Well i have a GT4 and i am thinking of making the hood scoop functional by removing the insulation from under the hood. Due to high temps in my country the heat soak on the hood will be great. So after giving it some thought i think i will remove the insulation and cover parts of the hood underneath with a self adhesive heat rerflecting material. I found this. reflective material

Does anybody else tryed something similar? Is that product reliable? What do you think?

Neoklis,i think you should just remove the insulation under the hood just for the summer and put it back in the Winter.
Your car stays in a garage right???

I have a 94 GT and was wondering the same thing. I thought it was to protect the hood from excessive heat, but when I hear take it off in the summer and put it back on in the winter, it dosent sound like that is true. What exactly is the purpose of that thing?

FYI, I have a carbon fiber hood, does that change anything?

The reason is to avoid any heat soak and damage to the paint of the hood. And if i use this heat reflective material i will only need to cover the hood scoop for the winter.
The reason why magic says "put it back in the winter" is for protection from the rain in the winter.

I believe this product from Thermo Tec (24"x12" self adhesive) is much better.Thermo tec 24 x 12

What do you think?

neoklis the bonnet doesnt get v hot anyway. It will get hotter sitting out in the sun for 20 minutes, i wouldnt even worry about it

Not that i have a real GT4 or anything but my GT hood didnt even have installation

All Celica's came with the hoodinsulation, as most cars do. You dont need it.

nope didnt order it with the GT4 hood and didnt have any on my GT hood when i got the car

I'll second that smile.gif

Really, it wont matter at all that the insulation isnt there anymore. The sun would do more damage than under bonnet heat to the paint.

Well you see i dont really ever leave my car out in the sun as we hae 11 months summer in my country and actualy in the summer its about 40 Celcious in the shade (100 F) My uncle has a dealership and i have seen hundreds of paint jobs ruined by the sun. Others have told me that heat soak from the engine would not probably ruin the paint job of the hood but seeing how much hotter it gets under there compared to my curren i don't want to risk it. And for $15 for a piece of 24"x12" (probably need 2 pieces to cover some major parts only) i think there is no reason for doubting.

You will be amazed at the amount of heat which pours from the bonnet vent its quite incredible. The 3S-GTE is a hot running engine - you really should get rid of all that heat.

I would much rather pay for a paintjob on a hood every few years than have all that heat trapped inside the engine.

Get rid of it. The high temperatures in Cyprus are even more reason to do this smile.gif

so say you remove it on a GT4 hood. what if it does rain and u get water in your engine / on the IC. What kinda problems is this gonna cause.

I've been thinking about removing the insulation but we had some "serious" April showers and they're still happening in May. A black hood, insulation and a hot 3SGTE don't do well in hot weather, good job I live in London then eh tongue.gif . If I was you neoklis I'd take it off in the summer. Check K1ANO 's site, he removed the insulator on his Carlos Sainz GT4. Check the ST185 Mod page

The vent is directly over the heatshield, the engine and IC are covered by the hood.

There is nothing really sensitive in the area under the vent from an electrical point of view.

Pretty much every car in the UK GT-Four owners club has the insulation removed - its a regular event at our meets - parking lot removal of insulation smile.gif

Do you think your engine dosnt get wet when your driving around when its raining anyways... And the only things that would have possible problems getting wet are the battery, if a puddle formed and crossed the terminals (highly unlikely!) or the altenator got pretty wet, but this wouldnt really be a problem, the engine would just be a bit boggy till it dried.

And the only other problem would be if you poured (not if it rained) cold water on your head, turbo, turbo manifold, or any other hot piece you risk cracking, which rain would have no chance of doing.
