does water get in the hood scoop onto the engine or is there a water bypass?

The two scoops at the back drip water into areas with largely nothing in. On a proper gt4, the small scoop feeds into the belt cover and has its own water bypass. The large grill has a plastic guide that causes the water to drop between radiator and exhaust manifold if fitted (or onto the manifold if acelerating). But most people remove that and the hood (bonnet) lining causing water to drip directly onto the manifold.

Does this cause any troubles with the manifold? (extreme heating/cooling)

let's just say it's not as bad as driving to the local car wash and washing the engine bay.. or another example is to drive from point a to point b and parking your car outside in -20 degree weather (another example of extreme cooling).
so seeing that the above two examples are perfectly ok, i wouldn't worry about rain falling through the vent.

you could also just use longer bolts and a few body washers. how many/how tall it needs to be will vary a bit depending on how straight your car is.

i used like 3 or 4 body washers for years till i swaped in the gt-4 bumper support.

I hate to post a reply to such an old thread, especially a thread that has been sticky-d. But in regards to not being able to install a GT-FOUR front bumper with a stock GT/ST hood, well that is incorrect as I just installed a GT-FOUR front bumper on a 94 Celica ST with the stock hood. The only thing is, I had to remove the crash the bar, but as noted in this sticky you would have to modify the stock crash bar to fit with the GT-FOUR hood. I did not modify any portion of my car or bumper besides removing the crash bar, and it is actually decently flush. I will post pictures tomorrow.

It's not that it doesn't fit, it just doesn't fit properly. The stock hood pushes the center portion of the bumper down, creating a gap near the high beams. Not super noticeable unless you know to look for it.

I certainly agree with you to an extent richee, but this post suggests that installing the GT-FOUR front bumper only is absolutely out of the question:

"5. Can I get the GT-FOUR bumper without the hood?

No. The hood will hit the bumper before reaching the hood latch since the center of the st205 bumper is higher than stock."

That simply is not the case. The hood is no where near hitting the bumper in my car. I think it's important to have correct information on here as getting a front bumper & hood can be costly, and/or if people just want the front bumper than they can do so.

Thanks for that feedback.
I've updated the OP with that new bit of information.

the only problem with this is that it looks like the bolt holes don't line up. bottom one is at a different angle. I'm in the middle of figuring this out. How do you get the longer bolts to line up?

also did you have any trouble with mounting the GT-4 bumper retainer bracket on a non-gt-4? my bracket doesn't line up right once I press in the pins on either end.
