I've been taking it easy because of my head gasket. After a whole tank of not accelerating over 3000 rpm and setting the cruise control at 58 mph the light came on at 395 miles, and
I filled up 13.6 gallons at 410 miles for an Astonishing 30.2 mpg in my 2.2L

I get between 27-28mpg with 80-90% city driving by shifting like the video. On the highway I don't use cruise control. I found out it works better going through all the gears rather than skipping a gear in city driving.

I've been a customer for Chevron for nearly 3 years straight. Now I've switched to shell. Lets see how it goes. Nothing wrong with Chevron by the way.

in this part of the country we have Quick Trip which is Top teir, but I stop at a Shell if I cant find a QT. I've been doing like you showed and shifting around 2200 now, but mine is about 85% highway and 15% city each day. and so far I'm estimating 6 gallons used at 200 miles, that's 33 mpg biggrin.gif

alright well I got a solid figure for beams redtop

I got 340 miles from a full tank driving streets only!! all the way till the gas light turned on. When the Gas light turns on it means you have two gallons left right???

So 340 miles (street miles) divided by 14 gallons = 24.5 miles per gallon when shifting between 2,500 rpm and 3,000 rpm. I always keep my speed at 45-50mph max while on the streets.

Drove to Vegas Yesterday. Normal wind conditions, tire pressure 31psi, no rear seats and 20lbs lighter battery.

I have an SS3 Celica beams redtop.

Got 480 miles on full tank driving 72mph at 3,500rpm, only made two stops and used the air conditioning on low fan speed for about 1.5 hours. The other 6.5 hours I had windows slightly open at an inch and a half and had only 15lbs worth of tools in car.

So that equals 32mpg. Drove a while after gas light went on. So I had about 25 miles left in tank

I only get between 21 to 25. On highway if I behave, I get around 27 on my 1996 ST with manual transmission. Question: For those of you who have ST with manual, What RPM you guys are at 70 (5th gear) and 80 mph? Mine stays close to 4K around 75. I have 15 inch Celica wheels from a 2001 Celica.

Gah, I get better than that in the Firebird. It's been awhile but I think something is off on your car, I seem to recall being right under 3,500 at 70 mph. If I had to take a guess the tires are taller than what they're supposed to.

Box: Tires are 185/55/15 Kelly tires I got a couple of year ago from local Goodyear. I have put new rings and bearings and complete new head when I got the car and it runs fine with very little oil consumption. The clutch has not been replaced yet and I think it needs one. I pull in each gear but not too hard, but I am always over the speed limit. tomorrow I will check again at 70mph and report back.

Tires are due soon so what size you recommend on 25 inch rims.

185/70-14 was stock, so 185/55-15 are way too small. 24.2" tall stock vs 23" what's on there now. I brain blanked earlier since bigger tires would make the speedometer read slower but would need less engine rotations, smaller tires would make the speedometer read faster but would need more engine rotations.

195/60-15 would put you at the stock diameter.

Those are like 23.4" tall, so not as bad but still a little too small. I got like 36-40 out of mine but I drove like an old man and most of my driving was on the highway at 55 mph, I'd imagine interstate driving at 70 mph would've dropped that to 32-36 or so. Mine had factory 14" alloys and had been lowered, so that probably helped some as well.

Thanks Box. I think before the winter sets in, I am due for a new set. What is the next fat tire I can use? The reason for asking since the car is stock height, the wheel well looks to big (if that makes sense). I don't like lowering it because, the roads of Oklahoma are really bad.

Thanks for all your help Box.

sorry for the thread jack guys!

Well 195/60-15 would be about .8" taller top to bottom than what's on there now, so another .4" of sidewall and it would be the right diameter needed.
