Hey guys, new here, but I thought this would be the best place to seek out advice :P

My Celi right now is totally stock, but my father knows this guy who does powdercoating on race cars or somesuch, and he said he could do the rims on my car. I did a bit of research on powdercoating because I didn't know what it was for the most part at first, and I've seen mostly positive reviews. Does anyone have any real cons to it that will impact my car or its performance? Any experience, good or bad? Suggestions for any other exterior styling?

I'm looking to start making my Celi my own, and I wanted to get the rims done like a dark red. Yay or nay? The car is black, I have a photo of it uploaded on here. I shopped a couple of pictures of the shade I'm assuming the guy has, just to get some idea of what it might end up like with some color on it (kind of messy since I used a touch pad but whatever.) I was originally going to do gloss black but I feel like it would blend in with the rest of the car too much, and white looks like it'll be hard to keep clean-looking.

So, help me out?

It totally depends on your personal choice when it comes to painting in a certain color.

Powder coat is one of the best if not best option when it comes to wheels. If you like the price they ask, go for it. Those wheels don't look that hard to keep clean, but white is definitely hard compared to most.

It's just paint and the only way it will affect the car is by looks. If you think you are not going to change the rims and won't hate the color after some months of driving, go for it.

One more thing. You will have to take the tires off in order to powder coat the rims, so this will add some to the cost when you have to re-balance them.

Not a fan myself so I would say nay. Seems a bit intense for the size of the wheel, but thats just my opinion. I think wheels look best with a pretty neutral colour though.

As said above, it is completely personal preference and what your aim is for the car.

If you went ahead with it, I would like to see you further the red theme with some pin striping or other forms of details or highlights to tie it all together (as well as red seat covers, red stitch interior bits etc.)

its up to you!

at one point I was going to get turtle green rims! when I look back Im glad I never went that route.

Its not the worst looking setup.
Powder coating holds up very well to the elements.

edit:
oh and you are new!
Welcome!
There is a Celica meet in Reading, PA
in a couple weeks too!

Thanks all for the quick replies. I'm getting a good deal here and cost won't be an issue.

I agree with continuing the red and black theme elsewhere on the car. Especially on the interior, which right now is a rather unfortunate tan color :P Seat covers for sure; I had similarly planned on carrying it out with red underbody + interior LEDs, among other things. But pinstriping/etc, like on the exterior as decals? The Celica never quite struck me as a car that could rock stripes of any sort. Feels risky, y'know. But then again, I guess it would work out with the right design.

Also, a meeting in Reading? That's awfully close, I'd hate to miss it but I don't know if I would be able to make it :c I'd probably be able to attend meet-ups more so next year or later this one.

My rims are powdercoated, had them like that for a good couple of years now. No issues with them.

from memory they were primed, then a special zinc coating, then powdercoated.

Powder-coating, yes go with it. As far as colour goes that's up to you. I personally feel wheels should stay in the neutral colours. They're sort of like shoes, even though the colour of the shoes match the outfit if they're non-neutral in colour they will stand out. If you want the wheels to stand out and distract attention from the rest of the car then go with the red. If you want the wheels to compliment the car then consider a dark metallic gray perhaps.

The actual color going on the rims isn't going to be quite so bright; it was described to me as a dark red, like apparently the color of blood. I do want something that stands out, just not something so bright that it would burn to look at. I can understand the lean toward neutrals though, it would flow nicely. I just want something with a bit of contrast to it that will set the car apart.

Ah ok. A crimson or real deep red would would look nice then. Perhaps follow it up with some matching body accents to bring it together.
