I wasn't sure whether or not I should post this in "electrical" or this section..so I posted it here..it should fit more here I think.
So I have the adapter that I posted about here, which I have yet to post an update too since I had to redesign my adapter. And the adapter works, but I haven't wired it in fully, just connected the wire tips together. Anyway, I have been thinking about getting ST215 gauges and making them fit in the Celica. The only real reason for this is the individual coils I'm running. My Autronic SM4 computer can control the gauges, and I'm hoping that the gauges are similar enough between the two cars that the engine speed, gas gauge, and temp gauge would work. I've been thinking about getting motorcycle gauges and putting them in the car, but I would need to find some that have the same miles that my car has so I can pass my safety check. There is a nice set of gauges on ebay, and it also shows the back of them very clearly, clear enough for me to trace out the wires and try to mock up a rewire and ponder whether it will work or not. The only concerns are whether it will fit or not, and if the gas gauge will not only work, but be accurate. Also the speed sensor compatibility, and temp gauge. I know a guy that is running an autronic in his st215, I can ask him if the RPM signal wire worked with his gauges. The motorcycle gauges would take more of a rewire, but they would give me the option to put my other little 52mm gauges behind the steering wheel since the moto gauges are in such a small housing. Plenty of space, just more rewiring, and no gas gauge. Ebay gauges http://www.ebay.com/itm/JDM-Toyota-Caldina...11a&vxp=mtr So my only question is whether anyone has a gauge wiring diagram of the st215, or at least knows where I can look to find one. I have only one question : WHY???
I do not see any advantage using the ST215 comb meter. Your ST20X one display the same info : fuel level, coolant temp, RPM, speed. To me, you will be changing 4 quarters for 1 dollar. Not worth it. Sam |

Sam Well..I pasted the link to my other post because I mention in that post that I have a multi coil setup and aftermarket computer, and I didn't want to type it out and explain why again when I can paste the link. On multi coil set ups the Rpm signal comes from the ecu and the st215 is multi coil. On the celica the rpm signal comes from the igniter. My ecu doesn't provide the type of signal that comes from the igniter, it sends a pulse type that would be sent from a factory ecu on a multi coil setup. I could buy an adapter, but my temp gauge is off also and reads too high when cold even though I have changed the sensor. So even if I get an rpm adapter (which I have built) I would still have to fix the temp gauge. Plus the gauges are blue on that one. -------------------- -Jay

ok brah, the easy step for you is to get the tach, from the beams. it recognizes the signal from ECU.
those cool blue gauges, are in KM, you are in hawaii. if you need to pass inspection, your done.. unless you travel with a calculator and u can use it fast. most all of us beams swappers did this, the beams does not have igniter, but 4 coils.. Easy fix... now if you still want to do the 215 gauges, dont tell me i did not post an easy fix for you. -------------------- Learned a lot in 10 years... Yeah, the KM thing is an issue that I'm hoping I could explain myself out of. If not then I can just jump around between safety inspection sites until one passes it. -------------------- -Jay

speedo on st215 uses wheel speed sensors speedo on st20x uses gearbox speed sender signal different hmm..that might be ok, I'll have to wire my speed sensor into the ecu then and use that signal, thanks for the heads up! -------------------- -Jay

Hey NJCC,
When you swapped out the speed gauge was it just the face or the whole speed assembly? Does it fix the problem that Delusionz is talking about? -------------------- -Jay

the speedo if you see it, its the original celica speedo (black). I just fixed the tach. I have an s54 engine....
so if you keep the s54 or use the e153 from mr2, youll need the celica speedo. when i swap the tach and fuel gauges, both assemblies come out after a few screws. -------------------- Learned a lot in 10 years... I still don't understand why you want to do all this when all you need is a tach adaptor (like the one you tried to build in the other thread) and a new coolant sender unit. For the coolant sender unit, did you use the third wire in the ST215 coolant sensor connector? If so, then this is your problem. You need to use your ST20X 1-wire coolant temp sender. Simply drill and tap a hole into the ST215 water outlet and install the 1-wire coolant sender from your ST20X previous engine and feed the wire all the way to your coolant gauge. Your speedo should work if you are using the ST20X tranny/speed sensor.
Anyway, this is how I did it in my swap (ST184 to ST215) and all the gauges worked perfectly. Sam |

Sam The tach adapter that I made works, (the second revision that I mention in the other thread). And I mentioned earlier that it ISN'T the sending unit. It is the gauge. I put a NEW sending unit in for the previous engine and used an adapter so that it fit in the coolant neck. For me to pass the safety inspection I had to wire a resistor inline with the sending unit, that way the normal operating temp would be displayed. They didn't care about the RPM gauge not working. So I need a new gauge cluster anyway because I have one dead gauge and one gauge using an adapter to function. -------------------- -Jay

Sorry, I didn't understand it this way the first time, my mistake. Still, you can try to find a used ST20X gauge cluster and swap the coolant gauge only.

Sam I suppose I could do that, but there aren't many celicas in junkyards here, which leaves ebay. And the gauges on ebay are about half of the price that I've seen the beams ones. I don't mind waiting a bit to spend the extra and get the beams gauges with the white faces. -------------------- -Jay
