I just couldn't help myself, I needed to be able row through gears again; needed a project, something to do, something to cruise with w/ friends in the summer.
Somebody had posted a car on here it was a clean southern car that sale didn't happen & it just got me hooked, I needed to get back in another Celica.
I had been searching the car sales sites & found this on Jan. 18 on Craigslist in Denver, CO (had only been on there for a few days). Contacted the seller, blah, blah, blah. Flew out Feb. 3rd to pick it up. It's mine. BIG thanks to richee3 (a.k.a. Daniel) otherwise I would still be without a 6th gen.
Had an absolute blast. Beat the crap out of the car the first few hours of ownership, drove to Colorado Springs, up Pikes Peak (it's a must for any automotive enthusiast). Car rides well, even a 100mph (Denver area Colorado drivers are the worst).
So the cooling issue... Bought the car on Saturday no problems at all, really nice outside about 57degrees. Drove down to Colorado Springs then up & down Pikes Peak no issues. You can hear the fans come on when the car is at operating temp. I mean NO issues at all, we beat the piss out of the car (is smooth at 100mph). I leave Sunday morning, about 30min outside of Denver the car overheats! WTF! I pull over & check, see that the only place coolant is coming out of is the overflow tank, but the fans aren't running, weird. Check fuses, good, swap some relays, nothing. Eventually Daniel tells me unplug the radiator temp sensor, all is good, fans work, so relays are ok. Put some coolant in (not very much was lost) & on my way. I notice that the car is running a little warm but I keep going. Fill up w/ gas at Julesburg, CO get back on the road & the car seems to run a little warmer even than before, WTF. So I'm messing w/ the heater trying different things to get the temp down, I notice that when heat is turned to full cold that the temp gauge spikes, it didn't do that before. I suspect the thermostat. I get to North Platte, NE. Pull into an O'Reillys, pop over the hood and look, no leaks, but the lower radiator hose is cold! Put a new thermostat in bleed the system. Plug the fans back in & they turn on correctly, lower radiator hose gets hot. Ok cool, I get on my way temp gauge is good going down there the road. A while down the road I pull into a rest stop to check... no leaks, temp is good, but the lower radiator hose is still cold! WTF! I'm like well car hasn't blow up yet, I continue with my journey. I get home park in the garage, pop the hood lower hose still cold. I let the car run for a few minutes & the hose gets warm & the fans kick on. [Copied from our PM cheela, lol]
The car hasn't overheated yet so I'm believing the thermostat was the fix but...
Now the clutch is toasted, go figure. I've been baby-ing it when driving cause especially after 3k rpms you could feel it. But I was driving it to work 2 weeks ago on a Wednesday morning in lovely traffic, go to give it some throttle (maybe a 1/2, I dunno) in 5th & she shoots to 5k rpms & really goes no where, lol, sorry traffic. That smell is really nasty, haha.

It's going no where very, very fast. Mostly have no motivation after work during the week & weekends have been to cold to go & work in the garage.

Made a junkyard run... Got a full set of floor mats, black carpet, interior trunk plastics & a few other misc. pieces. And it only cost me $42!
Took the carpet & mats to the car wash & gave them good cleaning!
Like a week later went back & got some 7th gen seats & some other interior carpet bits for only like $50!
Not the biggest fan of the feel/ design of the 7th gen seats butt they sure are better then the faded/dry/ torn tan leather ones. They will do for now.

Did some work on Sunday. Started taking the interior apart. Had ordered new speakers & when taking the speaker panels out on the right side found some previous damage. Looks like it was repaired well?
Started putting the speakers in at work because that's where all my tools are. I was really hoping that it would be easier, like bolt in easy but stuff like that never happens.
Tried to take the least amount of material off, speakers don't seem to be to much heavier than the stockers. Still need to finish them up.

So I finally got the factory alarm key fob programmed. Thanks to cheela / richee3.
The little "piezo chirper" sounds like a dying rabbit but the alarm/ keyless entry works now. And now I can put the horn fuse back in & I can have a horn & not worry about that going off w/ the alarm.
Clutch is going in this weekend, hell or high water, it'll happen.
So the alarm works perfectly fine now?
Yep! Turned off the "Passive" mode or whatever it is called. I can leave the door open & it doesn't go bat **** crazy.

