Sorry to disappoint you but there's nothing you can do that'll make a notable improvement outside of forced induction. It's an economy engine through and through, hence the FE designation. The best thing you can do is work on things like suspension and handling, and then enjoy getting into the upper 30's while doing it. There are hybrids using the 5-valve 4A or the 4A-GZE but they require a lot of work and at the end of the day you're better off doing a 1MZ, 3S-GTE, or BEAMS swap.

Upgrade the suspension. You'll have more fun that way. strut bars, sway bars, endlinks, coilovers, poly bushings. etc.

The 7GC short shifter is another good upgrade and it's inexpensive.

Youwwon't notice much in the way of HP gaines. However if you through on a header SRI and a High-Flow cat it will help free up some of the restrictions on the flow of the motor and it will definitely feel like it has somemmore pep in its step. Worked well on the corolla which has the 7a

This This This This, 100 Times This.

We won our class and got 2nd place overall in a 24 Hours of Lemons race with the 7AFE.

It will take him a moment to realize that he's about to make a 180 degree turn at speed, but you will be ready for it. Brace for the g's, and fast heel-toe work.
