I know this is a 6th gen forum, but I have a 5th gen and I know a lot of people here are experienced with the 3s-gte This is an ST185 with a JDM engine in it. All stock. A few days ago, my car just randomly shut off on the freeway. I was merging lanes and was accelerating. I was able to start it while it was coasting but then it did it again at an intersection a few minutes later. The engine was idling fine, then soon as I hit the gas the RPM's dropped and the engine died. Also, there was a bit of white smoke that came out of the hood scoop. I could not get the car to start again, I let it sit for a few minutes and tried it again, then the car started. The car seemed to run fine for a while after that. Then today it started happening again. I was waiting for the light to change and I shifted and hit the gas to go, but the engine just died. I could not get it to start after that. Starter would turn but the engine would not start up. I let it sit for about 5 minutes then the car started up again. Whenever I was stopped at an intersection, the car would run fine in idle. When I pressed the gas a little, the RPM's would drop till the car was about to stall. If it stalled, I could not start it again untill I let it sit for a while. I let up on the gas and it would idle again. I held down the clutch pedal and hit the gas pedal a couple more times and it kept happening, RPM would drop. If I did'nt let up on the gas when the RPM's dropped the car would stall. Once I turned the car OFF with the key while it was in idle because pressing the gas made the rpms drop. Turned the car back on and it worked fine. I pulled into a gas station and opened the hood while it was still running. I saw a little bit of smoke around the front passengerside area of the engine. Checked my fluids and they all seemed fine. Gas tank was half full so I put some gas into it. The car died a couple more times after that while it was still rolling. I did'nt have as much trouble getting it started up again while the car was still rolling. I parked at a shopping center and had my GF pick me up. This is not a constant problem either, most of the time the car works fine when I press the gas, it's just randomly I would get no acceleration when I hit the gas pedal and the RPM's would drop and the car would die. I am not a mechanic by any means. I take my car to a special shop that is good with the all-trac, but it's an hour and a half away. I can do some work on the car but I do not know a lot of the termonology or where things are located. I tried doing the paper clip thing in the diagnostic port, but I could'nt get any check engine light to blink or anything. I figured out how to check the spark plugs, I don't have a gap tool but heres some pictures of them, should they be all black like that? |

So just to confirm. You have a 92' Alltrac which had a JDM 3sgte in it already with only 60k in "good condition", and you swapped it out for a different JDM 3sgte? What was the reason? Could it have anything to do with this? http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showto...mp;#entry686106 yup, I bought a new engine cause the repair shop said the cylinders were bad, took it to a mechanic who specialized in the car and he changed the engine for me, then informed me, after I already had the work done, that the old engine was fine and it was just the turbo that was making it smoking he did a really great job though, fabricated a new downpipe for me, and did a lot of paint and touchup work on engine bay to make it look nicer, he said he'll do any work I ever want on the car for cheep cause I paid him so much too, so all in all I can't complain. Now I have an extra engine out of the whole thing which brings me to this thread... I'm not trying to cheat anybody outta anything here, don't get me wrong. Toyota Todd will probly vouch for me and I know somebody else who frequents these forums, I dunno his forum name only his IRL name... maybe I can get him to post here for me tonight, he's gonna be at a house party I'm going to I thought it was a USDM but if it's JDM I'll need to update the topic. Can I get a second confirmation that it's a JDM and not a USDM |

my mechanic is gonna be pissed about the harness.... turbos not a prob, its abit fugly for only 60k miles this was the stocker in your alltrack, how is mileage so low? what year alltrack? This is not the orignal stock engine, previous owner said it was replaced and had about 40k miles on it, the mechanic estimated about 60k from looking at it. He has lots of experience with import engine swaps, which is why I took the car to him. Heres the ECU, that I had sitting in my car when I drove home for some reason heh. |

Columbus, the engine is closer to dayton right now though pics? and this is just the engine, no harness, ecu, turbo? im just outside dayton I went and bought a cable to get the pictures off my phone, it has the ecu and turbo, the berings in the turbo are compleatly destroyed and need to be replaced, probly needs a new harness, like I said all the wires and tubes are cut up. Since you live close I can make arrangements for you to pick the engine up if you want to buy it. Now to figure out how to use this wire to post those pictures. |

