No pictures because engine bay scuzz and fluids up to my elbows.

To be continued tomorrow. (axles, radiator, brakes, valve gaskets)

Changed the transaxle oil today, with some Lucas Oil 80/90. I've been running synchromesh while it was cold but lately it was as if i could feel more friction in it. Gear oil still breaks down and I'm not going to let it go more than 10k-13k miles.

Parked the car at work and just before shutting off, heard a strange noise. Look underhood and the alternator belt is down to two ribs. I cut off the frays at the advice of a co-worker, worked, and drove home very carefully just now. The belt made a lot of noise at startup and I think it went entirely after moving a few hundred meters, because the battery light came on and the noise stopped. No power steering and I drove part of the way with lights off and hazards on. Checked underhood again and the belt was vacant, so hopefully no damage when it came off. She got me home safely, only a 20 minute drive. Thanks Toyota!

That's why you should always carry pantyhose in your car, it makes for a great impromptu belt.

Good idea for a toolkit spare. I tried looking for some at work but none were available.

Yup. It's a lot faster and easier to use than throwing on a belt on most cars, which is good if one happens to break at the worst of times i.e. at night in a bad area or ten plus miles from the nearest interstate exit.

You can buy it off Amazon or eBay if you want to avoid any weird looks at the store. That or get a lady friend to get it for you, or maybe you just don't care. Either way. tongue.gif

A few weeks ago, the alternator belt left the engine bay. I got a new belt on a few days ago, and as I'm tightening the tensioning bolt on the alternator it snapped near the base, a few cm left in the bracket. Talking to a friend he suggested giving the alternator support while tightening, maybe that was my mistake, or maybe it was the the other two mounting bolts were already fastened. Fun stuff...

I've always used a pry bar to lift the alternator to get the tension on the belt and then tighten down the bolt. Most alternators I've ever done have the one mounting bolt that lets the alternator pivot and then the other bolt goes into the bracket and holds the alternator into position. I want to say the Celica had a special tensioner system because I remember thinking "What the Hell" when I was doing a tune-up on it and I got to checking and tightening the belts. In fact I know there's something weird to it, I want to say AutoZone had the procedure in their online mechanic section thingy.

Today I bought a jasma exhaust for the celica. Will start working on it soon. Once Friday comes around I'm buying lowering springs so I can start on the suspension. I'm getting excited biggrin.gif
