On a future energy front we will be shifting to wind, solar, nuclear, hydro, tidal, and biomass. Coal will lead us to a horrible future, NG is a short term solution.

Transportation fuel is a more difficult source of energy to provide renewably. Biomass sources are more compatible in producing transportation fuel. Taking food and making fuel is dumb, however it can be a stepping stone to reach a state where biomass waste is used to create transportation fuel. So much biomass waste is directed to landfill or left to rot and emit carbon into the atmosphere without providing us with a source of energy. Two proven sources of biomass based fuels are ethanol and biodiesel.

We need to adopt the mindset of scavengers and produce energy from any waste source possible. Every waste treatment plant should be producing methane, it is a byproduct of the processes occurring within their facilities and there is no reason not to capture it.

I am continually astounded by the power of lobby groups in the US. There is already too many facilities converting food into fuel in the US. Funding should be directed to developing the next methods of converting waste into fuel.

OK 3 things:

Corn is not a good source of ethanol. That is not to say ethanol is bad. In Canada, Iogen has been working on cellulose based ethanol for more than a decade, have had a pilot plant running for years and has been refining the technology for commercialization. Cellulose based ethanol uses biomass waste to produce fuel - hay, grass, corn cobs, oat husks among other things. It is a viable technology and can be used at existing corn-based production facilities with some upgrades and uses non-food sources to produce fuel.

http://www.iogen.ca/

2nd:

Anyone who does a 'one tank comparison' on fuel efficiency can not be trusted, I have been through government monitored fuel economy testing and this type of comparison is biased and useless.

The energy density of E85 on a volume basis is 71% of that of gasoline. While a 29% drop in fuel economy would be typical, ethanol burns more efficiently and has a much higher octane rating than gasoline. E85 has an octane rating of about 105 and when calculating the mileage penalty you need to factor this in. For people who drive high performance cars, the cost of more fuel is offset by the lower cost when compared to buying 94 octane fuel, and you can turn up the boost further if you are driving a turbo car that can handle the power. I was involved in an engineering competition in which we converted a 97 chev malibu to run on E85 and we saw less than a drop of 29% in fuel economy with an increase in power. On turbocharged cars, the penalty is even less.

3rd:

And most important. Cellulose ethanol has a much smaller carbon footprint than that of traditional gasoline and much less than that from fuel obtained the Oil sands in Alberta - where much of North America's fuel will be coming from in the next decades.

If you are interested in understanding how carbon emissions impact us, an excellent book is 'The Weather Makers' by Tim Fannery. I saw him speak at a luncheon and was very impresed.

SOLD!

$1500 obo as is

Car is currently my daily driver, but I have been putting off some work that needs to be done. I have owned it since 138,000 kms. This would be a perfect project car for someone wanted to do a swap and custom paint/body.

94 GT white
285,000 km
5 speed
black leather
AC (works great)
PW, PD, PM
15" aluminum rims

No ABS
No airbag
No sunroof

Car passed E-test in 2005 easily
New Toyota battery this summer
10-disc sony CD changer included - plays through stock head unit
rear calipers rebuilt by Toyota last summer

The car needs a new clutch.
The doors have rusted at the bottom - doors should be replaced else metal work required
The hatch has the same problem under the rear lip
New tires are needed

I was hoping to refinish the car myself, but I am moving and the car has to go by the 28th of September. frown.gif
Pictures will follow in a day or two.

Rocket Scientist...

more or less...

I am a mechanical engineer for the company that manufactured the Canadarm, Canadarm 2 (currently on the ISS). I lead the build of the robotic arms on DEXTRE, the robotic manipulator that is waiting to go up to the ISS but has not been launched due to shuttle delays. Designed to drastically reduce the need for repair and integration spacewalks on the station freeing time to perform experiments on the station that Bush has already eliminated.

Just broke 700 kms on a tank, 7.48 lt/100 km = 37.8 miles per gallon = 31.5 miles per US gallon.

about 80% highway, 20% city. 87 octane of course...

This is a great project for these kids. The car looks like it might be some sort of kit car with a tubular frame. Look to Brazil for more technology like this. The use ethanol and bio-diesel in most of their cars and have had this for some time.

Would have got this if I looked sooner.

For the canucks out there, these are importable to canada as of June 2006. There is a supercharged version with the 4A-GZE.

there is also the spriter trueno, almost the same car, available at the same time and it also has a version with the 4A-GZE

Again, I will add to what has been said, something is wrong with your car. Without seeing the car, best guess would be the O2 sensor as many have mentioned. others are sparkplugs, wires, distributor, coil, that anchor dragging behind your car.

