hehehe, i hate being a bum =P. and i can never learn enough to fix me own car cause i'd break it first before i fix anything. it's funny, gimme a computer and i can fix it but gimme a car &i'm clueless. i think if i tried fixing somn, it would end up becoming a michael bay movie.

but yesh, it actually wasn't the gasket thing it is the valve seal, see i didn't even remember how to describe it =P

i know DGAF. i luv it =). luv driving it, etc. other than these mechanical problems, there are also paint issues roof surface and the rear wing surface. that and sealant around the doors are loose (no water leakage though). those aren't 'fix it right now' issues, but they do devalue the vehicle visually.

next step is i plan to get a 2nd opinion. maybe 3rd from other mechanics/auto-inclined peepz.

er, forgot to add that i am NOT mechanically inclined at all. iz why i have mechanics to fix it for me =P.

and the burn only happens at startups, not during.

hi ya'll,

first all. i use my 1999 Celica GT as transportation and that's pretty much it. i don't invest any mod $ into it. it's standard everything except the alarm.

got some bad news at the latest oil change: head gasket leak is causing my exhaust manifold/pipes to burn some oil and causing huge billows of smoke during engine start. it's the worst at COLD start, but more minor after that. my mechanic says to keep driving it and not waste $ to fix it. my friend says that if i'm not careful, the leak will worsen and if i don't watch the oil level and there isn't enough the piston might burn a hold through the engine or somn. mechanic says estimated part&labor is $1,000

5speed stick transmission has ball bearing trouble. the labor & parts is somn like $1,000

so it could be around $2,000+ or i can trade it in and get new car.

i bought this one in 2005 @$12,000. it's only been 5 years and @$2,400a year. i feel like i want to get my money's worth and i want to keep driving it. i'm thinking about fixing it and just continue to drive it. is this wise or is it time to trade up and get a new vehicle?

the head gasket leak is a concern of mine. i don't want to forget to add oil in and allow the leak to burn a hole in the engine.

will having ball bearing noise problems inside of the transmission be OK or should i fix it lest it cause any other issues?

either way these 2 are fairly labor-intensive tasks. what do you guys think i should do? i do like 6G and i luv driving it... but even if i fix this and it becomes a money dump... i'd rather get a new vehicle. when the head gasket is changed out, do i have to change ALL the head gasket or just the one that's causing issues?

re: ball bearing, can i change all of it?

yo manny, long time no shee =P. how time flies.

i have to disagree with the notion of multichannel music trying to replicate stereo.

adding the surrounds enables the acoustics to fill out much better than than simply stereo. no matter how hard you try, the pair of stereo speakers aren't able to project sound that is coming from the back of you. i have a few mixtures of both stereo and 5.1 hybrid SACD recordings and my fav. are well recorded and mixed 5.1. a perfect example is pink floyd's dark side of the moon. hearing that in 5.1 means no going back to simply stereo. there's simply no going back... unfortunately, people have abandoned high-res. sound for puny sounding .mp3 because of convenience.

re: recorded. yesh, multichannel music is typically mixed (like pink floyd), although Star Trek Nemesis 5.1 track was actually recorded in multichannel with mixing to adjust levels.

@home, i have a 7.1 setup that can tackle sacd, dvda, home theater stuff (HD), unfortunately... my room acoustics sux. your room can determine how well things can sound.

furthermore, more $ doesn't mean it is automatically going to sound awesome. there's a certain threshhold of $ vs. performance where once you cross it, it's gonna become more about bling than sound quality. most people's ears are going to fail to detect that difference anyways.

that's why i have a desire to move that type of a setup to car. the car has the perfect audio environment (inside the car, i know there's a craptastic amount of noise pollution outside of the car) given the correct variables.

^well it might be 2late, but it's actually happening! =P. i hope they're smart enough to license that out to other mfr. so universal players can happen.

there are already hard disks made for such applications.

i haven't seen any DD's able to handle the same things a carputer can.

r those touchscreen?

i thought there were US laws prohibiting video on the front seats? back is OK, since they're not driving. does it vary state by state? how about New England states?

my issue with DD is that it still doesn't do EVERYTHING a carputer does.... so do people go with carputers+touchscreen? for example, DD doesn't handle flac/ogg and many prop. formats that could be handled by carputers. plus, with carputers, u can replace the GPS/map program if you don't like it. DD's with hard installed GPS programs could suck... overtime. AND u can do surf off of public wifi (provided you clear the legal ramifications).

this rocks. aren't there shipping malls around that region to buy stuff anyways... though you new yorkers can probably buy the same goods @10-20% less than MA shops wink.gif. cost of living is through the roof.

IPB ImageIPB ImageIPB ImageIPB Image i'm so excited! i luv the beauty of 6g and will absolutely have a cargasm when i see so many 6g's lined up!!! i'm bringing my camera IPB Image

count me in!!! wow! good thing i checked this board before the meet! i missed last meet whenever that was. biggrin.gif

i'm a bit confused after reading everything in this thread. what's the dilio with staying there and somn about buying tickets to see a guy with mustang or a mustache? what is with meeting up with who where what? confused.gif can someone clear everything up for me? do we need to bring somn to eat? is it one of those open BBQ parks? i also saw some other 6g meets where they tear up the airport fields, is it one of those open fields with pavement? i'll have to google earth that address when i get home to scope out the geography.

i'm coming from Boston, is there a caravan of 6g's going down from here? this is so cool, i didn't think there were that many 6g owners in Nor'East region. i'm gonna have to wash my car, it was originally silver but it's so dirty it looks black rolleyes.gif

on last year's video (i never saw so many 6g's!IPB Image), i saw some 5g and older vehicles... i thought this was 6g only? kindasad.gif

PS sorry about your loss Tina. frown.gif hope u feel better.

here in New England, it happens quite frequently during winter-times. it's been fairly mild, so it's OK this year. but early last week (near 0°F) , after 15minutes autostart, my door was STILL frozen. i think there's a design flaw in celicas when temps go so low that even after you start the car for 15+minutes and heat kix in, your door just won't close! lol.

i could open the door, get in, but when i attemp to close the door, it boundes off the car and swings out. it's a stick shift, so i had to use my left hand to hold the door close, while i shift and steer at the same time. i felt like indiana jones =D

vissi, there's a stretch of i93 north here that's sorta' like the autoban. the speed limit is 75, but people drive at a MINIMUM of 100mph and go upwards of 120+mph. as long as my celica's ass doesn't start to take off i'm OK to take out the spoiler.

re: mods, that's what i mean about taking it out, there'll be water issues. NO ONE has done this mod? i'm interested in seeing what other people do. hurley, don't those stickers peel off after a while and water seeps in?

'99 GT hatchback owner. is there a kit to just take out the rear spoiler/fin and make it smooth? does the fin really kick in when i go 100mph+? i thought it's just for decoration?
