I'll be back in FL by then and deploying shortly thereafter so unfortunately I'm a no-go this time around. I'll be moving back to the Charlotte area around Feb next year and starting school at NTI though!

Today I put in my ebay short ram intake and reset my air-fuel ratio and got 25+ hp to the wheels! laugh.gif laugh.gif just kidding about the hp, but that was step one to getting the cold air box project going. tongue.gif

I ordered the $28 one off ebay and will probably switch filters depending on quality plus it had free shipping. Going to custom build a cold air box as shown in the how-tos.

Thanks mindkiller, I'll give it a shot when I tackle it again. Had to put it all back together for the day cuz the sun was going down and the wife was getting hungry. It's got some PB blaster soakin right now so hopefully when I get back to it it won't be too hard.

good news and bad news. Good news is, I got the throttle body off no problem and now know how to. Bad news: Mr impatient (me) stripped one of the screws to the IACV, and was unable to properly clean it by taking it off. I had to spray some carb n throttle body cleaner down the port in the throttle body to get it somewhat cleaned. Will have to figure something out to get it done right. kindasad.gif

Taking the throttle body off today to clean it and the IACV. Some pics:

Intake removed and a picture of the vacuum hoses for reference

Just the whole engine bay

Throttle body removed

Carbon!! This is how the inside of the intake manifold looks too.

Throttle Body off

Now waiting for PB blaster to get the IACV screws out! More to come.

Update! I just put the new dist cap and rotor i got from rock auto on the car and snapped some pics.

These were from right after I bought it. It was very dirty.

New speakers needed!

Looks nasty in there

Injector #3 has something going on

That was the old #3 spark plug

Pitted old distributor rotor

Engine bay with the new plugs, wires, cap and rotor.

Horrible paint and some body work needed

More bad paint visuals

I'll be in Charlotte area end of May, first few days of June then deploying until September. I'll do my best to make it but no guarantees. I'll keep an eye out for set dates and see what I can make happen. Hopefully by then the Slyph will be reliable enough for a drive that far!

Is it relatively close to the same procedure for the 7a?

I've never pulled a throttle body off before, and am planning on doing so to clean it up, as well as the IACV. Any pointers from anyone who has done it before would be great. I've seen in the repair manuals in the stickies that there are some gaskets that should not be reused (I know that you shouldn't reuse any gaskets ever) but which ones and how many will I need? Tryin to save some dollars here by doing stuff myself instead of having the dealership do it. Any other big "gotchas" for removing the TB? Has anyone has seen a how-to that I've overlooked? Sorry for the 21 questions...

I'll be moving to Harrisburg early next year. Grew up in Winston-Salem, and lived all around Charlotte; at UNC Charlotte, Matthews, Indian Trail and Midland for a while. Going to be going to NASCAR tech once I get out of the Air Force!

Thanks Box, found it on Rockauto.com.

For anyone else who may ever need this:

Go to rockauto.com. Under the Part Catalog tab, choose the options: Toyota, 1995, Celica, 1.8L L4, Fuel/Air, Throttle Body Gasket. It is th top one, and like the 5S, the 7A's too looks like a frog face. laugh.gif

After scouring the interwebz for this confounded gasket, the only place I have found one is at dealerdirectparts.com. The local dealership wants $13 for it and I think they are crazy. Has anyone ever used that website or know of somewhere else to get the gasket? Thanks in advance

Update: yesterday evening I checked my dist cap and rotor and found that they need replacing. Badly. The rotor contact it so pitted it looks like 40 grit sand paper. I'll be picking up the parts to replace tomorrow, then spending saturday installing them, as well as pulling off the throttle body and cleaning it and the IACV. I'll be taking some before and after pics cuz that area is freakin dirty (no plastic splash guard underneath the car). But now that I just took the cap off and pulled the rotor out then just put them back in, (hope I'm not speaking too soon...) the car is running like a champ! Didn't stall or die on the way to work this morning, idled normally in the 600-900 range depending on engine temp. And since i doubt it has ever been done, instead of crimping or plugging the coolant lines to the IACV, I'm going to drain and flush the coolant system too and put fresh stuff in. Has anybody here cleaned the IACV on their 7A before? I searched but only found stuff for the 5S. Also thanks for the info mindkiller.

QUOTE (b22ri22an @ Apr 2, 2013 - 12:02 AM) *
my problem is the steady job... its that the steady job brings tons of maintenance that eats project money like a kid in a candy store.... the local mechanic calls me job security. as we speak he is fixing my power steering leak and next replacing lower control arms, power steering fluid killed my bushings and my belts

b22ri22an, If you don't mind my asking, how much is that power sterring fix running you and what are they doing exactly? I've got a leak too and the complete right underside of my car looks terrible. I changed the oil this weekend, and between the time i got my car on the lift and raised it to drain the oil, fluid had ran down onto my tire and started collecting on the lift. that happened in less than 10 minutes. It doesn't help that my oil pan gasket is leaking too, and I'd put money saying the rear main seal is too but no way to really tell until I got the power steering and oil pan gasket fixed.

And njccmd that's a nice shiny flywheel! I've got to change mine clutch as well..

Time for new spark gaskets!

I've never even heard of those o.O

I probally should have checked to see if that engine even has the gaskets, which are pretty much pretty O-rings. Only reason I stated that is because I recently had to change some on another vehicle that was leaking oil into the spark tubes. Which those were on the top of the valve cover, not the bottom, which yours looks like its leaking somewhere at the bottom of the spark tube itself.

yeah when i changed the plugs and wires, the wire tubes were dry, just the plugs looked like crap. I got pics on the fist page of the thread just incase you didn't see them. #2 was the plug the wasn't detonating completely.
