Is there any type of rhythm to the noise? If so, could be the wheel bearing. Usually it's a deep, consistent, rhythmic hum. Yup that fits the description. Completely disassembled the driver side knuckle/hub/bearing. The seal(just a sweep maybe?) on the inner side where the cv axle meets the knuckle housing is toast, though. Didn't buy a replacement with the bearing and seal. Guess the car will be down until Monday. |

1998 ST204 Liftback. Having a distinct, pretty loud rumbling that sounds like it's coming from the front left, though it could be the right. Happens anytime the car isn't turning to the right in the slightest. Straight or left turns, loud rumble, front left. I'm thinking this is a wheel bearing problem. I replaced both CV joints within two years. A little confused as to where the sound seems to be coming from, because I'd assume the rumble would be from the right end if I was turning left, putting added force in the right side. So anyway, I went ahead and picked up two new bearings and seals, removed the left steering knuckle and I'm not able to simulate any roughness in the bearing whatsoever. Half day at work tomorrow so I'm going to go ahead and remove the right side and see if there's any difference. Hoping to find a smoking gun, if not then I'll have two new bearings installed anyway. The current bearings are original. I have a press and whatever else I'll need at work, but does anyone have any tips when it comes to pressing these hubs out of the knuckle, pulling the old bearing off and pressing new ones in that might not be common sense? I read the guide someone posted on here a while back that helped with general removal of the knuckle. Also any tips on what to look for as far as this rumbling sound other than the bearings would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

Hey all one of my cables has come completely in half at the core. No luck at any junkyards on the island. Looking for shift cables for a 1998 Celica GT ST204 |

Sorry for the late response. Nice find, thanks! This might be a dumb question.. Maybe they're universal throughout make, I'm clueless, but how do I know which cables are compatible with my car? |

It's a pretty simple thing to do! I think there's one car guy on the island with you...808celica or something like that. I don't know how far apart you guys are, but you never know. Just look for people parting out GT's on here! Actually I met 808celica while about to push my car out of an auto parts store parking lot over here haha. Was the first guy to suggest shift cables. I called our toyota servco here, $610 for cables. Damn! |

you need new shifter cable set. the bottom gears push the cable, the cable is frayed or broken hence no push, pull is probably working by a couple strands Thanks for the reply. You're the second person to tell me shift cables. I'm having trouble finding a great source to buy these from and a guide to replace them. I'm not much of a car mechanic, maritime primarily. |

I have a 1998 GT lift back with 101k miles. It started as a soft, rubbery feeling when shifting into 2nd 4th or reverse to not being able to shift into those gears at all. Once it got in gear it was fine. 1st 3rd and 5th work wonderfully. I can't shift into the bottom gears while the car is off. Before reverse went out completely, I could roll the car in first a few inches, then shift reverse. Ideas? Thanks getting tired of finding inclines to park on and/or having people run out of stores to ask if I need help starting my car because I'm pushing it out of the stall:p |
