is that really necessary? I realize you know people here but is it really worth coming here to insult and undermine people's efforts?

please realize I'm not targeting you simply because you don't own a celica but rather that these kinds of discouraging comments really bother me. we have a community here and I think its important that we support each others efforts regardless of what kind of budget we are working off of. my 2 'sense'

It is not the quality of the Maaco paint job that is lacking. The thing that makes most Maaco paint jobs so poor is the lack of prep work that they put in to it. I did not have the time or the money to take it to a premier paint shop. I have watched a man I know do a custom paint job on a cargo van. It took him roughly two weeks just to do the prep work. The paint, falking, and decals took only another 2 or 3 days. I knew what I was getting into and all that I am saying is for a low price and a short turn around period, Maaco did a very decent job.
BTW: Ghost your car is sweet. Love the Hiro and SS-III splitters.

Theres more than enough criticism, but in a thread where someones excited about what they just got/did say something nice or dont say anything it all. Its common decency.

This is what seperates us from the rest of the forums.

I don't care if you criticize, but "haha Maaco" is not doing it. Take a look at the painting and point out specific things if you see something. I'm not going to argue anything else, but SVT if you don't like the site do not come. Back on topic, I would actually suggest Maaco if you have the time to do the prep work yourself, but are on a tight budget.

I am concidering doing a new paint job as well, and am concidering a maaco job. From what i've read, you should do the prep work yourself. My question though is, what is involved in the preping? Sanding down the entire car to the metel? Or just smothing it all out?

On 95% of paint jobs you do not need to strip the car down to bare metal. Unless the paint is completly messed up, or you are doing a radical color change, basically all you need to do it rough sand the car. I have heard different things for sandpaper, i used 80 grit and then 220 grit around the edges. I was told after I had it painted that 220 would have been best to start and some 320 later. Basically, I just made sure that the shine was gone from the original paint. My biggest concern for you would be to make sure that you get along all the edges ( along the tail lights, around the windows, etc) The paint job can only be as good as the prep job.

Man. I went to a local shop and they wanted 3500 for Black Sand Pearl including jambs and the engine bay (i think the bay) and to pull a few dents. What do you think?

got paint chips here and there; looks like they didn't prep some areas properly. its still minor at this point and it'll be fixed when the car goes in next but I can tell its going to be a problem in the long-run. I wish I had just done a swap, or dropped another grand for a job that'll look pristine for years to come .. oh well, you live and you learn
