Last week I experienced a serious problem with my transmission. While driving, I was shifting normally at 4500 rpm, and all of a sudden while in midshift it jammed, I could not select any gear, as desperately as I tried I had to run my baby down a hill in neutral and hope to swing her around to get back to the house. My mechanic has told me that the springs on the clutch exploded. Any of you guys with more mechanical experience have any idea how this happened?
My plan is to take a trip to Reno from Los Angeles this Friday. Do you think with this car just after the flywheel, clutch, and t.o. bearing were taken care of it will be safe to take? |

I had the same problem.Replace the parts and good as new.I blew my clutch so bad I had to drive my car without the clutch. And the day I was taking it in the clutch went completely.I could rev it to 6000 rpm and the car would not move.Replace the clutch and t/b and p/p and it will be fine.

Never seen exploded clutch but ive heard it happens. they usually just wear the clutch disk out though. Get it replaced and it will be just fine.

Heh i replaced my 8 year old 5s clutch last summer, there were sizable chunks of metal missing from the pressure plate, they ended up hanging around in the open space in the tranny. I didn't notice at all when i drove.

Shifting at 4500 is probably better for the clutch than what you are doing Sev. Shifting at that low of an RMP while moving can place a TON of stress on the whole drivetrain. Unless you pussy shift and bring the engine up to speed with the Transmission which wears down your clutch terribly. How do you shift exactly? BTW the clutch springs will only explode if they have been under a TON of stress for an extended period of time unless you got a faulty clutch. Not to mention guys you have DOHC engines...they really don't mind being up at the higher RPM's...they are designed to run at the higher RPM's when needed. Sure shifting at lower RPM's will get you better gas mileage but whats the fun of having a DOHC engine if you can't use it right? This post has been edited by Anub1s: Nov 29, 2004 - 10:25 PM |

I shift at 3500 and If I want to save gas I keep it in a lower gear.Sounds stupid but give it a try it really works. For ex if its a 60 kmh keep it in 3rd it will save you gas just give it a shot.

Also remember that if you keep everything at a low RPM you have to keep your foot more on the gas to make it accelerate, thus causing more gas consumption. Keeping it in a lower gear will minimize your foot being on the gas and you wont use as much.
Most cars optimal gas conservation RPM is usually in the 3000's while driving on the highway so that gives you an idea of where our cars are designed to run. |

I took a good look at the clutch that came out, the spaces between the tiny circles on the clutch were uneven, showing that the guy who sold it to me...the guy who also lied and sold me a salvaged car (f***ing jack a**) also lied about when he changed out the clutch. Now that I've replaced it seems to be doing fine, BTW I still shift in the upper RPMs when I feel like giving her a little bit of a push, and I still get 32 mpg. In fact I was on vapor this morning and still took her up to 5k. Hehe. Blew away a Civic in the process. Anywho, it seems to have resolved the problem, Im leaving for my trip this Friday.
Another question however, when I start my car and its cold, the idle remains at 850 rpm and stalls. How can I adjust the idle rpm for start up? I know theres a valve but I cant seem to find it. Also my lazy ass might need cruise control on my drive, the cruise control function doesnt work for some reason, is it controlled by computer or by-wire like some of those old beemers? Thanks again |
