the junction box underneath the steering column. You should see a big integrated relay box--will need to remove the plastic trim panel around the fuse box cover. Pull the relay off and there will be a 12 (3-6-3) pins connector on the junction box. Pin # 6 should work also and it's a negative trigger..

At least it pretty easy to drain & refill the oil. Won't even need to jack up the car.

Yeah, sure thing; glad to help......hrmmm I guess knowledge comes with old age.....oh crap I'm gettin old.......

Now are you planning on reusing that 5W-30 oil that you drained out? I wouldn't if I were you, because the oil can pick up a lot of contaminates in the process of draining (oil dripping out of the drain hole can pick up dirt and other junk that's on the oil pan's outside surface, and the oil drain pan you use can by dirty (mine is never really clean and I use it for doing the brakes and coolant changes also). If it's dino oil, get rid of it since it's cheap; like 1 bux a bottle when it's on sale.

Yeah, 5W-30 would be OK to use. The 1st # is the oil viscosity in cold temperature, and the 2nd # is the oil viscosity during normal operating temperature. So both a 5W-30 and a 10W-30 oil will have the same oil viscosity once the oil is up to normal temperature.

In general tho, you would wanna use a multi-weight oil with the narrowest range of viscosity (10W30 has a 20 weight difference, 5W-30 has a 25 weight difference). The wider the viscosity range an oil has, the more polymers are added, and that makes an oil more prone to viscosity & thermal breakdown.

Well, that depends on exactly what's included and how many miles is on the engine. Does it includes a matching wiring harness, AFM or MAP, intake, exhaust, intercooler, axles, etc?

Hmmm, if it makes you feel any better, lots of people break it when taking that off. Most used part shops sold them out as soon as they have them in.

QUOTE (Charlie97L @ Jun 27, 2003 - 6:47 AM)
actually, i don't think the GT brakes in the front are bigger.  where did you get that info.

The front GT brake diameter is 275mm vs 255mm for the ST. Pad area is also a bit bigger for the GT.

Got these specs from the New Car Feature for the 94 Celica. Every time Toyota replaces a car model or makes major changes to a car model, it publishes these guides for the press.

The proportioning valve controls the rear brake pressure. Yes, the GT uses a higher rear brake pressure than the ST, but I dunno if the GT P-valve will work well on the ST unless you change the front brakes to the GT too. GT front brakes are actually bigger than the ST. My guess is most people would just leave the ST P-valve in......

Normal idle speed (with the car in netural and all accessories turned off) for the 5SFE engine is 750 RPM, + or - 50 RPM.

Does your idle go up with the AC on? The idle should go up when you have the AC on to compensate for the extra load on the engine. If the idle doesn't go up, then there's something wrong.

so ya can just unplug the airbag without it goin off?

You'll need to disconnect the battery first, wait a few minutes, before doing the steps above.

Normally, I don't really need a steering wheel puller. After you've loosen the nut holding the steering wheel to the column, use your hands and whack the steering wheel from behind a few times and it should come loose.

But......I would not recommend even attempting to hook up the 7gen airbag to the 6gen.

Well, your pics need to be on a web host somewhere on the Internet. Then click on the IMG button when you're composing your thread and put the address there.

Here's a pic of what they look like on my Celica

user posted image

I'll have some close up pics of each wheel by the end of the weekend.

What do you have for trade?

It's on the sticker by the driver side door jam. Below the bar code you should see
C/TR: XXX/YYYY

XXX would be the Color code
YYYY would be the TRim code (interior)

The touch up paint you got should have the code on the bottle; I'd think Toyota had different mixes of black paints during that many years.

I have a set of 2001 15" 7th Gen Celica GT OEM rims with tires for sale. 2 tires have 60% treads left and the other 2 have 40% left. All 4 tires are Dunlop SP 4000. Wheels are in good shape with maybe a couple light nicks (not curb rashes) and one of the Toyota emblem is missing off of the center cap. Asking only $250 plus shipping. Pics available on request.

The wiring harness that connects the amp to the head unit? Yes, I'll need it. I thought it's hardwired to the amp.

Yup, that the piece I need, but it must be from a Celica with power windows/locks.

I'm interested in the factory amp only--don't need the HU. Is $15 plus shipping reasonable? Let me know.

Blackdolla and Supersprynt:

Could I buy just the map pocket out of the driver side door panel from either one of you? I just need that bottom plastic piece with the map pocket (must be for power windows/locks tho) and that should separate pretty easily from the door panel.
