So I get all the headaches of fighting the rust and none of the benefits of owning the car. Swapping parts between engines has been a royal pain. Hopefully next weekend I can get the new motor shoved up the car's midsection and put it back on the ground.

Ye, the BRAT is out of the question. It looks to be in decent shape, but it's needing unobtanium parts serviced and just no it's bad enough trying to find parts where millions upon millions were made... Supposed to get some pictures and information on the Beetle tomorrow though.

heat things with a torch and quench with WD40, hella smoke but it works great, cooling parts pull the WD into the threads and come loose like butter.

It's a legit tip. Technically if you get the parts hot enough and do that a few times you've case hardened the steel. laugh.gif


WD40 from a spray bottle not a can is best to use, other penetrating lubes may also work but WD40 is what we use at the shop generally. It smokes A LOT as the lighter oils flash off but the heavier oils stick around and soak in and it lets you cool a part down without cooling it a lot since the WD40 doesn't carry off heat like water, it'll still be too hot to touch once you've quenched it with WD40. I suppose you could also use a dropper bottle of trans oil or engine oil too as those are heavier and have even higher flash points, that may actually work even better now that I think about it! I'll try that next time. Just remember if you need to reheat and there's liquid WD40 you'll need to flush it off with water before heating again because it will catch fire from an open flame.

Construction workers, and probably other occupations that a torch was a day to day tool, would toast sandwiches with a torch, so I don't see why you couldn't do a quesadilla. tongue.gif

The Beetle appears to be in good shape aside from some surface rust on the passenger rear quarter and has bubbling in one spot of the passenger door and then the driver rear quarter has some bubbling. The engine has been rebuilt and has some kind of number distributor and carb that I have no clue what it means or the importance of. Outside of the Accord I haven't heard from in three weeks it's the only other vehicle I've been offered I remotely like. I've always thought they looked cool, just the issue of being slower than sin that concerns me. I drive like an old man anyway, I just like to have the ability to get up and go if needed. Interstate would be out of the equation, but everywhere I go currently can be accessed with highways and backroads.

Yeah supposedly the original with only some 25 hp was meant to sustain speed of 100 km/h(62 mph) on the then new Autobahn, so I'd imagine this one with 60 hp could fare ok at 70-75 mph but that's all it could do. That's ok I'd be too scared to drive it on the interstate anyway, I didn't even like the idea of using the Firebird on the interstate and it's a fair bit bigger with some safety features implemented like shoulder belts, side impact bars, collapsing steering column, and crumple zones. I think the Beetle has a collapsing steering column and that's about it. At least there's a million and one things to do with a Beetle and they seem to be universally popular. What's weird is looking into them and some of the quirks they have. Like instead of a motor for the windshield washer fluid it uses the spare tire, that and some for heat used a separate propane heater though I think this year uses the heat off the motor somehow, and the engines don't have oil filters. All kinds of weird stuff.

Nice to see there are kits that can be put together. Messaged the Accord guy and he says he's down to the last payment before getting the title and still really wants the Firebird, so I dunno anymore. I uploaded the Beetle pictures and will throw them down below to see what you guys think. As a car I rather have the Accord since it has A/C, is fuel injected so no more constant tinkering, comfy interior and ride, adequately quick, no rust, etc... typical newer car advantages. I suppose ideologically I rather have the Beetle, it's cool/nifty and sticks out, no electronics nonsense, RWD(as if it matters with the stock engine), and probably is worth more. Plus the Beetle is something I see and go "oh that's cool", whereas the Accord it's more like "oh it looks better than any generic people mover". I mean the Accord isn't ugly I guess, but it's not what I'd consider eye-catching like the Celica is. Anyhow, here're all the pics I received:

the bug looks fun but at this point Box, i'd go for something that'll be comfortable and you can just daily without worry. like you said, AC, fuel injected and electronics etc.

Ye, I guess I can look around to see what can be done with an Accord that isn't cheap eBay garbage. I like how it looks from the windshield back, I just wish they had done more with the front end to differentiate it from the sedan.
