You don't have to go to a shop to hit the pully, if you can buy a chain wrench you will be able to tighten it enough buy hand with a 1/2 inch breaker bar. Put a cloth around the pully( so the chain wont damage it) and give it a good tighten it will be good. Anyways like the op said just start from scratch I don't like air guns a whole lot. |

I used to have starting problems it was my temp sensor was cracked(it looked ok) and would not give a signal or proper signal to engine . I have a 97 it was on the right of the two sensors where the top radiator hose meets the engine. Since I replaced it it has started for 2 years. |

I don't remember what plugs exactly but Iridium plugs which I think the sticker recommended, I finally tried them and I can feel the extra power and get 31 mpg on hwy again. Find a rebate , Oreilys had a rebate and I bought them. Had to check it states platinum plug and do not change gaps. Anyways I am sold on the Iridium plugs for the 4 cyl. Not going for it on R Rover or L98. |

When it doesn't start does the car still have power? If so does it try to turn over or does only the relay click if that? It could be during the engine swap some grounds were forgotten or not tightened all the way. Change the coolant tem sensor it gets corroded on the inside and you cannot see it. It is the right one from where the top hose goes to the engine. Mine was cracked after replace($15( no probs for years starting). good luck FYI the left one is for your guage inside |

It's a thermostat issue. It isn't opening fully or maybe it's stuck slightly open. Either way, it's letting some coolant flow through the radiator, enough to keep the engine cool under lower loads, but at higher loads the coolant starts to get too warm since it's not able to flow freely through the radiator. This is why I'll inky use OEM Toyota thermostats. Ya sounds like thermo is worth a try I will try that first. Thx for tips |

That or another way of testing would be to just check the compression in each cylinder. May not show up on a compression check. I wish I had saved the picture. It was the a very small piece of gasket missing from cylinder two to the front coolant passage opening. I had good cold and hot compression, but when I got on the gas it was overheating slowly but steadily. The test is cheap and so is the head gasket, but labor rates make everything expensive. I was wondering about that I don't even know when it started. I will bring it in for the test or buy a test kit anyways does anyone think head gasket seal could be something to try, I have never used it for anything. |

I am thinking that an open thermostat would just keep the car at 130 degrees that is what happened last time when I changed it. Now stuck closed mabey, but I was hoping someone has solved this problem before. Thx |

Hi there My Celica has been running great and I went on a trip(75mph) to find my fans were not kicking on and my temp was rising above middle to the top of thermometer. Pretty much had to drive 55 all the rest of the way with heater on). I have searched and read many topics but none seem solved. Idling and in town no problems. Had seen bad fan switch( not the prob new) in fact it isn't hot enough to get the fans on. Unplug fan switch to see fans run(did and they run) Blown head gasket (tailpipe is not smoking at all, oil is fine) Bad thermostat (did replace once before) Bad water pump (I did not replace, don't know how old it is) car has 200000 Tilted car air out/ new anti freeze New radiator (6months old) new cap I am warming it up to watch it and see if it does anything but it doesn't get too warm just sitting there. The gauge goes to the middle at idle. has anyone solved this problem or what should I do next funds are avail for the Celica Thx in advance Edited |

Does it happen on acceleration as well as braking? I had this caused by worn out LCA bushings and it was a pain in the ass to find. Something you could easily rule out. No man just under braking. I can feel the pads moving by pushing it with my handm there is a lot of play in my calipers, forcing them to move I can replicate the exact sound. Mabey your wire springs came out they hold the pads from moving and rattling. |

97 Toyota Celica Convertible. Top works great and it runs and drives great. Needs some work as the check engine light will come on and go off. It does have a small puff of oil upon startup after it sits a long time. It does not burn oil or leak anything. Tags will expire in Oct. 2013. It has sprint lowering springs on the front and I have the rear ones for it. AC works great, also have the original springs and a timing belt kit to go with. Clutch, Tires, struts, brakes, battery, radiator, many things are newly replaced. Viper security system. Needs some bodywork done. This would make a wonderful school car or shopper. $2600. Please see pics and Happy Bidding! |
