i dont get why you guys get so good gas mileage. is keeping the rpms as low as possible not the best way, ie 35mph in 5th at like 2300rpm?

actually im not sure and i could be wrong but i find that shifting at 3-3.5k rpm is optimal in terms of fuel economy. just from my experience and understanding, the engine works harder to gain speed with a higher gear on a lower speed that was meant for a lower gear. im not sure if im explaining it right and not sure if this applies to NA motors, but this is how my 3S is. if i dont wunna go into boost, i keep it cruising/shift anywhere from 3-3.5k rpm and i wont burn so much gas.

its all about speed, the right gear for that speed, and load on the car. i dunno...i could be wrong...lol tongue.gif

I get about 28mpg in my GT, consistently. I have a K&N drop-in and I shift around 3k regularly, and about 80% of my driving is highway. I also keep the car empty of cargo, no dead weight =].

Yah, thats how Im gonna do mine from now on. I'll shift at every 2K RPM!

That's only half-true. IF you are going at a constant speed (no accelerating, no hills) then YES, it is good to be in a gear like 4th or 5th. But if you are accelerating and you shift at that low of an rpm, your engine will bog down and that uses more gas then someone accelerating and shifting around 3k-4k. Just like riding a bicycle, if you are going about 5mph and then try to accelerate in a gear like 4th or 5th, it's gonna be a lot more stressful on you then if you went through gears normally. Just about the same concept.

Celica's are pretty good stable about gas mileage, I seem to get pretty much the same mpg when I beat on it, as when I baby it.

on the freeway usualy about 3.5-4 but I only have to shift when I get one, then its just straight driving (I rarely brake 70) around town its usualy 2-2.5, and around the hood its around 1.5-2 its. my average is right about 27 mpg (I use only premium fuel) and I'm known to take off faster then nessisary.

"Cars are meant to be driven".. sansei shimas..

being able to shift at whatever rpm i want to is one of the reasons why i love manual.
just as long as i get 20+ mpg, thats good enough for me.
