So I recently bought a 1999 Celica GT off of CL in Los angeles. After replacing the oil pump and valve cover gaskets, it runs great. The seats are a little beat up and the trunk rattles, but all in all pretty good.
The only real issue is that the front left speaker does not work. It's all stock from what I can see. Also the button console on that door is really shaky. it looks like someone took it off and didnt know how to put it back on. any ideas on fixing or replacing the speaker? Pictures of it are on my profile. It looks fine cosmetically. Wiring or dead speaker? Anyone else have an issue like this before? thanks! |

Take the door cover off and unscrew the speaker. Hook it to your home amplifier and check it is working.
Does your left tweeter work? If it isn't maybe your HU is set to play only the RIGHT side, somebody was tinkering with the settings without knowing better. -------------------- |

As for the button console, it has hook on top side and metal clip on bottom, and by the looks of it, I'd say that the bottom is not clipped (just push it in so it clips), or the clip is missing.

sorry but what is a tweeter?
i took the door off and took the speaker out. Then i put a current tester through it and it measured no resistance, so im guessing it's the speaker. what is the HU? it also seems to be an 8 inch speaker. the guys all say it should be 6.5" but its also toyota branded on the back, leading me to believe it came stock. well, should i replace the one speaker? or buy two new ones? also, would there be any relatively inexpensive ones that would let me play more Bass? i love my EDM thank you for the answers guys, this is a really helpfull community. |

The tweeter is the little guy in the top of you door, it has the small circle grille that's about an inch. HU = Head Unit (or radio) The holder can accept an 8" speaker, but the one you have is only 6.5". The only time you would have a true 8" speaker is if you had the stock 8 speaker system in your car, which you don't. If you're going to replace it with an OEM one, then just replace one side. If you're going with aftermarket speakers, get a two speakers. sorry but what is a tweeter? i took the door off and took the speaker out. Like I said, unless you have the 8 speaker system, you'd have the true 8" speaker in the front. Everything else came with a 6.5" speaker that has a bracket to fit the 8" opening. |

You can look around on ebay or the web cause I know miata guys have the same problems and some VW's too |

Don't worry about the wattage. Just get cheap Sony or Kenwood speakers. Pairs can be had for under $60. While they're not the best sounding speakers out there by a mile, they'll likely sound better than what was in there. Or, pony up and get a pair of Infinity or Alpine speakers for under $100. They'll sound markedly better, but really need an external amp to reach their potential. |

why not worry about the wattage? If i get too much wattage on my speakers, won't it put too much of a strain on my head unit? thats what the bestbuy guy told me, but then two other people told me it won't hurt it, it just wont play at full potential
Also, does anyone know if this model comes with an amp? or what the stock output of the head unit is? It's a 1999 celica GT 6 speaker setup with no pocket under the stereo. I can't find manufacturer specifications anywhere! I'm trying to choose a new speaker and that information would be really valuable. |

Heck, my headunit can handle my Infinity and Alpine speakers no problem. |
