Honestly, use Ubuntu or a more plausable port of linux, but personally, stick with a performance edition of XP. Pm me if you want hooked up? How big is the hdd? and what ghz is the atom?

The *Nix distro's aimed for multimedia use are bloated these days. Plus there isn't the same choice when it comes to front ends and GPS software.

I use a "full-fat" XP Pro because I had issues with USB drivers when I tried NLite and the like. Boot time is about as long as it takes me to get out of the drive so I'm not worried about speeding it up. The HDD is 80Gb and partitioned to be 15Gb for Windows and Apps and the rest for multimedia

QUOTE (Ruroniarc @ May 23, 2009 - 7:10 AM) *
I have a couple of questions.

First: What exactly do you do with it? I mean, I've always wanted to do this to my car, but I've questioned the... overall point over the fact of "Hey! Guys! I did it!"

Second: Power supply wise, where did you draw power from? Did you draw a new circuit from your battery? Is it running DC or do you have to convert it to AC first?

Third: That's a touch screen right? Is it difficult to work your way around the OS?

And lastly: I REALLY WANNA DO THIS! I've been thinking about doing it since I got my car. No, before that!

I use it for music and GPS mainly, but you can do anything. The next step is to replace the heater controls and I might tap in to the electric windows. You can get tyre (tire for you guys wink.gif ) pressure monitoring plug-ins and reverse cameras. The list is endless.

For the PSU I'm using a M3-ATX. It takes 12v straight from the car battery and makes it suitable for the PC. It's tiny too!

It is a touchscreen but I also have a mouse if I need to do any OS stuff, not that you have to very often.

The full build thread is here

Below are some of the build pics for the PC itself

The software is called FreeICE, but I'm tempted to use Centrafuse in the future.
Boot time is about 20 seconds because I'm using hibernate, although a fresh boot might be quicker as I've got 1Gb of ram.
The screen is a bit of a monster to be honest. I had a Xenarc from my previous install and was given a dead TMR screen so I thought I'd see what I could do. The TMR screen had a faulty controller so I used the Controller and inverter from the Xenarc with the TMR screen. It's not very readable in the sun though so I might get a new TMR screen one day.

I've just got this finished today and thought I'd share

I'm using an ITX motherboard (With the dual-core Atom) with a S-ATA HDD, 1Gb Ram and the amp is in the box too.

And the final product. I really like the colour so might add it to the vents on each side and electric window controls.

What year is the car? I was looking to add them to mine and was told there was a difference between pre and post facelift models. I can't comment on what the difference means though

It looks really good. What are you using as an aerial? I like the smooth look where it's missing.

They turns go through the hazard switch. I couldn't work out why mine weren't working for ages the first time I had my dash apart

Both installs look good. Is that Alcantara, Kamakaze? I also like your play buttons Stephen Lee, are they from a keyboard?

I'm mid-install at the moment. Got some wiring and fabricating to do to get it in the car again and then I'll be adding some secret projects to control the fans (It's an ST with no air con)

Slight thread ressurection but here's my 8's in a MDF enclosure.

It's not perfect. The volume is near perfect (Most 8's need 0.3 cubic feet) but the joins aren't great and the subs cost £15 delivered off ebay. I'l start saving for JBL's soon

Awesome! I'm not great with FG and wanted to keep the rear looking stock if possible, but it's good to know how much room there is to play with!

Welcome Rob!

Car looks clean, go for Scion t.c rims they'd look great on your black car!

Check my profile to see them on my celica.

You can find them with tires for arond $500 or less.

I'll go have a look now!

Nice car! Loving the graphics - did you get that done or was it already applied when you got the car?

It was already there and I'm in two minds whether to pull it off or not. It hides the bottom curve up too much for me

If i was getting new wheels now, i'd get these:

*drool*

But that's just me.

Hmm... they're nice, but I was thinking of a blue LED/lighting theme on the inside. I could go red though.

Still, not like I can afford those until I graduate frown.gif

Thanks for the welcome!

I understand that there's lots on the site. I don't really want to be spoon fed either.

I've already seen the walk-through for changing the rear speakers. My plan is to replace the current speaker mounts with some MDF and build a box on to that. For the subs I only need 0.3cu ft so a 6.5" deep box is fine.

Hi everybody!

I'm a new member here from the UK and just got a 98 Gen 6 biggrin.gif It came completely stock as it's only an ST with no spoiler or alloys

I've bought a spoiler for it off ebay, but it looks different to most as it has a third brake light and no central support. tbh it reminds me of a MR2 spoiler, but it lines up and no doubt will fit fine.

I'm also thinking about alloys but don't know what to get. Possibly something with dual spokes like this but possiby in a different colour. Any opinions on that? It is a black Celica though, so I'm not sure on colour

Final question. Has anybody fitted 8" subs in the rear speaker pods? The RE8's, JBL GTO804's and Alpine's all fit and would have enough space without modifying the trim. A few pics of how you did it would be nice although I roughly have an idea of what to do.

Obligatory pic of car:

Hey all! I'm new here so I thought I'd start off by putting some pics of my Celica in

Yes I'm in the UK and no the car doesn't have a spoiler. Well it does since I got one off ebay a couple of weeks ago, but still deciding whether to fit it or not. I also need to get some alloys