I'm liking that it's fairly rust free underneath.
Found some previous accident damage, oh well...
Got the clutch done (replaced the flywheel also). I really don't want to EVER do that again. Took way longer than what I thought it was going to (basically a 2 day project). Tried to clean stuff up, years of engine oil & clutch dust. Ended up putting in 2 new axles seals & a starter (someone had over tightened the nut that holds the power wire to the starter & when I went to go take it off the stud that goes into the starter broke inside the starter case, it was a reman unit) & of course the reman unit sounds like **** & seems like it grinds. Got to find a higher quality one or used OE from the junkyard.
I'm believing that the clutch might have been the OG w/ ~ 169,320miles because it had AISIN stamped on it, but whatevs.
Those hotspots on the flywheel though. FWIW Aisin makes o.e. replacement clutches for certain applications, but that one definitely looks all of 169,000 miles.
Yeah, I put an Aisin one back in. Super happy I didn't have to adjust the clutch pedal at all.
Now you get to break the clutch in, exciting.

Chris, that starter works wonderfully. Cleaned it up a little w/ a wire wheel & installed that last Friday during lunch. Much better than that loud piece of chit I got from Hoe'Riellys.

And yesterday I went to the car wash & power washed the carpet & other floor mats.
I want to get the carpet in this weekend since it will be "somewhat" cooler.
Not sure the best way to clean those black leather seats. Some parts of the seats are pretty dry & hard. Just might spray them off & rub them down w/ something.
We'll see what happens.
Interior cleaner and a Magic Eraser works wonders to clean leather seats, but you have to be careful so you don’t end up pulling the dye out of the seat. As for softening it, I’ve heard Vaseline will do the job but I don’t have any experience with that so further research is needed.

For the love of all that is holy don't use petroleum on leather, Meguiar's Gold Class leather cleaner and conditioner works really well.

It's kinda hard to tell on video, but it's a night and day difference. Some at the Midwest Meet 18' heard the crap starter. (Did that around June 29th.)
Got the 7th gen seat swapped over to the 6th gen, looks pretty decent, feels good... (Did that on July 8th.)
Cleaned the back seats & pass. side front seat. I just used some warm water w/ dish soap & tried that MrClean MagicEraser. That combo worked well since the seats got a little red spray paint over-spray from a house project I did.
Put the back seat in... (Did that July 24th.)
And the pass. front seat...
Now I can have passengers, lol. Was really spacious in there without the other seats.
Then I decided to have a place (that I've used before & they did great work) detail the car. They did a wax & polish then interior, turned out decent for a turd.
Did bring some shine back to some of the hatch & roof that was faded.
Anywho...
A list of current things I need to fix/ address are..
- Oil pan is leaking (previous ****ty RTV job)
- One axle seal (apparently I did something to fudge up the new one putting it in)
- The car has a slight rpm fluctuation at idle (vacuum related? or IAC?, I dunno)
- PCV hose & valve cover to intake hose (brittle & torn)
- Especially above 3k rpm, car seems harsh (like a vibration, could be the front & rear mounts that had slight tears in them(noticed when change the clutch), or the cheap Nittos that are on the car) I don't recall this vibration when I bought the car, maybe it happened after the clutch change, maybe its in my head, I dunno.
That's about what my mind can publish tonight.

HOW COME MY THIRD BRAKE LIGHT IS A 1156 STYLE BULB AND NOT A 921 LIKE DATABASES SAY IT IS?
Does it look like the wiring and housing has been modified? It's been years but I want to say my third brake light used 194/921 style bulbs.
Mine is definitely an 1156. Databases don’t think it be like it do, but it do.

On page 186 of the owners manual, it says the "High mounted stoplight" is a 921 BUT designates it as a "C, Single end bulbs".
But a 921 is "D, Wedge base bulbs".
BUT Its a 1156! Aaaaaggggghhhhhh!
I think I did the same thing several years ago. Bought 924 LED’s per a lighting guide I found online (maybe even here on the forum) but when they came in and I went to replace the bulb, I found it was an 1156 and I had to order different bulbs. Then I found that there’s an issue in my wiring after the paint job and I’ve never bothered to track it down, so I just don’t have a third brake light. Who needs safety equipment, amirite?
And you have never been pulled over for it. My luck I would have been.
I did order some LEDs yesterday, some interior & other misc. bulbs.
Also ordered a new fob case & new remote (as an extra).
So we'll see how all that goes.

