so yeah driving my friends rsx through my neighborhood at like 2 tonight (yeah i know its really dumb) and well i was driving like its my own personal race track. anyways i started getting really deep into some corners and i noticed the abs kicking in. and well i felt like i was gonna slide right off the road i felt it nto want to stop.
anyways how do you guys feel on abs you like it, you dont? also are you supposed to pump abs for actuatly stop? anyways is it possible to just flip a switch and turn off the abs(on nice cars)? also do any gt's come with abs? i know for a fact that gt-fours come with it. -------------------- Former: 96 GT 5 speed (i/p/e) Fate- rear ended by mack truck

ABS is a lifesaver, I mean, it is. Stopping distance is shortened by a bit, and they don't lock up. I wish I had ABS No, you do NOT pump ABS breaks. No, it's not just possible, but why would u want to? Ur expierences were probably just a combination of driving a new car u weren't used to, and a breaking system u weren't used to. ABS is superior. Yes, a lot of the GTs came with ABS; the fact that GT4s came with ABS should tell ut hat it's better for all types of cars |

ABS is good... it negates poor braking ability. The RSX is a beautiful handler also...

going into corners and the ABS was kicking in?
i thought ABS only worked when you were braking... if that's the case, isn't breaking IN the corner supposed to whip out your rear. . . o-well and as for ABS being superior, heh watch Initial D again. Something like: ABS can never outperform a highly trained driver...they're reflexes are THAT good hah -------------------- |

ABS kicks in any time during hard braking. The rear doesn't ever whip out in a FF car unless you apply direct pressure to it (e-brake)... and like I mentioned above, ABS makes a person who's not particularly good at braking, ok because it refuses to lock up. I personally like no ABS and like to lock up under harsh braking to intiate sharp turns and stuff... but that's my style and not everyone drives that way... Oh... and please please don't take intial D literally. ABS is good stuff... -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... I'm an artist!"

I dunno, I have mixed feelings .. Like somtimes i like it, but I for driving wise, i dont.. but what ever .. and you dont pump it.. thats the point.. they pump them selves.. and if you know how to drive and brake, there not really needed ..
Oh and you could set it up to turn them oiff,t he porshe 911 has it, so you can turn it off and on.. also a lot of other bad ass things.. |

ABS on the road, good, abs on the track, not so good! ABS in the snow, real bad news!!!!
Also depends on the ABS manufacturer. Some are alot better than others. |

for reasons listed above, for example on the track you wouldnt want it. but it would save your ass in the rain. also i came to the conclusion that some of those corners i had been breaking hard already and my brakes were pretty hot, i touched the rotors when i got to my house and they scorched me. also just stoping at my house from i noticed the car was braking like crap. so that might have something to do with it but were talking about 4 or 5 brakes from going from 80 - 40 pretty quick. and that makes me sad if i want to take my celi to the track brakes are going to have to be the first thing to be upgraded. anyways brakes performing like crap after 4-5 hard corners, what should that tell me? crappy pads. can you get pads that are tested up to higher temps? you guys suggest any? -------------------- Former: 96 GT 5 speed (i/p/e) Fate- rear ended by mack truck

totally agree with ABS in the snow being crap- you NEVER stop, just feel the brakes pump like mad... I prefer no ABS to be honest, Ive had cars with and without it (my celi dosent have it ), and in the winter I just dont think the payoff is great enough to have slightly better summer braking, and substanitally weaker winter breaking. There is no substitute for attentive driving, but thats just my opinion -------------------- Car #3: 98 Accord LX- purchased 5/06, totaled 8/06

i never owned a car with ABS so.... once u drive a car long enough u know that sweet spot in the brake right before it locks up. thats what i use. i can brake amazingly without locking up the brakes. but im sure id like abs if i ever had it?

I don't know why some of you guys don't like ABS on the track... but I really like it. With ABS... you can brake harder, later, and not worry about lock-ups during late braking. It's a good system, although not all ABS work the same...

The reason that abs is no good on the track is becasue you tend to get it kicking in on one wheel when it goes light entering a corner for example and once it startss running it judt locks and unlocks that wheel, it cant adjust the pressure, so you dont slow down so fast, unlike the newer brake distrubution systems.
Another reason for it being crap on the track, is you start to spin, iw you know youve lost it and you got hit the anchors, if you cant lock the wheels your gonna end up going deep into the inside of the corner, possibly the wall, the abs will send you into it. No abs and you can lock all the wheels and spin out safely. |

Err, thats not correct, ABS is pressure sensative and will only activate right before the wheels lock. Light up on it, and it'll stop pumping the breaks. Locking the breaks ON and not breaking won't help you corner For that matter, why are you breaking into a corner? This post has been edited by shid: Sep 27, 2004 - 12:15 PM |

Ok so breaking round a corner is not always a good idea, but if your on a track and lets say your taking a long left hander which then tightens up into a hair pin, your gonna need to brake!

right, but thats gentle breaking- or even you downshift so it engine breaks. If you're slamming on the breaks to the point where it locks up, you're trying to avoid hitting something. IE, you're about to crash into the wall in front of u. In which case, ABS would help. |
