Hi I've been considering swaping a 3s-gte engine into my 94 Celica. I'm pretty sure i cracked my head on my 5s-fe, dont know the condition of the block. But i love my celica and have put some money into it, and have always wanted to swap this engine in. I'm kinda warey about the maintnece on a turbo engine, especially cause it's being swaped in. is it possible to find a 3s-GE? i couldnt find any. I'm not experinced enough to take on a project like this myself, so i would be having someone else do it. I would like to get your guys opion of some things, cause i know most of you are more experinced with this stuff then I am. these are the two engines ive been looking at. Both from the same seller. http://tigerjapanese.athoss.com/product_in...products_id=235 - $1,190 http://tigerjapanese.athoss.com/product_in...products_id=244 -$890 I was looking at these cause there in my price range and pretty low mileage. (25k-40k) 1. First thing i want to know if I'm looking in the right place. Another wards is this seller reliable and are the engines in good condition like they say. They dont seem to be as informitive as someother websites ive seen. It be great if someone here has bought from them before and can give me there opinion. 2.one of my questions is what generation 3s-gte engines are these? comes with awd tranny so does that mean its the 90-93 celica's? so 2nd gen? 3. Is the 1200 engine worth getting over the cheaper one? only thing i notice different is the intercooler that comes with it, or is this a more recent gen engine? would it be a better idea to buy an intercooler seperatly and get one i know is good, or would this one do? 4, I noticed they both come with an AWD tranny. i have the tranny that comes with the 5s-fe. would it be better to go with the AWD tranny? is there any more work to be done cause its AWD? My tranny cant be in the best of condition as its got 140k miles on it. And just doesnt feel like it used to. 5. I would be having it done in Sol Cal, im from San Diego. can anyone who lives in this area and has had a swap done for them recommend a place? (yea this should probably be in it on topic itself) 6. If these arnt good engines, can you recommend somethign that better? maybe newer gen or better price and quality. 7. I'm fron california, how will the 3s-gte go with are emission laws here? 8. Lastly can anyone give me a price estimate on how much it would cost to have the engine swaped in? after parts. $1,500? Thank you so much to whoever can help in the slightest bit. much appreciated |

what is the GT's powerband? at what rpm should you shift it? if i'm ever racing i usually shift at 6k from first to second and shift around 5600 in the other gears. the car just chirps harder when i rev it up higher in the first gear. Because of our cars high torque(but i dont understand why i thought it peaks at 4400rmp??), i usually jump up quite a bit from just shifting from 1st to 2nd. Ive even hung with a trans am for the first gear and half. then i got owned, but i was pretty surprised we were side by side for a second or two. but when i hit third and fourth gear i get pulled on by pretty much everything except civics. I always take the intergas at first and then by the time i'm in 5th gear there 2-3 cars a head of me. Our top end just blows. |

a short ram is going to give you less horsepower then the stock air box would(technically the stock air intake IS A CAI). It will be drawing in warm air, as the stock air box wont. Think about it. the ventilation in the celica is very poor, and its around parts that produce hot air. It is hot as **** where that air filter is going to be on your SRI. Your going to be drawing in hot air to your engine. another words its a downgrade. so it be pointless IMO to get SRI, unless your only motive would be the sound it produces. I didnt notice any less acceleration lag with my CAI, if anything better pickup and a tad bet more power overall. And it sounds awesome! talk to 95celgt if your intrested. |

defiantly sounds like the clutch slipping to me. this is exactly what happened to me. i had to get a new clutch. get it replaced quickly as possible before it starts slipping so bad you have to rev it to 5k to get it to move forward. (this is what happened to me) |

i also have the CAI from 95celgt. My car defiantly performs better with it. i noticed better pick up. and it sounds awesome. as anubis said it goes down into the left front fender for a nice blast of cold air. heres some pics of it from 95celgt. http://www.6gc.net/index.php?action=members&itu=1837 instillation was kinda difficult because of the fuses. as you can see he did something crazy with his fuses. which wasnt possible for me to do. PM me if you want more information. also i have one question that i hope someone can answer for me. 95celgt used 3" piping for our cai's. i was told that this was too big and it would perform better if the piping was smaller. is this true? cause the throttle body where it conects is smaller then 3" thas for sure. how would it sound different? can some one shed some light on this for me? |

i just installed my TWM shifter last night. which i must say made a huge difference. i am very pleased. but thats not to say i didnt go through many problems. like little clips falling down into the abbyss and never being able to find them again, then having to make my own make shift part. took me close to three hours. with the cups, all i did was grease them up really good with white grease. Then on a flat surface i put the ball in the cup and put all my weight down on it and it popped right in. I think greasing it up really helped. This was kinda dangerous cause on the second ball i slipped and smashed my knuckles on the table but eventually i got it in oohhhh the metal balls on the shifter are to small?? wtf. i dont know how thatt happened. did you compare the stock shifter to the twm? can you notice a difference? mine and your car are the same year. but mine is a GT and yours is an SX. i dunno if that would make a difference or not. well mine fit perfectly. you should call up toyota and find out if you have the stock shifter. maybe thats not the orginal one. you can probably order those balls from toyota for really cheap. 5-10 bucks. |

400 does seem very expensive. i would do it if they were polished and were $375. that sounds alot more reasonable. |

i might be intrested. i would like some more information though. like maybe some picutres, are they 4-2-1? what kind of gains can i expect? 10-12 hp at least? is there any modification needed at all for instillation? |

i never downshift into first. i always come to a stop and or a slow rolling sttop and rev it up a little bit and put it in. dont try it, it is bad for your car. sometimes i do wish i COULD be able to downshift it from 2nd to 1st when i'm going 15-20mph, for racing purposes. but you cant. its like this for every manual ive ever driven. |

yea as i told coomer before the fuse box was a pain. i mounted mine just a little bit higher up, put my piping right under it, and drilled a bolt into the metal area behind the fuse box. i also had to cut the piping in another spot. so i could put it at the right angle to get it down the hole. so its cut in three place. |

95celgt off this site makes CAI intakes. i have his in mine. you could ask him for advice. heres pictures of what it looks like http://www.6gc.net/index.php?action=members&itu=1837 As you can see it goes down into the left front fender for a nice blast of cold air. Its 3' piping which is quite a bit bigger then 2.25. what are the disadvatages and advatages of bigger piping vs smaller pipping? i would think with smaller piping the air vilocity might be much greater. but with bigger piping you might let more cold air in, but then again the trottle body where the pipe connects is probably about 2.25'. how will it sound different? Mine sounds very nice. It has a very deep deeep growl when you press on the gas. Its very aggressive. I performs better too. i noticed better pick up. The car seem to just want to pickup and go more so then before. I noticed a little bit better acceleration at higher rpms also. |
