yeah no joke. i have decided that i am just too poor to ever be able to afford this mod.it would definitely be cool.
someone was saying that it isn't possible to ship the gtfour over here. why not? they ship r34 skylines over all the time. (well i guess not all the time but you get the point.) what difference would it be to ship a gt four? i suppose this might need to be in a different thread. not that i will ever be able to afford it but just curious. thanks far all the input that you have all provided kindasad.gif

it's not possible because the gt4 hasn't been through the crash testing procedures like the skyline has. motorex spent a heckuva lot of money enabling the skyline to be imported, and those that are, have to have a lot of work done to make them legal.

i'm with lagos. it's not being negative... most AWD conversions to cars that are not naturally AWD are done for rally racing, and they're constantly reinforcing/rebuilding the car. it's just not a feasible thing for a street car. even a "track car" for mot people here, wouldn't work, because most people drive their track cars a fair bit on the street. a true track car, that you NEVER drove on the street, and made any repairs, reinforcements or adjustments to EVERY time before you trailered it to the track, sure, that would be feasible.

you're basically making swiss cheese out of a pretty un-reinforced chassis to begin with. the gt4 6gen chass is totally different.

^^^ ditto.

while i think your asking price is more than fair, considering the year/condition and included parts... KBB does not take into account any type of engine replacement, which drastically lowers the value of the car.

good luck with the sale man!!! smile.gif

john, you're mean.

It's Homie the clownfish.
IPB Image
No I haven't got a picture of Nemo yet. Homie and the other one like him are different than
Nemo, he's yellowish orange. These are aggresive little bast**ds, and wouldn't let Nemo
have an anenomie, so today we moved one back in the corner just for him. smile.gif But I'm
sure Homie won't play that either. I'll take a pic of nemo tomorrow.

that's a gold stripe maroon clownfish, widely regarded as one of the most aggressive reef fish you can keep. watch your hands... they have cheekspines and sharp teeth. :-)

Did another fish eat it?

it was probably a crab that hitch-hiked in on the rocks... those fish might kill others out of territoriality, but they won't eat the other fish.

yes i do...right now i have a cover for shows but im looking into getting a new steering wheel, right now im low on funds so i'll get one when i have the cash.......and good lord all, why is it that when ever i post something it ends up being a war? I mean come on are we here to argue with each othedr and start **** or help each other out and compliment their cars.

And before I continue....yes i agree that my stering wheel looks bad but that doesn't mean that just because that isn't done, that my car shouldn't place. I'm not gonna go any further....im just disapointed in all the arguing and slamming that has been going on in 6gc latly. frown.gif

just speaking from experience, if you post in OT, you're going to get major random stuff being brought up in your thread... i thought this was definitely a general discussion thread, i would have put it there. i mean, it IS a thread about celicas.

Why The 2JZ-GTE Isn't Feasible

At the behest of Coomer, and myself, I'm writing this sticky so hopefully people will stop asking about this swap. Please read all of this, and if it doesn't answer your questions about this issue, PM me, please don't post on the board, you'll just get flamed, most likely by me. If you read it all and still have questions, PM, don't post!

The question asked: Can I swap a 2JZ-GTE engine (from a 93-98 Supra Twin Turbo) into my 6th Generation Celica?

The answer: Yes, but that's not a good question.

The question that SHOULD be asked instead: Can I swap a 2JZ-GTE engine (from a 93-98 Supra Twin Turbo) into my 6th Generation Celica and STILL KEEP it a Celica.

The answer to this better question: No.

The first question addressed to all of you who take the "with enough money, anything is possible" stance, which is a legitimate one. Yes, you could cut through the firewall, yes you could convert the Celica to rear-wheel-drive, yes, you could do the swap. This is a valid point, but I shudder to guess at how much all this would cost.

Practically speaking, you'd have to buy a complete Twin Turbo Supra to source all the parts you might need (engine, drive-train, and suspension), and if you did that, why not just drive it? You're going to tear apart an amazing car to put the engine in your Celica? What?!!?

Ok, now to address the specifics of why you CAN'T reasonably do this swap:

1) 2JZ-GTE engines are not cheap. You think it's a lot to pay $3,000 for a 3S-GTE clip? A Supra clip will set you back anywhere from $6,000-$10,000. And that's just for the engine. You still have all of the massive custom work, and you need all of the Supra suspension and drive-train, so essentially you need the whole car. If you have 10 grand laying around to put into your Celica, call me, and I will build you the baddest one in the country. There are better ways to spend that money on a 6th Gen Celica.

2) The 2JZ-GTE is an Inline 6 Cylinder engine, mounted longitudinally. The 5S-FE and 7A-FE engines are both 4 cylinders, mounted transversely.

The best way to understand this: open your hood; see how the engine is oriented where the long sides are parallel to the bumper, essentially sideways? The Supra engine is mounted so the long sides are parallel to the fenders. Most rear-wheel-drive sports cars, like the Supra, have their engine mounted longitudinally, whereas front-wheel-drive cars, like the Celica, usually are transverse. This immediately poses the problem of mounting the engine. The Celica engine bay was not meant to ever have a longitudinally mounted engine in it.

3) The 2JZ-GTE is an Inline 6 Cylinder engine. The 7A-FE and 5S-FE are 4 cylinders.