Maybe '94-95 is 921 but '96-99 is 1156 for some reason? Wouldn't be the first time something small like that was changed within a generation of a car and then never properly documented. I want to swear mine were 921 in the third light because I replaced all the bulbs on my Celica at one point so then I'd know they were all fresh.
they are different on my 94 it has one type and on my 97 the other.
You inspired me to fix my 3rd brake light. Haven’t seen it lit up in years. Definitely took an 1156 bulb for my ‘98. Interesting that Toyota would change that when so much of the car stayed the same through the years.

yes, you're right. The 3s is going in his truck and the 5.9 Cummins into the celi.
Actually Cummins has a crate engine program. Expensive but worth it.
Do an LS4 swap and call it a day.
So back on October 6th w/ about 171,114miles;
I changed the oil, resealed the oil pan (hoping that solves a leak I was getting) & re-did an axle seal on the passenger side (must have installed the last one crooked or something when I did the clutch).
The whole project took way to long, most of the day in fact.

I have yet to do a good verification if said work fixed the leaks but whatevers. Sorry, not sorry on the procrastination.

Been about a month for me. Had a wet few days so hopefully it washed the salt off the roads. So I couldn't resist... feels good.
So... I drove the Celica today, first time since like early February. Of course the battery was dead, so I put the trickle on for a minute & it fired right up.
Was also nice not to have any leaks on the garage floor. Hopefully it stays that way.

A little late but...
A fellow member on here had some JDM tails for sale, so I picked them up. I was a little hesitant but in person they look great & they bring the car up to date, like from a mid-90s Toyota to an early 2000s Toyota. I also like more of the amber turn signal. Here is a question what have yous done with the extra bulb socket from the USDM harness so it doesn't get water/ short out? Was just thinking of cutting the socket off & heat shrinking to prevent anything bad happening.

Added an LED 3 brake light bulb...
I had also pick up some yellow fog light bulbs & installed them in some new/ used non-broken housings. No pics but yellow fogs equals all the coolness.
Last year when I put the new clutch in I had left off the splash shields because there was some leaks I knew I want to fix. Now that those are taken care of (I hope), I FINALLY put them back on & now have all the aerodynamics.

If you're concerned about water I'd just use a balloon over the socket and cable tie it into place, that way not having to cut into wiring and having to seal those off individually.

On Wednesday the 10th I put some LED bulbs in the map/ dome light & in the hatch. Literally a night & day difference, especially for the map/ dome.
Also put in a brighter LED for the ash tray, which also helps out a lot.

Actually did stuffs to the car last weekend and this weekend. I would post a true update but I don't want to break the forum.

So back on May 2nd (2020 in case thats not clear) got the urge to do something about that nasty tan door card fabric (w/ moms help of course)...
Its not perfect or professional but it works
Then on May 9th I decided to change the oil (had 174,651miles), since the last I did it was October 2018 when I resealed the oil pan. AND its not leaking! While there I adjusted the E-brake & rotated the tires (found one rim was slightly bent, but I'm just gonna send it).
The old turd cleans up well...
Yesterday went out for a cruise w/ a friend that I havent seen face to face in 4+ months thanks to "self-quarantine/ stay at home orders" & COVID-19 BULL$HIT.
We did not break any speed limits but lets just say I blew the cob-webs out & there now should be less carbon build-up on engine componets.
Anette can make you matching visors! I can't think of anything more Nebraska than plaid flannel door fabrics.
Probably going to try & find a grey headliner & visors. I have grey rearview mirror & sunroof switch/ map light from the junkyard. Not sure how plaid I wanna go.

I prefer the 6gc seats over 7th gen. But the 7th gens were really cheap & in decent condition. I don't like leather seats because obvious reasons & these are so dry they don't hold you in place. That why I have a 7th gen cloth for the driver's side.

Loving that interior ,next head liner . I did mine with the ''BRIDe" pattern and the visors matching but with the mirror side in a solid color and sunroof cover in solid. I like what you did ,is different.

