check continuity between the dizzy and ECU. wiggle the wires while checking to see if you have an intermittent. you will be surprised how often that happens.

I'll check the continuity this afternoon looks like I'll have some free time to mess with it today.

When checking continuity all I need to do is hold one lead to ground and the other to one of the connector pins, correct? Just want to be sure, electronics diagnosis is not my forte when it comes to automotive work. Resistances are easy to check. I vaguely remember some of this stuff from shop class in HS lol.

With this your problem is most likely Not in the wires but in the connection between the male plug on the dizzy and the female connector plug.
What you would want to do is use your ohm meter from the ECU plug and see if you can read the pickup coils on the dizzy from there. Unplug the battery too.
So you want to figure out which wire/pin on the ECU is connected to G-,G+. and then between Ne-,Ne+
And you need some tiny needle probes on your millimeter, or clamps to hook to thermostat (18ga) wire or some sewing needles.

I've got More details on how I did it in the thr3ad I linked at first, ill dig for them after Diff EQ (around 2:00)

Ok thanks Vav, I found which pins are for the diz yesterday in the ECU plug, just wasn't sure of correct testing, that and the rain picked up a bit. I'll check it out

Alright, here we go

Checked continuity at the ECU plug that runs to the diz.

NE+ and NE- should be 375-530
I picked up 450

G+ and G- should be 185-275
I picked up 230

Tried wiggling the wires on both ECU and diz side of circuit and the readings never budged.

Edit: btw, the wiring diagrams in the Haynes manual didn't have my pin-out right. The 4 pins on my harness are stacked two on top the other two (blue&yellow over red&black) on the 26-pin connector. However iirc the BGB link Vav sent me is accurate.

Ya I never trust Haynes or Chilton for wiring diagrams. And the pin-outs change from year to year, but the wire color for circuits stays the same for the Celica.
Hard to say if you can't prove it for sure what the real problem is. But if your plug is brittle and the locking clip is busted i'd replace it anyway.
And if that guy still has that ECU id probably pick it up anyway because if you have to get one from Toyota it'll be $300+ at least.

Ok, decided to take one last GOOD hard look at the ECU before plugging it back up and starting the car. Found something..

Notice all the blackness around the capacitor? I missed this in the dim kitchen light last night..

Could this finally be the end of this wild goose chase?!

now you know for sure.

I'm glad we were able to help you out Wraith!

Yeah something told me to take another look at it before hooking everything back up this afternoon. I was looking for "obvious" defect. I blame the poor lighting lol. Yeah I meant to ask you in tht last post Vab if that was the same cap that went out on yours. Sweet.

Searched LKQ salvage yard website and they just put out a 95 celica. Won't know if it's the right ECU unless I go look for myself, so I'll be making a trip to Raleigh if I'm able to get out of work in time. If it's not what I need I may just hit up the guy you referred me to Vav.

Fingers are crossed. Thanks Guys

awesome. good luck with finding a used one. I got lucky, I think the next time I see one parted out I might buy the ecu just so I've got a spare. even the replacement I got is still 20 years old. I think the bad ground is what fired mine though. maybe idk

So the ECU was the problem? Can you update this once you replace it to 100% confirm?

If you examine the board and see black marks and goop coming out 0f capacitors you can be sure that's the problem

I will definitely confirm whether the ECU is the problem once I get one in my hands. I went to Raleigh today and left empty handed, it was a 7a. Dammit, if it had fenders worth a crap it could've made up for it lol but no luck there either. I know of a few other places to check around this week(end). If I can't find anything local I'll hit up the forums here and some of the other toyota/celica sites.
