So I was removing my steering knuckle and I had to rotate the strut (still bolted up on top) and it makes this loud rubber? rubbing like noise.. is this normal? seems to be the same on the other side as well.

I'm just trying to fix up my 94 GT to be road worthy again. It need a clutch, replacement steering knuckle, and I think the front main seal is leaking pretty bad.

From spinning it? It should turn, not always easily, but it should rotate. There are tabs on the mount that attach to the strut rod at the top with allow it to rotate as an assembly. You could be hearing the seal on the rod.

Are they cartridges, or OEM?

Best guess: spring twisted in the spring seat when you turned the strut. The rubber squeal you hear is the spring seat insulator compressing between the spring and the spring seat. Double check that the upper spring seat is correctly aligned to the strut, and that the spring is aligned to the spring seats.

This is what I mean.. this is from just rotating.. does this on both my fronts... just wondering if its normal? ..since it doesn't do this on my 5th gen I don't think.

Unfortunately you tended to drop the aim of the camera whenever you turned the strut, so I couldn't clearly what the spring and boot were doing. Looked like the spring was turning with the strut when you twisted the bolt holes to the right, no idea what it was doing as you turned to the left.

I'd still guess at the spring twisting against the top spring seat. There's a lot more compression on the front springs, even with the wheels off of the ground, than on the rear. If you're lucky, the spring is twisting the spring seat insulator. If you're unlucky, the spring seat is twisting against the strut mount because the keyed opening which holds the shaft has rounded out.

Yeah sorry trying to do it with one hand and enough torque to turn the strut body and trying to hold the camera is hard.

Its probably not a big deal so I'm just going to leave it and just change out my wheel bearing and well if I hear it afterwards then I'll take it apart.

It sounds like the rubber in the strut mount that goes on top of the strut and bolts up to the underside of the strut tower. I just changed my struts last week and mine were making the same noise as I was undoing the strut top nuts and the strut was rotating slightly. As long as there aren't chunks of the rubber coming out of the top mount you should be fine.
