Okay guys, I am thinking about getting a paint job from Maaco. I know all the rumors about it, but I know a few people that have gotten it done there, and they say as long as the car is prepped very well I should be fine.
What I was wondering is what is the difference between Urethane Enamel and Synthetic Enamel? Thanks in advance. BTW: I plan on doing the Indigo Ink Pearl from lexus/toyota Paint This post has been edited by mjmsoccer: Jan 17, 2005 - 5:06 PM |

I'd still avoid macco, do a google search and you'll hear how bad their rep is. I'd shop around for local shops and give them a budget and see what they can do. I'd even give it to a local tech. school to paint before macco.

OK, so after some time researching paint types I've found the following:
Polyurethane Enamel is supposed to be the best single stage paint you can get. There is a clear coat mixed in and it is to be harder and retain the shine better than synthetic or acrylic enamels. The main reason I was painting was due to a fender bender. I did all the body work and it finally looks half decent. There are some pictures in the link below going through the process. I had primed and painted the area until I had time to do body work, then I stripped it to metal, filled everything with bondo, then some metal glaze putty, and finally some filler primer. Body Work The welded crack was caused by the previous owner, which made things more difficult than it needed to be. The car goes to paint in the morning and I'll be picking it up Tuesday. I'll post pics when I get it back. |

I think so. The paint code is the same; I saw the color on a is300 and it is darker in person than that picture, but yeah I think the scion's have the same paint

Got my car back from painting, I just had to wait until the weather cleared up to get pictures.
And I know I need to fix my turn signals they got cracked and they leak now, but I can't fix it until I get back from school. This post has been edited by mjmsoccer: Jan 18, 2005 - 3:33 PM |

Looks really nice. I'm thinking about getting a scion/lexus paint as well, Black Sand Pearl.

Thanks guys. I just rough sanded it with 80 grit with a DA sander. You can still see some of the lines from where I sanded it, Maaco was supposed to prep it as well, but obviously they didn't or else those lines wouldn't have been there. If I would have done it over I would have hit it with 220 grit as well, but I had to rush to get it painted before heading back to college. Overall I'd say it was a pretty decent job for $450.

All maaco's are different. Some might have some good painters and some not. But for the price your not going to get anything awesomely good. For a older car that you just want to look pretty darn nice for a few more years then maaco is hard to beat. I got my old truck painted there and it came out pretty nice for 400$. Your car looks good also! Maaco usually does leave alot of orange peel though and it looks like you have some. You could wetsand it out with 2000grit and buff with compound to get a silky smooth finish. Looks nice though, good choice in color also.

Yeah, I wasn't expecting anything too much. I like the color a lot except its going to be a pain to keep clean. Alot of the toyota/scion/lexus colors would look great on celis. The grey would be awesome

Why did you sand your car with 80 grit or even sanding it with 220 grit? 220 might leave sand scratches, 320 would be good if the you sealed it. I just painted my celica S2000 yellow you can look at my profile for pics. It came out pretty good for just costing me $100 . Your car can out good for a Maaco paint job.

Toy: I was told all I needed to do was rough sand it using 80 grit by a guy who does some custom painting, and I hit the edges and lines with 220 because I heard thats where Maaco really slacks and causes the orange peels. BTW: Your paint job looks great, awesome color too.
Blinky: I was looking at the grey also, but I decided to stay blue so that I wouldn't have to paint the door jams and the engine bay. You wouldn't really notice the difference in the jams without looking pretty well. It is never going to be a show car, just a daily driver so I wasn't about to dump $1000+ into a $4000 car for paint. |
