Hi guys,

I finally got my new baby, a 1994 GT in red, a few months ago and I've been slowly running through a full service. Engine temperature was always low (somewhere around 1/4 - 1/3 on the gauge) and it took at least 10 minutes to get to that level (maintains that level from that point onwards) so my guess was that the thermostat was stuck slightly open.

I looked at several different online parts companies and all recommended the same thermostat with a diameter of 64mm (even gives full dimensions here). I swapped the thermostat yesterday and, to my surprise, the old one was definitely bigger (~68mm) and the new one clearly doesn't fit snugly into the housing.

I did a trial fit, ran the engine for a while and, sure enough, there was a slow drip leak from the base of the housing (bolts were nice and tight).

My problem is that everywhere I look, they all say it's 64mm; I even tried searching for a later year in case they thought it was the rev 2, and for other car models with a rev 3 3S-GE, and every time they say it's 64mm.
Everyone seems to agree on the OEM part number being 90916-03100 (also given here and here).

Any ideas why everyone is trying to sell me the wrong part, and where I might find the right part? Thanks in advance.

Does the old thermostat have a number on it?

Unfortunately, no. The brand is Kuzeh (I Google'd this and it appears to be a licensed OEM) and stamped with 82 degrees C.

What kind of gasket was on the old one? What kind of gasket on the new one?

Is it possible you were measuring the tstat and gasket together? Combined they would be about 68mm. The gasket is a rubber ring that has a slit around it that slips onto the thermostat.




Both of those are showing the gasket installed on the thermostat.

Don't have part numbers for either (this was the new one). Both gaskets were the right size for each thermostat and both look this.
This was measuring just the thermostat without gasket. The new one + gasket doesn't fit snugly in the housing and, instead, freely spins with a small gap around the edges. The old one fitted snugly as in the photo.

buy genuine, make sure you order the gasket too as it isnt included with the thermostat

One thing I found odd is that the Miparts link says the OEM thermostat diameter is 64mm but, agreed, I'm going to buy a genuine thermostat + gasket. My biggest problem is that I'm having a lot of trouble tracking down the OEM parts.

I'm really curious as to why everywhere recommends a wrong part, though. I know a few are part of the same umbrella company but some aren't, so it's strange that they agree on the wrong value.

Most Toyota's use the same thermostat and gasket. The one in my 00 2ZZ-GE is the same as in the MZ V6's, AZ's, S's, A's, etc. I checked out the cross reference on the parts counter screen.

This is also confirms the OEM part numbers, which is good, but no measurements of the thermostat that I could see?

One thing I noticed when I had to deal with replacing my thermostat -- aside from discovering my very early 5SFE used a larger diametre thermostat than subsequent 5SFEs -- was that the aftermarket gaskets were thinner than the OEM gaskets. That might be the issue.

Care to give us a side-by-side image? For example, my engine's thermostat versus the later engine's thermostat (also used to illustrate the build quality differences between OEM and aftermarket)

Of course in working condition. I have changed it for TRD sports one when I bought a car.

My measurements were made with the gasket off so this was the raw thermostat diameter, and this is where I measured the ~4mm difference.

I spoke to my local Toyota dealer and ordered a replacement thermostat and gasket, due on Wednesday. £25 for thermostat and £4 for gasket so I was pleasantly surprised with those prices (I was expecting a huge markup!). The new thermostat is currently in there right now and I don't fancy losing any more coolant until I make the swap, but I'll definitely get a side-by-side comparison posted when I get the new thermostat.




I actually rang up my local Toyota dealer as soon as they opened this morning and, after I found out they were only £10 more expensive than the aftermarket one I bought, I decided to just go for it, but thanks for the offer
