Good thread. My '97 GT also has a noice from the front of the engine when cold. My first guess was the accessories or belt, but I had the belts off to change them and I ran the engine. No rattle. I've been thinking of having a mechanic look at it. The diagnosis here of timing belt slapping on the inside of the front cover matches the sound. I'll have to check when my timing belt was changed but at 149K I don't think I should need it yet. Still, I may have it checked as I really don't like this going on and my daughter is the primary driver. Later, |

Well the stress cracks along my radiator just gave way so I'll be putting in a new radiator this week-end. I've replaced the main radiator hoses already so this time, while it's drained, I want to tackle all the other coolant hoses. At 11 years and 137K mi it's time. I assume there are a pair that go around behind the engine to the fire-wall for the heater core. Working back there isn't much fun so I've searched the forums for any help changing them and not found anything. Does anyone have any tips for changing the heater core hoses? Do I work from underneath, around the side, or where? Is there something I should remove to get good (better?) access? Are there any other hoses I need to find and change? Thanks in advance!~ |

I really don't think the tranny is slipping because I'd expect to hear the engine revs go up like I hit neutral for an instant and I don't, anyway that was my experence with a slipping tranny years ago. I'll check the tach anyway. The sense of bogging down is just after the shift, at the lower rpm due to the upshift. |

I'm looking for experience to solve this problem, really an annoyance. Ideas of what it 'could' be I've got but haven't found anything to solve this yet. Accelerating wide open or hard throttle there is a power gap, lag, hesitation, bog, just after gear shifts. It's an automatic. It's noticable at the shift to 2 and 3, where you have the power on full. It just lasts for probably less than a second and then the engine is back full power. If you accelerate at partial or moderate full throttle it does not happen. This has been going on for a while, maybe a year - it didn't start all of a sudden. Recent maintenance includes plugs, spark wires, rotor & cap, checked the intake path and found/fixed break in hose after the air cleaner, all the hoses look/feel good, and it otherwise runs great. Seems like maybe an ignition timing or vacuum/controls thing since it happens just after the engine's made a change in revs and manifold pressure and timing have changed/are changing. But I haven't found anything wrong. '97 ST204 (way cool I figured that outm huh? ) at 140k mi. Timing belt's been done. 2nd Owner - well taken care of, probably driven a bit hard by my 20 yo daughter. As for things that need attention, valve guides are probably worn as seen by smoke on start-up (wouldn't cause this problem), and I'm wondering if the valves need adjusting as the top of the engine seems noisy to me (I've had a few toyotas so I know they are often a bit noisy around the valves). Anyone had anything like this and figured it out? TIA, |

Thanks. I have been using search on the forum too. As I'm a member of many forums for years I do understand the pain of seeing the same question over and over and the value of finding what's been discussed. The JDMs I'm looking at on eBay are not the projectors. I'm expecting they take the same bulb as US, but maybe I should ask. I've closely inspected the picture vs a US headlamp (mostly concerned about the low beam) picture and the lense patern look the same - anyway, best as you can tell on an enlarged eBay picture. This is what I'm looking at: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...A:IT&ih=016 Fr my US 1997 GT with an ouwie on the front corner. |

I've been shopping used parts to help out the guy fixing my '97 GT after a fender bender (driver's front corner). I'm considering a JDM headlamp and highbeam via eBay from a seller in Japan. Are these the same parts as used in the US? I'm not adding or customizing, just trying to pay far less than dealer prices. I know some countries have/had different lighting laws. And there aren't any of these in wrecking yards (oh yeah, now they are auto dismanters/recyclers!). Recommnedations? TIA |
