JDM/Euro Celicas vs USDM Celica.

Now that I've bought a set of BEAMS gauges for my celica, I'm wondering if the difference in speed between the km/h and mph models is determined by the speed sensor or the gauges. From a design point of view, it would be easier for Toyota to make only one set of gauges with a different face, where the km or miles per hour are determined by different sensors that are installed. Verses making two different types of gauges. But I don't know, I'm just guessing.

I'm hoping I don't have to swap internal parts of the gauges. I'm probably going to just plug them in and see what happens.


Also:

I'm wondering if the BEAMS gauges are plug and play. I'm aware of the difference between the RPM counter side, this is why I'm installing them. I need the BEAMS rpm counter.

The speed sensor is the same. The gauges should be plug and play, as several guys here swap the tach and fuel/temp gauges in when they do a BEAMS swap. I can't say for sure about the speedo though.

ok. I plugged them in today and the battery light didn't light up on either the ST205 or ST202 gauges. Gauge backlights didn't work either. I didn't start it after the lights didn't come on, I just immediately turned it back off. So I put my original ones back in and there was a clicking every couple of seconds until I turned the headlights off and back on, then the clicking was gone. I did buy them from the same seller, so it's possible that he pulled out the good bulbs and replaced them with bad bulbs. But who does that? I'll plug them back in tomorrow or Monday after I replace the bulbs with known good ones. ThenI can finally connect my RPM gauge to the SM4! And have a working temp gauge!!

The clicking was just the tripmeter. I must have bumped the reset button at a weird angel and it wouldn't turn right. So when it tried to turn it would click and the number would jump a little bit. That's how I found it.

how does the boost gauge work, it gets a signal straight from the ecu right?

boost gauge should get its input from the MAP sensor.

That's strange. why doesn't the map sensor feed the ecu? Is there a second one? Or does the signal split somehow?

i believe the wire splits. its a single wire from the PIM signal and then splits into two. one to the ECU and one to the body harness that takes it up to the gauge.
