Hello 6gc. I have a 1994 celica gt and my axle keeps getting stretched and then it breaks. I have a new control arm. The car was hit in the passenger fender over the winter but I used that same axle all winter and all summer. The problem just started happening now, 8 months or so later. I have a new control arm and a new wheel bearing. Any suggestions would be helpful I used an axle from advanced auto first. Then it broke. Then I bought another axle from advanced auto, That one broke in two days of driving. I am confused. The original axle lasted for a while after the accident. But currently axles are breaking hours after installation. not sure what the problem is. Anybody can help me please. Thanks in advance.

How/where are they breaking? Any pictures of the broken axles? The first axle broke in the boot in the middle of the axle. The second axle was stretched and the whole axle was in one piece but when I came off the highway from work the car wouldnt move even though It was in gear. The car felt like it had a bad clutch but I had drove to work fine which is 40 mins away from my house. When I drove home the car lost all gears at the exit to my house got the car towed. my mechanic put in another axle. That axle failed within 10 mins after driving the car. I have not seen the condition of that axle or where it broke from because he just finished working on the car today. It broke the wheel bearing which my mechanic replaced as well as a new axle. I have not driven the car yet but I dont want it to fail on me again |

Just a heads up, new members' posts are kept invisible until a moderator approves them. We had a spam bot issue a while back and this is just a way to keep the boys under control. Don't mms the automatically generated PM's. I'm just cleaning up duplicate threads, but this thread and all of your new posts are set visible as soon as myself or any of the other mids see them.
![]() Where are the axles coming from? The CV joints are meant to have a little play in them but shouldn't ever separate while you drive. I know that the 5th gen axles are slightly shorter than 6th gen axles, and some auto parts stores sell 5th gen axles as 6th gen axles. I don't know whether that's the case for the ST or GT, however. -------------------- "Employ your time in improving yourself by other men's writings, so that you shall gain easily what others labored hard for." -Socrates. Yes my mechanic did say that the axle seemed shorter so he ordered 3 different axles from different years but do you think i got the wrong axle This defenetely could be a possibility. What should I do Should I order it from a dealer and instal it myself if it fails again?

Don't order one for a 94.
Order one from a 95. I suspect they are giving you 5th gen (93) axles. I also wouldn't rule out the fact that many after market axles I've had have been terrible. -------------------- |

Thanks Batman If the problem persists after I get my car on Monday I will Definetely order for a 95 whats the difference in the 95? Do you think the steering spindle or knuckle could be bent causing the axle to bend and break? When the last axle broke I also had to change the Wheel Bearing. The wheel bearing was all apart Could this be due to a bad spindle or steering knuckle? |

I suspect they are giving you 5th gen (93) axles. Beat me to it. I forgot the measurements but the 5th gen units are slightly shorter, when I installed mine the boot was stretched when the axle was static. Never drove on it. Only Carquest was able to order a factory direct replacement, I'd order from them. It was only $20 or so more than the Advance/Autozone/O'Reilly options. That axle has been holding for a year and a half now. Yes Thats what my mechanic was suggesting that the axle was the wrong length he ordered 3 axles from different companies to see which one fit the best. I will try the car out with the axle he put in and if it doesn't work I will definetly order a carquest axle and put it in myself if I have to. Thanks for your expertise and quick response. Never had this problem before These autoparts stores got to get their stuff together lol costing me to much money

It looks like I found the problem. The time the car was hit I changed the control arm on that side and did a wheel alignment on the car. I believe that they did the wheel alignment incorrectly and this caused the first axle to become damaged. I just did a wheel alignment today on the car after getting it today and the car is running great. When they did the alignment the cars toe was way off on one side and this is why I believe the axles where stretching and becoming damaged. Thanks for all your input 6gc well appreciated.