So here's what happened on the trip home...
After Jordan (Thank You sir!) took me to the O'Reilly's warehouse in Naperville & then all the way back to Ottawa, installed the ignition coil & ignition control module. Started up good & revved fine, sounded like a car.
Started the trip home & 6-7 min down the interstate (about 1/2 way to Peru) it started acting up again! WTF! I was going about 77mph. Awhile down the road there was some construction so I slowed down to about 67 mph. The issue is barely noticeable at that speed, so I continued at that speed until Davenport were the issue starts to show itself again. If it gets bad enough the CEL will flash while it's happening but won't stay on.
So I drive to the big I-80 truck stop to fill up with gas. I idle at the pump for a minute & it hickups but it catches itself, continue to idle for not even maybe another minutes & it dies. So I Thought to myself, put some premium (along with a can of fuel system cleaner) in there what can it hurt. I let it cool off for about a hour. Get back on the interstate & I can still feel the surging/ bucking/ whatever the issue is. Its still doing it so I pull of the interstate at Grinnell, IA.
I let it cool down a few minutes. Well I got some brake clean maybe it's a vacuum leak, start car spray around vacuum hoses & stuff, nothing. Turn car off & I let the car sit maybe a total of 45min-1 hour. Well Imma just going to send it the rest of the way home. I get back on the interstate thinking to myself just go 65mph like you were before & the issue was barely noticeable/ non-existent. So I go about 65mph all the way to Council Bluffs, about 15min from home & no issues! Maybe the premium fuel & fuel system cleaner worked! INTERESTING! Well since I'm 15min from home, let's do a test. I tip into the throttle, not full throttle but maybe 3/4 & started doing it again! Let off to coast, tip into the throttle same damn thing. NOW it's doing it again! Flashing CEL when it gets bad. Go home pull into the garage idles decent. Turn car off.
I currently have to stop typing & get to work, I probably forgot a detail & will have to add more.
My pride is wounded that I guessed wrong and it cost you money. If you need to check hot parts resistance you can hear the oven to about 210, put parts in,btien it off, and let them heat soak for about 15 minutes then check hot resistance. It's possible it's not an ignition issue, but usually when a fuel pump fails it just stays bad. I'm glad you made it home safely though. Feel free to text me any questions if you want.
Should have just drove to your shop and took a week off work to fix it, lol.

Have we considered a clogged up fuel filter? Maybe it takes time to pull the gunk up from the bottom of the filter before it starts to effect driveability....

I did purchase one but didn't install it because they kinda a cunt to do. Its for a '99 Camry which is a little bigger in dimensions (bigger is better right? lol), see if it fits good enough or not at all.

In other news...
Saturday car started up fine & drove to the shop. I got the fuel filter in. A Camry filter works but just buy the correct filter to start with. The Camry one is larger in diameter & doesn't fit the Celica bracket, maybe a Camry bracket might be made to work in a Celica... I dunno.
I'm not sure if the fuel filter solved the issue because it's only like a 10 drive back home from work. I did accelerate a few times aggressively and it seemed ok.
But...
I didn't beat on it to hard/ take it out for a long drive because I discovered a coolant leak whilst in the engine bay! FLUCKING CAR! * insert super angry emoji *
Luckily it seems to be coming from the thermostat/ thermo housing neck, so should be an easy fix. Needed to do a coolant flush anyway.
In more news... I did record my best mpg (in a Celica) while this whole issue started happening, 30mpg!! Im sure outside temperature & vehicle speed is a major factor. I can lay out more details if someone is interested.
But plan as of now is to fix coolant leak & do a flush. Then drive for a long period of time to see if the issue returns.
Oh, one more thing... Found out the car is Federal Emissions. According to the ECU part# 89661-2G281
But the underhood sticker and 2 cats say it's California. Do you...have the wrong computer? Call a Toyota dealer and have them pull the ECM part number by VIN.

I will agree with that statement.
For some reason I’m thinking they were all Cali spec in ‘99. The most noteworthy difference to my memory was one cat vs two so that would be a good indicator. The fact that you said you got record gas mileage sticks out to me. Whatever you have going on is likely causing a lean condition instead of a rich condition. Typically if the ECU thinks something is wrong it will dump fuel so this makes me think either you have an O2 sensor that could be failing sending the wrong signal to the ECU or something mechanical. Since it’s after the engine warms up, I’m not thinking it’s something mechanical.

