From my understanding more old ladies drive Celicas than Corvettes. Who cares though. I enjoy driving the Celica too, until a minivan flies by you. If the car was in Prelude and Type R territory power wise I'd keep it. That's really my only issue with the car. Makes you wonder what the Hell Toyota was thinking at times. They had the BEAMS, shame they never brought it over stateside. True that. Auto manufacturers often times make decisions and we the public just scratch out heads, but all in all its based more on consumer demand and market appeal. The lower the hp on a motor, the more gas friendly it is - so the theory goes anyways. |

It was working for Honda. I guess a majority of it had to do with meeting U.S. emissions requirements.
A more powerful engine doing less work is more efficient than a weaker engine doing more work. Why many people with the LS1 with a M6 frequently report close to 30 mpg on the highway. -------------------- 2001 Miata LS 5-speed

i tho i lost interest in my celica cuz i had my datsun 240z on the side but you know what i put falken aziens 205/50/15 on the stock rims the car handles completely different. and if you havent over steered in the celica at least once yet then you havent actually pushed it hard enough. yes i was shocked my first time. and believe it or not i had an alltrac and a 7th gen gts in front of my hands for cheaper than this 6 gen celica god knows why i picked the 99 6 gen celica. i went to buy it the guy asked too much i left 9 month later he still had it i went and bought it i fell in love with drive feeling about the car everyone here is correct this car has a certain driving feeling to it compared to any other car ive driven and i driven many cars i used to work as a vallet driver in california in wealthy areas like muholland drive malibu winery area i used to joy ride cars down the canyon and up trust me the celica is 1 of those cars that you will miss. go drive someone else's car has to be manual transmission (i call this the stranger) people think i call it the stranger cuz your driving someone elses car, nope as soon as you hop back in the celica you will feel very strange with the clutch and driving feeling of the car. until you can actually drive 100 different cars and then hop in the celica at instant and drive it normally like you always do without feeling weird then you have actually enjoyed the feeling of the car before thats how i put it. thats my reason for actually keeping my POS celica that only produces like 130hp 2.2 and leaks all over the freakin place and causes me issues and also doesnt save gas like you would think it does lol =] then again i go back in the car and i cant let it go. yes everyone i payed more for a 6 gen celica than a 7th gen or a 5th gen all trac. believe it.

Sure, that's like a three hundred pound man winning against a track sprinter in a race. Something went wrong with the sprinter. more like an experienced shooter hitting a target with no sights on his gun vs. an amateur who can't hit it with a sniper rifle.. Nothing went wrong with his car, I just know the limitations of my car and how to drive it while he did not. There's a guy on a miata forum who's signature quotes Michael Jordan (of Automobile magazine) saying "If you can't go fast with 90hp, 900 won't help you." example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kC4Y19CWCY -------------------- 94 GT - Sold -------- 69 Pontiac Lemans - Sold 88 Alltrac - Sold ---- 04 WRX - Sold 00 GT-S - Sold ------ 91 Miata - project/drift car 95 GT - Sold -------- 96 GT - New Daily Drive |

Regardless, it's not the car's fault. Michael Schumacher could make just about any car fast, just like some people could make any car slow. Just sad to see a Ferrari go to waste like that.

That's what my point was... If you think the celica is too slow maybe you just need to adjust the nut behind the wheel -------------------- 94 GT - Sold -------- 69 Pontiac Lemans - Sold 88 Alltrac - Sold ---- 04 WRX - Sold 00 GT-S - Sold ------ 91 Miata - project/drift car 95 GT - Sold -------- 96 GT - New Daily Drive |

It's mainly because the Celica is my first(and last) 4 cylinder car. I rather sacrifice some, if any, handling for straight line speed. Can only make a car go so fast in a straight line.

I can make a celica fast in a straight line a hell of a lot easier than I could make a mustang or camaro be fast around a corner... -------------------- 94 GT - Sold -------- 69 Pontiac Lemans - Sold 88 Alltrac - Sold ---- 04 WRX - Sold 00 GT-S - Sold ------ 91 Miata - project/drift car 95 GT - Sold -------- 96 GT - New Daily Drive |

I wast necessarily talking about a straight away. 5sfe is just not the right motor around the corner. At high end it lacks much the 5sfe works ok for auto cross with the nice gear ratios but at the track the high end it's all missing that's where the beams came in. And yes driver obviously makes a difference

Mustang perhaps, but the 4th gen Camaro/Firebird were quite capable in the handling department even stock. I felt safer taking a fast corner in my dad's stock Z28 than I do in my modified Celica. If stock suspension isn't enough there're companies like Eibach and Hotchkis to better refine it. Having experience with both vehicles I have to say good luck with that one. -------------------- 2001 Miata LS 5-speed

I'm sure your logic has deduced the fact that the Z28 is an actual "sports" car with better suspension stock whereas the Sporty Economy 6th gen Celica comes with monster truck style OEM springs so grannie's wig doesn't get knocked off on a simple speed bump. Define "my modified Celica" With just lowering a celica properly, I believe the Celica will win in that cornering battle. Springs cost 150 bucks, and you can pick up a good Celica for less than 4g's..shall we continue? Or are you going to deflect with another Willy Wonka meme? It's been lowered on Tein coil springs and has KYB GR2 struts. Everything was installed and set up at a Toyota dealership. Z28 being stock was still better. A factory sports car drives better than a modified economy car, who would've thought that was ever possible.
You can also get a good LT1 F-body for under $4,000 around here, so that point is invalid. Would also like to add it has new tires, and all of it was done within the last 5,000 miles. The Celica is a fine handling car, but it is what it is. I also am not big on FWD cars anyway, the Celica was gotten for saving gas and is the only reason I bought it. This thread needs to be retitled to "6gc vs. Box and/or V8 muscle cars." Enough of the pissing contest, everybody has their own opinions and each car has their pros and cons.
Plus I'll take you all on in my 350Z!!!!!!!! -------------------- "Employ your time in improving yourself by other men's writings, so that you shall gain easily what others labored hard for." -Socrates. Even Socrates told us to use the search button!

Didn't know this thread would turn into a V8 vs Celica thread......... Can't we just say that they're both good in their own right?

Bring it! I'll only race you in a straight line. My stock Z vs Miata in a corner... No chance. -------------------- "Employ your time in improving yourself by other men's writings, so that you shall gain easily what others labored hard for." -Socrates.
