Just got a 1999 GT Convertible. I read the book and know that the car has a 15+ gallon tank. However, I am never able to get more than 12.8 gallons in the tank, even when i have driven with the fuel light on for about 15 miles.

What gives? Anyone else have this problem? I guess what I want to know is whether it is shutting off before it fills or if the fuel light is coming on with like 3 gallons left in the tank.

I know i read that some of the Scion xA and xB were having some sort of problem such that the only way to fill the tank was to insert the fuel upside down when filling so that the auto shut off would not happen as easily.

Please help! I gotta know why I cant get 15 gallons in this thing.

Thanks in advance!

You're not completely empty when you're filling up, that's all... You can only put 12.8 gallons in because there is probably 2.2 still in there. And are you filling it yourself or getting it done at some full service station? They never fill it it all the way, they fill until it clicks off the first time and then round it to the nearest dollar or so. If you really want it filled you have to keep pumping until it won't come out before clicking off.

I wouldn't worry about it.

I have a 94 GT and after the guage is on E and the light is fully on I only put about 12.6 or so in it. Either its a flaw or the engineers were very cautious when setting the guage levels.

I most certainly not having anyone fill the tank for me. I guess I am just not used to a fuel warning light that comes on with 2-3 gallons left. I mean, that is 50-75 additional miles i can go once the light comes on. I guess that is possible, just kind of nervewracking staring at that light without knowing for sure.

Nope. Not complaining about not spending enough on gas, just wanting to be able to drive more than 300 miles on a tank before filling up. Would love to go 350-400 without worrying about running out of gas. Kind of a drag to have to fill it up just as often as the Toyota Pickup that i just got rid of.

Yeah celicas, do not get very good gas milage at all, but thats also cause im surronded by friends with hondas thta get 36mpg. Also once that light turns on, def fill up. Its not good for a pump or an engine to be sucking up that sludge at the bottom.. also it wills tart cloging sheat.. My buddie would allways run empty in his car, an ended screwing it up.

Are you serious man? My GT 5 speed gets 28 consistent mpg. My old ST automatic got about 32. Compare that to many of the other 4 door cars out there. Yes Civics get superb gas mileage but hey, our cars are cooler smile.gif

I think its kind of smart that the fuel light goes on when there is still a quarter tank left in the car. This way when you let it go down to E, you have plenty of gas left if you are far from a station for whatever reason. More importantly, its a good thing if you fill your car up with at least a quarter tank left in the car. The sediments that are more abundant when the tank is low can cause problems such as clogging the fuel injectors.