Especially since I drove it from Grinnell, IA to Council Bluffs, IA at 65mph with no real issues. Then I decided to give it throttle to accelerate to 80mph & it started acting up, even when I coasted back down to 65mph, until I got home & shut it off (maybe 15min later).
Have to go drive around this week and see if it acts up still. Fuel filter would be weird but not unheard of. Might want to pull the sending unit up and check/replace the pre filter "sock" on the bottom of the pump too. Could even be a failing pump I suppose. Kind of a pain to get a fuel pressure gauge on these to drive around with but it can be done mostly safely.

Speed plays a huge role in MPG. I bet you'd see over 32 at 55 MPH.

Do people like to use that radiator flush or just use a garden hose to flush the cooling system?
I was thinking...
- Take out thermostat
- Put the neck back on without thermostat
- Use some radiator flush & water, bleed the system & drive around the neighborhood
- Come back, take hoses off, flush with water via the garden hose
- Install new thermostat & neck, & bleed the system with the correct coolant
- That part of the job is done
Then after the cooling system is good, I can drive it long enough to see if my "surging/ misfire" issue returns.
Didn't have any issues with heat so, I won't use the "flush". I have 2 of those fancy bleed funnels, they definitely make the job nicer. Thanks!

Okay.... So... Issue returns!!
I was bleeding the cooling system, had hand on the throttle to hurry it along... Fans come on & a few seconds later the car starts stumbling & dies. Interesting. Wait less than 30 seconds, starts right up no issues. Hand on throttle to get rpms back up, fans come on... and a few seconds later car stumbles & dies. No CEL.
????
So I had restarted if after letting it cool down for a few minutes... Started right back up, held throttle, fans kick on, few seconds later car stumbles again but only died after I let go of throttle.
Again let it cool for a minute or two & just let the car idle all by itself until the fans come on. Fans come on, & few seconds after car dies. It could have stumbled but since it was at idle it just died.

So it's for sure a hot issue. What we need to know is what you're not getting when it stalls or doesn't restart, but being able to duplicate the problem in the driveway is MUCH better than being on the side of the road somewhere. You're going to want 2 noid lights, a spark tester, and a multimeter handy so you can test things while it's failing when hot. Probe one noid light into the 2 wire connector to the ignition coil, the other noid light into a fuel injector, spark tester on a plug wire, and the multi-meter ready to measure resistance of the cam sensor in the distributor as well as the new ignition coil. It would be a good idea to get a fuel pressure gauge on the engine as well just to make sure it's not a pressure issue from a pump failing when hot. Not sure where's good to hook up to on the 5S.

You can make due with one noid light as long as you're quick to re-probe things while it's acting up or don't mind making it act up multiple times, for me though time is money so getting it all looked at in one go is worth the price.
So since the 4 year old O'Reilly's special radiator cap fell apart when I removed it yesterday I went & got a new one from AutoZone, looks like a Gates brand one.
Anyways... Went through the process again. Fans come on, the first time it starts to stumble but not enough to make it die, fans come on a second time & stumbles bad enough that it died after I let off the throttle. It was on the 3rd or 4th time of stumbling that it stumbled bad enough to start flashing the CEL!! So I quickly used my little scanner to read it & it comes up with a: P0335 - Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit. The car died & wouldn't restart.
I'm just more excited that I was able to get a CEL outta the damn thing.
It's very possible it's a bad CKP, having a code can really cut down on fumbling around to find the problem! I'm still not clear if that ECM times ignition/fuel from the crankshaft or camshaft, the service info I have is a little vague but I think it uses the CMP for telling it when the #1 TDC is to know when the revolution starts and the CKP for measuring engine speed and position between CMP signals. Diagnostics want you to use a scope to look at the sensor waveform and compare to the expected signal from the FSM, you can kind of shortcut that by just checking it's got power and ground and then guessing and replacing it as a maybe if it's not terribly expensive. It is behind the timing belt tho....so you might be doing a timing belt job with that sensor if it is the sensor. However, some cars are kind of stupid and will set a crankshaft sensor code for a bad camshaft sensor, but I don't believe that Toyota is one of the especially stupid ones.
G is the camshaft and NE is the crankshaft.
So driving it to work so I could work on it... Maybe it's a good it's getting worse, because I made it half way & it did it again I had to pull over because it couldn't make it. Currently letting it cool down, lucky it's not to much farther to work.
That didn't do to plan. Had to let it cool down for 2ish hours on the side of the road to drive it to the shop. I wasn't stuck on the the side of the road, went & did other things came back & made it to the shop.
Had lunch & a drink or "two" with a few friends. Had a great time. Much needed to say the least.
Basically wasn't able to work on the car. Maybe at a later date.
The more broken it gets the easier to find the problem will be and the more confident you can be in your repair.