For those in Cali, it is ILLEGAL to drop in the 3sgte engine in exchange of your 7afe or 5sfe. The 3SGTE does not have a EGR and this particular engine is not CALI spec so can't be done. This is the USDM, it does have an EGR valve. Edit: CaliJeff just informed me in a PM that it's illegal to put an engine in a car that it did'nt come with in Cali. So yes, in California it's illegal to have a 3s-gte in a 6th gen celica. If you have a bad engine in a 5th gen, you can put this engine in it legally in california. This engine does have an EGR valve. Thanks for the clerification CaliJeff This is the engine from my 92' alltrac, I had a JDM installed and I'm selling the old engine. I have a USDM 3S-GTE with about 60k miles on it. Mechanic who put in my JDM said it was in very good condition. The stock turbo bearings are compleatly destroyed, but I'm guessing that wont matter much here.... Nearly all the tubes and wires have been cut and need to be replaced. It's pretty much a compleate motor without the transmission. I put Royal Purple oil in it, changed every 2000-3000 miles. My car is compleatly stock. (well except for the jdm now I have some pictures from a cellphone, I'll post them soon as I can get them off the phone. It's about 2 hours away from me in a garage right now soon as I have a chance I'll bring a good camara to take better pictures if needed. Compleatly legal in states with emissions inspections. I will not sell parts off of it Buyer pays shipping, starting at $1500 you can e-mail me at zeros \at\ 0sanity.com or message me on aim -> mavenzz kthx where in ohio are you? Columbus, the engine is closer to dayton right now though |

got an update the mechanic is quoting $2000 to install the engine, but he said he has to ask the owner if it's okay to install because he's worried about emissions check he also said to make sure to check the warrenty on the engine is there any way to prove to him that it would pass emissions? |

The shop I normally use to get help with my car is shut down. I took it to a nearby place but they wanted to charge me $600 for $50 of hoses and like $1000 in labor for a simple hose change and radiator flush. So I nixed that and am now looking for a better place that knows the 92' alltrac and won't try to rip me off. The engine started smoking last night. White smoke, it's coming from the engine and the exaust. It seems to happen randomly which is why I'm having such a problem with it. When I drive it around then stop at an intersection it starts to emit white smoke for a little bit. Then it stops. It usually stops smoking by the time I can jump out of my car and flip the hood open. Sometimes it does it, sometimes it does'nt, it seems really random. Although it may do it a little and I just do'nt see it sometimes. I checked the fluid levels, seems okay. Although I can't even see the coolant tank to see if it's full or low. I pulled out the cap and there was coolent on the end of the hose. So if anybody knows a good shop in columbus that knows the alltrac please send me a message. (considering going to the toyota dealer's shop) okay so I took it to a shop at the recomendataion of a friend near here, also visits these forums they said the engine failed a compression check on the cylinders and its cheeper to replace the engine instead of rebuilding it. So the guy tried to find me an engine and all he could find was a $4000 and $7000 usdm engine. I asked him if he looked for JDM engines too, he said no and did'nt seem to want to even try looking. So I'm trying to hunt down a JDM 3s-gte for the 5th gen alltrac. I know this is a 6th gen forum, but a lot of you have experience with the 3s-gte obviously heres some I found on ebay motors, the auctions end soon http://tinyurl.com/5at4jf http://tinyurl.com/5clgbh anybody have any experience with getting engines on ebay? seems kinda risky :\ heres a site I found gotjdm http://tinyurl.com/6dzoqr http://tinyurl.com/5q4x78 heres one from jdm tiger http://tinyurl.com/6fesul so which one should I go with? any recomendations of other places? just lookin for some help here thanks |

got this fixed btw, tried the magnet but it was all the way in the oil pan I think, so I dropped the oil pan and got it out. Engine is still smokeing so I took it to the shop and it failed a compression check, so now they are telling me I need a new engine. looking at a jdm 3sgte instead of a usdm |

I know this is a 6th gen forum, but I know a lot of you have the 3s-gte. I have a 92 all-trac turbo with 183k miles on it. It has a new engine with about 30-40k miles on it. Car is compleatly stock. I had a question about the turbo gage. Heres a picture of the gage -> http://www.retroarcade.com/rfm/celica/dscf0098.jpg I don't know a whole lot about turbo's and I was asking a friend what the gage ment exactly. There is a negative part to the left, a 0 line, then a positive to the right. Anyways he said it is a pressure censor and it should idle at 0. My gage does not however, it idles all the way to the left. I'm not sure if he knows what he's talking about either though, so I thought I would ask some people I can trust... which brings me here. So is there something horribly wrong with my turbo that I need to get fixed? Or is it supposed to idle to the left and only go up when I'm driving it? Any help or tips are welcome, I'm trying to preserve this car as long as I can. |