The Supra engine is a LOT bigger that the Celica engines, it is a lot longer. Even if you could overcome the mounting issue (#2) you have the size difference. In order to fit the 2JZ in the Celica bay, you would have to do one of 2 things:

A) Extend the bumper and frame forward about a foot with custom body work, but at the same time destroying the head-on collision safeguards, and also destroying the structural integrity of the Celica frame. Did I mention that this makes the car illegal to drive on the street?
B) Cut into the firewall (the wall between you in the interior and the engine bay), to extend the engine bay to the rear, thus destroying any protection you have against a possible fire (it is called a FIREwall) and again, making the car illegal to drive on the street for a lot of reasons.

At this point I feel I should explain what I mean by "illegal" in the above situations. I'm not talking about emissions/smog, or CARB, or parts meant for "off-road use only." We all know you can get around most of that. I'm talking about "illegal" like the authorities take away the car and don't give it back. You cannot get a car with a cut firewall legally titled in ANY state, no matter who you know, the same for a car with the crash-test safeguards removed. They aren't legally considered cars at this point, just scrap.

4) If those weren't enough to deter you, you still have to convert the Celica to rear-wheel-drive. This is possible, but it will cost a lot of money, and isn't really relevant by this point. If you have come this far successfully, you've paid for at least 2 complete Supra TTs, minimum, probably closer to 3. There are other points I could go into, but by this point, if you aren't insane and Bill Gates, you're out. If not, buy me a Supra! Obviously you have more money than God.

he wasn't there today when i stopped by... should be in tomorrow... basically, the alarm is aware of all the signals going up and down all the wires it is hooked up to... and those are the same wires as the turbo timer needs to hook up to. the alarm detects the foreign signals, and doesn't allow the turbo timer signal to keep the car running to move on the wire... either because it thinks it is one of it's own signals, or whatever, i don't know. all i know is that the alarm cuts off the TT signals, and the relays basically fool the alarm into thinking the TT isn't there or that the signals on the wires are coming from the alarm and not the TT... that's the basic theory. trust me, i tried the way you are suggesting on my celica, and i never could get it to work.

don't use the camry/solara tranny for the 3sgte... keoni on celica.net did and the gearing is terrible, the powerband on the tranny just doesn't match the engine.

you could do a 3sgte auto easily with a GT auto tranny if you got a standalone ECU... and actually that is a preferable option to many, lots of TT supras with mucho HP have autos, because you take out the human error in shifting... just let the computer do it.

coomer, that won't work... we had to do this at the custom shop i used to manage a few times... you have to use 4-6 relays, depending on the car and the alarm you use. i can ask the guy that knew how to do it for more details next week when i drop off my explorer to get the amps mounted.

it's great man, i'm thinking about selling it tho, seeing as i'm moving back to the DC area, where there is winter, and i finally have made some progress on the gt4, it's going into the shop this week for about 3 months, and i was to focus solely on it for awhile, and that darn mazda is so distracting because there are SO many parts out there for it. i'll post some pics up later today.

i have a HKS Japan Windmaster Exhaust that I could sell... it's been modified to fit the US floorplan, all you would have to do is seal up the extra 02 sensor bung the ST needs. IM me at Darhgo for details, or email me at meincl0@wfu.edu

dude i'm stepping in before people flame you.

it would do absolutely nothing. a CAI will get you just as cold air as hooking an IC. the reason you need an IC is b/c turbos a SCs compress the air to get more in the engine, so it gets hot, and the IC cools it down. but it's totally not necessary on a NA car, you would probably lose power.

Well, I'm glad to hear that you're keeping the GT-Four and will still be around. I was gonna ask about it on here but I wasn't sure if you made your plans public yet. wink.gif

The Mazdaspeed Protege looks like just like the Protege MP3 but has a turbo and upgraded suspension, right?

the front end, skirts wheels, brakes, wing, interior and exhaust are different too, but yeah. the brochure said there are like over 1000 changes from the regular protege.

thanks for the sentiments fellas. i'm keeping the st185 gt4... i just can't justify putting so much $$ into the 6th gen when i can put like a quarter of the money into the gt4 and get such a better performing car. i also really need something with more space. it was a really tough decision, but with the mods i want to do, it would cost me about 10 grand to finish up the 97, and i just can't put that kind of $$ into it.

i'm getting a mazdaspeed protege, my grandfather worked at ford and i can get a killer deal on it... test drove it today, it destroys my celi, even with all my mods.

anyway, i'm not going anywhere, i'll still be around. i still know more about 6th gens than most! you can't get rid of me that easily! smile.gif

ray, you got the wheel and mirrors, no prob.

coomer, i'm still goin on the buy, no worries smile.gif... the HIDs went to antuahn like 4 months ago, and i'm keeping the black wheels for the gt4.

what you thought we weren't going to order until the end of september? smile.gif its all good, just in the interest of getting the hood as soon as possible, seeing as after we pay all the money it will be more than 2 months before we get the hood.

shocking good or shocking bad?

the deadline is like probably a week or 2 after we get 15 people, as soon as possible.

i dunno how long that will take, though, to get 15 people... i mean, i could say, the end of august, but we might not have 15 by then, so then we'd have to move the deadline.

2nd gen 3sgte with the IC on top will fit under the stock hood, but the IC will heatsoak immediately. FM is the way to go.