New crank sensor installed, all without taking the timing cover off. Ran until the fans came on a few times with high RPMs & at idle a few times no hesitation/ surging!

On Friday I had to replace the right side washer nozzle because the barb the the hose pushes onto had turned to crumbly bits. Also blew out the left side. Both nozzles work good now.
The driver's door was really squeaky when opening/ closing it, so I sprayed it down.
Sounds stupid but I washed/ cleaned/ took steel wool to the car key. It was pretty discussing & that's one thing I didn't clean when I bought the car.
Going back to the major issue I had...
I swear I still can feel some kind of RPM fluctuation while driving, although its not to noticable. And a few times since I've put the crank sensor in it's had an extended crank but fires right up. Not to worried about it as long as the car don't let me down on a road trip, LOL.
Needs new muffler bearings.

Really wanted to drive the Celica the past few days but the roads are still covered in salt & potholes. Even tho the car isn't perfect would still like to keep it clean. Maybe I'm using that as a excuse, LOL.
Same man, same. We keep having a few scattered 50 or 60 degree days but they're bracketed by rain/snow/freezing temps so everything is salted so bad it's like driving around on gravel roads in some places.

Almost warm enough here, 40 degrees. Roads however are so salted much that my Mazda can do burnouts from stop signs on the powdered road salt.
Don't do it, the salt be too much. We're about to jump back up to 40's for two days then drop again in MN. Snow and ice is still there.

Well it is parked next to my truck that's a rusty POS.
Bed sides over the wheels and the cab rocker panels? How they constructed those flares over the wheels on the bed is just ludicrously stupid, the layers of steel are almost built to rust out. I've seen some people drill big holes into them and paint the insides but leave the holes open so they can drain out and get washed out regularly.
Rocker panels are the worst. Bed is in ok shape.
For as much and as often as rocker panels rot on cars you'd think we'd have advanced to the point that they'd be bolt on or plastic.
I'll be interesting on all these aluminum cars in a few years.
So... Had a P0115 (Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit) pop up, So that's just dandy.
At least for now I have another POS to drive.
Finally got around to fixing the Celica. Ended up being the coolant temp. sensor for the ECU. Unplugged it & ECU read -40°, then jumped the connector & it read 284,°. Also put an ohm meter on the old sensor & nothing.
I swear this is the sweet spot year for cars. Most of the time super simple to diagnose.
Also tightened up the cruise control cable. It would accel & decel like maybe 4mph from set speed. Hope that fixes it & I didn't f*ck it up.
I think that's all for now.
Hell yeah, I hope that's it. Gotta get back out this way to see the Bison over at Buffalo Rock across the river.
Oh... forgot to mention... It looked like the sensor had been replaced before. As 2 of the locating tabs were ground off to fit the connector. The locking tab (south) & the one exact opposite (north) were ok but the (east & west) tabs were ground off.
Not sure what might be the exact issue with the cruise control... but after adjusting the cable, setting cruise it will accelerate 5mph past, then slowly decel & keep a few mph above set speed. And it seems the few times I used the decel on the cruise stalk it wanted to accelerate! I only tried cruise a few times so not sure exactly what's happening. I might try & take a video, will probably make more sense there.

The cable adjustment is probably just donked up.
Service info just says less than 10mm free play, so shoot for 5mm free play on the cable adjustment for that and see how it does. There's a list of symptoms and possible causes but I'm not sure any of those would be helpful.
