I have a 1995 5S motor that I put in a 1996 GT convert. Everything is hooked up but engine is not turning over. Its getting fuel but seems like its not getting spark. I noticed the 95 motor has a different distributor than the 96. The 96 has a 5th wire that connects a coil module located on the firewall but the 95 motor does not have a 5th wire. Not sure if that makes a difference.

Have you checked for spark? Pull the plug boot and stick an spark plug in it then put it close to something metal like the valve cover. Have someone crank the engine and see if it sparks (or take a video like I do when I'm working alone). If you don't see spark, pull the ignition lead from the ignition coil and see if that sparks. If you don't have spark at all, I'd start checking grounds and timing. IIRC the car won't spark if the timing is off more than a tooth.

'95 is OBDI and '96 is OBDII, so you're going to have to transfer over any OBDII specific parts over.

What immediately sticks out to me is going from a cam sensor to a crank sensor, which would cause no spark.

Ok, transferring over any OBDII specific parts....

1. distributors - I guess I can just switch them?

I thought this would be a quick swap.... The motor slid in with no trouble. Mr. Murphy and his messed up law!!!

Ok, as a quick test I connected up the 95 ECU and the car stated and is running like a champ wink.gif

But, I know I'm going to have all types of emissions headaches being ODBI here in Maryland. I had this issue with the 97 Celica when I did the JDM 3SGTE swap. They have not bothered me in the 95. I'm guessing now because it is ODBI like the JDM ECU.

Is there something simple I can do to use the 96 ECU so it will pass emissions and i can sell the car?

It could be as simple as hooking up the crank sensor in lieu of the cam sensor, I'd go through somewhere like RockAuto to cross reference parts numbers too see which parts are '96 and up and which ones didn't change.

I found this on another site....

BMR:
"There are pickups in the distributor that provide that info to the ECU. IIRC, the CamPS mounts on the head, so you'd have to swap heads. The CrankPS, I'm not sure how it mounts. And I'm thinking the timing belt pulley on the crank has teeth for the CrankPS to read, so you need to swap that as well."

deddy:
"CrankPS mounts to the oil pump. Use the newer oil pump and the mount points will be present. You'll also have to use the newer crank gear, since it has the 'flat' needed by the Crank Position sensor.

Also, you'll need to use the Cam back plate from the '99 that has the cutout for the Cam Pos Sensor."





I think this is for a 96+?
