well i figured i would see if anyone else has had this problem. I figure its the struts or the strut mounts. When i hit bumps the rear end makes clunking sounds. When i pressed on the rear of the car it wont do it and the struts dont feel bouncy either. Also, one of the struts is leaking alittle so i know its due a replacement. I was just wondering if anyone elses made this type of noise and what exactly it was?

A couple things to check. On the top of the strut tower there is a 19mm compression nut atop the shock. Make sure this is tight. Mine was a bit loose and made a rattling/clunking noise. While you are there, check to make sure the three 12mm top hat anchors are good and tight as well. You can find all these nuts underneath the plastic pop-out in the trunk. you might have to fold the seats down and remove the two phillips screws to pull away the plastic panel so you can get to the nuts better.

The other thing you might want to check is the end-links. One end is bolted to the bottom of the strut housing and the other to the end of the rear sway bar. Make sure there isn't any play in that.

nope..all stock suspension. 153k miles on the car. I checked tightness of strut bolts and everything was fine. I guess im going to have to take the struts and mounts off to see if the struts are dead or the mounts are broke.

Just a quick check of your jack would be smart. Mine was lose and made noises like bad struts. Take it out and drive over some bumps to rule it out before spending any $$$.

also, on top of checking your jack...if you took out the spare recently or anything, the bolt that goes into the car gan get to close to the chassis, letting the tire move around, and giving a *clunking* sound.

Hopefully it is what happened to me cause it was cheap and easy. I had a BAD clunking sound and FINAlly traced it to my rear sway bar bushings. The car was up on a lift and i grabbed the sway bar and I was able to move it easily. I got the parts for i think aroung 8 bucks, and it took me 10 minutes total to swap them out. BINGO!!! I have H&r's and GR-2's, so i thought it was becaeuse of that... did the spare tire thing... the jack... strut mounts... end links and finally the sway bar bushings

Its the two rubber mountson the bar with the end links with brackets and i believe they are 12mm bolts.

I just discovered the same thing today. Mine wasn't bad bushings, but the bushing mounts weren't tight enough allowing them to bang into the unibody and create a 'clunk'. Very very annoying...and now its gone biggrin.gif.

No, that sounds like a bad suspension bushing to me.

yes i need to know what this problem is as well. I have the exact same one where when i hit a bump i hear this clunking sound and it is kinda random (not to mention really noisy) but doesnt happen when you test the shocks by pressing down on them. I have also checked to see if it is the spare tire or jack or my sub box but it is neither of these things so when u find out what exactly is the problem i am going to get that checked out on my car as well.

i got under the car and checked the sway bar. When i push up on it is does move up and down and does seem like it could be making the noise. The rubber bushings arent broke though and the bolts ARE tight. Are the rubber bushings supposed to be really tight around the sway bar? The rubber bushing have room for the bar to move up and down when i push on it.

clunking while stopping?
on a flat road...all i would think of is a warped rotor...but then you would have a pull spot while breaking...hmm

if not that, you're breaking a little hard, and it is suspension tongue.gif

No, that sounds like a bad suspension bushing to me.

I had it checked out by mechanic today, it turns out that the brake pads are wearing out and the noise they start to make acts like a warning device when ur pads are about to go.
*phew* thought it was something more serious, had me real worried

It was a problem with the stock wheels and i changed my rotors. It stopped before but need to check it again. I just put in my 17" and the clunking noise started again. The clunking noise is constant while the car is in motion. It seems to come from the right rear wheel. If it's not the rotors i dont know what it is, but i'll check the sway bar.
