Vehicle and Traffic Law- NY state
§ 375

31. Mufflers and exhaust systems. Prevention of noise. Every motor vehicle, operated or driven upon the highways of the state, shall at all times be equipped with an adequate muffler and exhaust system in constant operation and properly maintained to prevent any excessive or unusual noise and no such muffler or exhaust system shall be equipped with cut-out, bypass, or similar device. No person shall modify muffler or exhaust system, in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor or exhaust system of a motor vehicle above that emitted by the motor or exhaust system originally installed on the vehicle and such original muffler and exhaust system shall comply with all the requirements of this section:

A muffler is a device consisting of a series of chambers or baffle plates, or other mechanical design for the purpose of receiving exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine, and effective in reducing noise.

An exhaust system is a series of mechanical devices for the purpose of receiving exhaust from an internal combustion engine and expelling it into the atmosphere.

31-a. No person shall, in the state, sell install or use a motorcycle exhaust device without internal baffles, known as “straight pipes”.

31-b. No person shall, in the state, sell install or use a motorcycle exhaust device that is intentionally designed to allow for the internal baffling to be fully or partially removed or interchangeable. This subdivision shall not apply to a motorcycle manufactured or assembled prior to nineteen hundred seventy-nine or a motorcycle registered as a limited use vehicle or an all terrain vehicle pursuant to article forty-eight-A or forty-eight-B of this chapter.

I would record the decibel level somehow and compare it to other exhausts or tape record the sound. I know that's kinda gay, but the law just says that it has to be "adequate" and prevent any "excessive" noise. That's very subjective. You could also take a picture of it, too. The Greddy exhaust pretty much looks stock in my opinion. Also bring a copy of that law. That cop was on a power trip and just being a dick. He just targeted you because of your car.

The bold part is the one that kind of prevents you from "legally" changing your exhaust. What ever came on the car is how it must stay. I mean if you just changed the piping size up to like 3 inches and kept the stock muffler, no one would ever give you a problem. But if you get really really technical, it would be illegal because it would cause more air flow , which the original muffler was not built to handle/ filter (or however you wanna say it) and also cause more noise. Personally, i have been hassled for mine a couple times tho never ticketed, but my friend has worldcom muffler (i THINK thats the name of it), but it allows for same performance and everything as like a "greddy" muffler, but sounds stock, just a lil louder and i think i may put it on just so i do not have to worry about being bothered. To each its own.

The way it reads is that you can change your exhaust as long as it still sounds the way it did stock.

Uphere in Canada we have a really odd system with our exhausts. It has 2 pass emisions and be under 120 decimals. All of my friends with exhaust systems wen out n baught decimal readers to prove cops wrong. The ammount of times my friends have just about gotten a ticket for having exhaust systems that are "too loud". Alot of cops use their discression about weather its 2 loud or not. If u ever get pulled over in Ontairo, ask them for a decimal reader and get them to hold it 3 feet away from ur tip at a 45 degree angle and hold the car at 3000rpm. If it exceeds 120 decimals then u can get a ticket, if not u walk away scott free. lol..my buddy has an AE86 with headers, straight pipes to a resignator n thats it n hez never gotten a ticket when his exhaust is hittin 200 decimals when hez keepin reving at 3000rpm. Its about as loud as an actuall race car. So a note to keep in mind for all ontario drivers who r modifing their exhaust.

That sux dude... good luck.

Personally, I just don't think the 6gc is worth the time and effort to make it go faster, sound better, handle better, ect...

It gets me from point A to point B with no hassle, great gas milage, with little noise. Don't ever get it fast enough to need better handling... the cost to get it to go faster compared to the gains is crazy. The car isn't a performance car... it's an economy car that looks sporty and has a decent amount of get-up. Great daily driver...

Cops are real jerks and they target riced out cars or cars with modified exhuast in Elk Grove, California. It pisses me off because so many of my friends have been ticketed for having aftermarket exhuast. So now I'm skeptical of getting an exhuast. Also I have never seen a motorcycle get pulled over for having a loud exhuast, and they have the loudest exhuast on the road. Cops are just out to get us. mad.gif

My cops in georgia are pretty cool about traffic stuff. if you watch those crazy driving videos on tv a lot of them are from georgia. a friend told me that the cops here hate ricers and would hassal me. i have a sheriffs office next to my apartment and they have never given me any grief. My car is pretty damn loud. i got pulled over once and i was racing some guy. they asked me if i knew why they pulled me over and i said that my car was too loud and they laughed and said that my headlight was out and that they were just lettin me know. everybody speeds out here. drive in Atlanta and you may be shocked to see how crazy it is. fight the ticket, what harm can it do? the cop may not even show up. All i know is that i hate driving in jersey and new york.

I'll find the paperwork. But the Greddy SP system is a factory upgrade, keyword factory, because it is the same exact exhaust as the TRD. Being a factory upgrade it is legal in any state. But you'll still have to do the court thing but you can get out of it.

2nd thought, you do have an SP2 which wasnt made for our car. SP was made for our car so the factory upgrade may not work for you.

OMG you guys have some strict laws in the States, how the hell do you cope with it?????

I live in Kentucky and we can pretty much do whatever we want. Cops pretty much look the other way a lot here but then again even a lot of state cops get busted all the time for drug trafficking and stuff.

i live in louisiana and our cops don't look the other way but we can pretty much do wantever we want to our cars sans lighting regulations (underbody, etc) and tint darkness - and as long as no one calls the cops on you for noise you can make it as loud as you want

EDIT:

just realized guess our laws say f the environment you just can't make your car look the way you want lol

neons under your car - hell no!! straight pipe - why not!!

I know in certain states its illegal to modify your exhaust. My friend lived in virgnia for a few years and new it was illegal to modify his exhaust but he never got pulled for it.

I believe we have no such law in North Carolina.

We have emissions and sound ordinance, but the only time cops here do something about it is when they want to mess with you.

I`d fight that one in court if you have a document saying that the exhaust is street legal in your state.

my exhaust is really loud when reved but nice and plesent at idel, just stay on the cluch when you see a cop, or dont take it over 2 (if you have a manual) and say its for looks only.

get a flowmaster or a borla muffler that could probibly pass for a stock muffler looks wise, and say you cant exsplane the noise, you bought it that way, and assumed it was stock.
