Im looking to build me own catback system. Minus the gato. Ive been lookin around and see that its feesable with some mandrel bent tubing and lots of good welding. Can anyone give me tips on what diameter tubing to buy or anything else, like a really solid, not farty, not too loud but a little raspy, muffler? Also, when welding, what about the flanges, connecting to the headers from the pipe, do those need to be customized or retrofitted somehow? thanks

If you can afford it, get stainless. Its worthwhile. Check out www.burnsstainless.com for tubing, connectors, etc. They're kinda pricey but they're prompt and have high quality products. Have you ever welded before? I've had the best luck welding stainless with a tig welder. Aluminized steel can be welded with a tig or mig. Magnaflow mufflers are the best I've found. They sound really good (deep and powerful sounding, not raspy), they're failrly cheap, and they're really well made. I would suggest 2.25 or 2.5 for NA celicas and 2.5-3 diameter for turbo celica. I'm in the process of building a complete 3" stainless exhaust and DP for my celica, but its probably still a month off. I'll post pics when its done.

This shop said it was do 2.5" pipe through out the whole thing and then but a magnaflow exhaust for about 450 i was gonna do it
but then my friend said go with the greddy because you wont pass emission with the custom.
so i am still confused

why would you not pass emisions with custom, but pass with the greddy... all the greddy is, is mandrel bent piping with a greddy muffler on the end... And custom is the same thing, maybe not as mandrel bent as greddy, but still the same.

If you don't want it too loud don't get 2.5" because that will be too much. Stainless doesn't really give any benefit over mild steel other than it will last a few years longer, and looks good... but it costs quite a bit more.

I have a full 2.25" system on my NA 5sfe now and it's sweet. 4-2-1 header, flex joint (because it's FWD), downpipe, high flow cat, long stainless resonator, stainless piping back to the axle with mandrel bends over that, then a nice custom 5" straight thru muffler.

It's pretty loud since I got the header put on.. probably Illegal I think. But I got the cat-back section done first.. and it was just for what you want.. Only loud in the high revs and a nice quiet hum at idle, so I'd say go a 2.25" catback. Also make sure you put a resonator in because you don't want any nasty barking/burbling happening.

yea so mandrel bent is better
so why not get the greddy?
or try to convince me to get custom.

You guys should shop around a bit if you're not familiar with pipes and welding. Custom exhausts aren't that expensive (mine was done for 200 including a muffler)... if you're planning on going with mandrel bends... get under your car and start measuring where the bends are, and where you want the exhaust to go. Pre-bent pipes are fairly expensive and not planning will cause you to buy too much pipe... or too little. That... or spend a few thousand and buy a mandrel pipe bender... ;]

I can get my hands on a greddy thats not a problem
all i the qutoes i am getting are around the same price for custom and greddy
the battle continue between Greddy and Custom

to stay legal with a cat.
get a highflow cat gut out the honeycomb...... and then replace the inside of the cat with a smaller pipe one that fits snug. then cut the pipes equal and weld them together. In the end you have a pipe straight through ur cat with out losing the visual of the cat. so when you get pulled over for being to loud you can look i have my cat and everything.

just a way to keep it legal ....
