i figured engines would be best place for this, i drove my brothers 97 saturn sc1 today and i floored it, (its an automatic) and when it got to the redline (5500) it kept on going to about 6k.... im puzzled i thoguht they were supposed stop at or before the redline, mine stops a few hundred rpm before. can anyone tell me if this is normal or not? thanks

Just hold the R1 button. It works in GT3

In our celis you can floor it until redline, then it will shift- in park tho, you can rev it past the red.
My guess is that Saturn's automatic tranny's 1) Aren't very good or 2) Saturn just painted the redline way early to be "safe" with their crappy engines. |

Well, couple things. In my car at least, if I all out floor it (as hard down and as far as it will go) I rev to right around 5600 in "1st", 5400 in "2nd", and 5200 in "3rd". I haven't topped out "4th" in quite some time, and when I did I got a speeding ticket (104 in a 70...) so I really can't say what I hit there. But, if you REALLY want to get those extra RPMs out of your car, you can shift it, but I warn you, it's dangerous to your engine and your transmission. I've been able to run first up to 34mph, second through 62mph, and third right around 85mph while shifting, and the engine sound is AWESOME, but I really wouldn't recommend it for daily driving.
I forgot I was in 2nd once as well... lol... went past redline and hit fuel cut. When you're not in Overdrive, you can go past redline. It's an interesting experience. -Brian |

Hurt the engine as taking it to redline.. No Thats why there is a red-line.. so it stops before you hurt the engine.. Its not really super good for it.. But theres NO-Reason to do it.. our power band dies after 5600 .. So take it to around 6 an then shift .. or as much as it will go with an auto.. My Bimmer was an auto, an had a button to switch modes to man sift it.. That raised the reline about 1k rpm.. an it was quicker.. but that Had a higher powerband..

You won't be able to redline 4th in an automatic. Sorry dude. In our cars the highest I got mine was like 4200-4400 RPMs, and that was going right around 115 on the speedo. Dunno about that Saturn, but AFAIK you cannot redline any automatic in its final gear.

Probably not, but it probably also means that redline is just "painted" on

Most supercars now days are automatics, and you can take them to redline in each gear, so there!! hahahahaha

a lot of automatic GM cars do that
put my friends 1994 trans am into performance mode(little button by auto tranny shifter) and it shifts at 6krpm. redline is 5600 or something like that. puts it right in the peak torque for the next gear -------------------- 1994 Celica GT4 WRC Edition

On GM cars i think that lil button or what ever, only makes it so it dosnt go into o/d.. Witch does help.. but not to much for shifting in 1st or 2nd an such... |

My buddy's '96 Saturn SC2 does the same thing. He can hit 7k RPM if you just gas his auto. I was surprised that the little Saturn's twin cam 1.9L could rev that high.
