Changed my valve cover gasket to fix a significant oil leak down the front of the engine. It continually dripped down onto the exhaust causing smoking while driving and filling my garage with smoke after parking it. Easy enough. Noticed two of the four valve cover nuts were loose and could be unscrewed by hand.... might be why it was leaking, huh? Celica valve cover removed for gasket change by kfanciu, on Flickr Celica valve cover spark plug grommets by kfanciu, on Flickr Also changed my gearbox/engine mount (front). Tried to change the rear but couldn't get it out because the power steering rack is too close (discussion). I'm pretty happy with it. Not a noticeable upgrade to anyone other than the driver -- the light output just looks like it 'should' compared with newer vehicles with halogens, rather than the very dim yellowish standard bulbs. I do notice a little bit of glare on street signs so I think these are projecting scattered light above what the stock bulbs do, but it doesn't seem like enough to cause blinding issues. |

they still look a it yellowish? It looks like the left headlight is stock while the right one has the Silverstars Correct. Passenger side is stock Sylvania low beams, driver's side is the Silverstar Ultra high beam bulb. 'before & after' if you will. |

I have 95 celica with the stock headlights and i want to get rid of the old looking light color ..i try to use hid but they where tooooooo bright so i had to remove them amd im stock with my old bulbs again any ideas on what to do to get that white blueish looking lights? For the past three years I have used the Sylvania Silver Stars (high beam bulbs) model number 9005 for both the low and high beams. To fit the low beam receptor you have to grind out the two ridges ( inside top of plastic connector between the two metal pins). The high beam bulb version does not have the black cap on end of the bulb which diffuses the light, but also reduces the brightness. Fortunately, the design of the glass headlight diffuses the light appropriately. In lieu of shelling out for JDM projectors or a projector conversion so I can put HIDs in, I took your advice and got a set of Sylvania Silverstar Ultra 9005's from Amazon ($17 each). I used a chisel to scrape out the two plastic guides so they would fit the low beam connector. Big difference! Thanks for the tip. |

Ignition Coil for the win! Swapped it out with a new one and it started right up. Thanks everyone for your help. |

Forgot to mention: - Engine light is not on, no codes stored. - I swapped EFI relay with one of the fan ones thinking it might be that but no luck - tried multiple times spraying starter fluid into the intake after the air filter with no change. Throttle normal and 100%. This is what led me back to ignition |

Hello, I have a '95 Celica ST auto with the 1.8 liter, 177k miles. Car is completely stock, well maintained, and has run with no issues until now. It drove normally until a couple weeks ago while driving it all of a sudden, at low speed, sputtered a little then died and would not restart. It turns over normally (not fast), just won't start. The gas light had just come on, so I tried putting another gallon of fuel in to no avail. I towed it home and have been troubleshooting since but I'm stumped. What I've done: Checked for spark: spark is there, but not "bright blue" like the Chilton says it should be. Was more orange/blue. - replaced plugs (gapped to 0.31) - tested wire resistance - less than 10k ohms so OK. Distributor cap posts had a thin white crust on them, and rotor looked 'burned', with a thin black layer of crust and well worn - replaced cap and rotor - signal generator resistance G+ to G- = 214ohms, NE+ to NE- = 424ohms (both in spec) - ignition coil Primary Resistance (+ to -) = 1.7 ohms, Secondary Resistance (+ to terminal) = 11.4ohms (both in spec) I looked to check the Crank Position Sensor resistance but this engine/year does not appear to have one. - Fuel pump primes when jumping the +B and FP terminals, as well as when attempting to turn over. - fuel inlet pipe feels like it's getting pressurized when jumping fuel pump - Timing belt was changed 30k miles / 3 1/2 years ago. At this point, the only thing left I can think of is: 1) test fuel pressure -- I'd have to borrow a gauge 2) compression test -- also need a gauge, although I highly doubt something internal broke as the car has run perfectly up until now Is there something I'm missing? Should I just try replacing the ignition coil and/or distributor? Thanks |
