My fuel gauge has been not working lately. When I fill up the gauge only goes to about 7/8th full and will sit there for about 150 miles then drop fast. The fuel light came on today with the gauge at 1/4 and at 310 miles. Is it the gauge or the sending unit? And how do you check?

The issue is most likely your fuel level float in the gas tank, they can start sticking and not read correctly. I had a car that would show a 1/2 tank when it was full and turn on the gas light at 1/4 tank, thats when I was going purely by mileage to tell how full the tank was.

Its your sending unit. it loses connection on the center pins due to being used a lot and the metal traces on the inside break the connection, then reconnects at a lower, less used area.
I just helped a friend with that issue on his ride. Yours sounds like upscaled symptoms he was having

What's the easiest way to test it to make sure it's that before I blow a lot of money on it?