I get up to 675 km (420 miles) highway, 550 km (342 miles) Toronto traffic per tank and I have over 265,000 km on the car. The lowest I have remembered is 500 km (311 miles) and that was city traffic in the winter when the thermostat was gone and the car would not fully warm up.

and by the way, they did sell STs in Canada but they sold poorly and were only offered for the first couple years.

VD is not a big deal. I hate people that expect a huge deal out of it. I believe it is far more romantic to completly surprise someone on a day that has no meaning.

Nothing goes over better than flowers on a random day.

First off, Saab makes good cars, problem is they are FWD. Check out a 9-5 Aero, 2.3 lt turbo 250 hp with an overboost ecu control that exceeds that for short periods. Reliability is good, not toyota great, but good. Styling is another story, some people like it, most hate it.

back to the 9-2X:
The 9-2X is a facelifted subaru imprezza. Different front, rear and interior. It came with either the 2.5lt na or the 2.0 lt trubo out of the WRX. If you have read up on Subaru swaps, all of the drivetrains are compatable. You could swap in a WRX STi engine, trans, diffs and ecu. Now the swap would be expensive (all scooby swaps are).

non turbo cars run less than 20k used, the swap would be big coin, but you should be able to get it done within your budget. If you are interested check out:

My vote - Saab 9-2X with a USDM STI swap!!! wink.gif

speed6 is nice, it is a 4 cyl, 2.3 lt Direct injection turbo car with intercooler AWD and 6 speed, magazines refer to it as a WRX for adults.

Alright, 12 years boarding, only took a lesson after 5 years (oh yeah, big mistake).

1st tip, gettin off the lift. Sit on the end of the lift. If you are goofy, the right, normal - the left.
2ndt tip, take a 1 hour semi-private lesson.
3rd tip, wear vollyball kneepads under your ski pants (you look like less of a wuss/newbie with them under your ski pants).
4th tip, never go on a bunny hill, go in intermediate hills. You need to be on edges, if you are not on edge, you are on the flat and will catch an edge (this is not a maybe, you will catch an edge if you ride your board flat).
5th tip, don't panic. Your fear will cause you to lean back, this will cause your edge to stick hard and you will not be able to slide out the back end of your board. If you lean more forward, you can slide out the back end of the board allowing you to scrub off speed slowing down, so don't panic.

Good luck, it's a blast.

btw, Vallo- I don't snowboard because it is cool, it is not a fad, it is not about fasion. When you have cut fresh tracks on the Rubybowl at Blackcomb, you will understand. A powder day is better than sex. biggrin.gif laugh.gif wink.gif

JoKeRkId613,

Your in Florida, E-85 (85% ethanol, 15% gasoline) is sold in 2 private locations. E-85 has an octane rating of 100-105 - it's almost race gas and the goverment subsidizes it.

Kennedy Space Center
3rd St & Ave C
Kennedy Space Center, FL 32815

Hurlburt Field
Building 90043
Hurlburt Field, FL 32544

Good luck getting into those facilities though.

Check out import concern before your buddy goes ahead. They are the most established and have a very good rep.

http://www.importconcern.ca/

There may be room for more, but it seems rep and connections are everything...
Would make it a difficult go.
others I can think of off the top of my head:
http://www.dkimports.ca/home.html
http://www.jns-imports.com/

there have been other fly-by-night operators as well.

as far as the vehicle, not bad on the performance side, style-wise, a sera would be way cooler IMHO.
The base engine in a sera is the same as a paseo, but the starlet can be swapped in. A little more work, but hey, gullwing doors are way cool.

I have a lot of fun with vegies.

I have no issues with eating meat, and I openly admit this to vegies. Most often they will attack me and ask wether I would butcher an animal myself....

My honest reply is that I have assisted my father in butcher a deer, twice. "But if dit makes you feel better both of the were road kill." - to my astonishment, this utterly repels them. I believed that this is the most humane method of eating meat, but there own prejudices cloud their judgement. It is not like there were killed for the enjoyment of the hunter.

My father hunts every year, in fact he is moose hunting right now. I would somewhat enjoy hunting however I know there are many avid hunters who enjoy it more and given the limited number of animals needed for culling, I prefer to give the joy to those who enjoy it more than me.

No issues here, it is part of nature.
