As I have been searching for a 6gc to purchase, I have noticed an overabundance of convertibles for sale. Is there some major negative about the 6gc convertibles? I've read the thread about they are actually imported as hard tops and then cut down by some company in California, but outside of that what are the major downsides? Unlike many convertibles, it has a glass rear window, not that yellow-plastic junk like most.

So would you guys recommend purchasing a 6gc convertible, or should I just wait for a hard top?

hard tops look better in my opinon- besides the convertible tail lights don't look good in my opinon -

if i were you, i would keep looking for a hatchback. imho that the best look for the celica. ive never been a convertable fan of any car tho.

A lot of convertibles have a glass rear window nowadays. And most cares are made originally as a hard top and then cut by an outside company and modified to be a convertible, not just Celicas. The only cars that really come off the line as a hard top are cars that are convertible-only like the s2000, miata, saturn sky, mr2 spyder etc. I wouldn't look at that as a downside.

I would say the only disadantage to owning a convertible is the loss of frame rigidity, but unless you're doing some serious racing that's not going to make a difference at all. I would say go for it, a Celica convertible would be awesome

Convertibles do have the possibility of the motors going, which is like 1000 if you still want the top to go up and down by itself. However, you can use the top manually.

I love my convertible. It has more headroom than the hatch. Top doesn't leak at all (though it was replaced once). Wind noise is acceptable. It's a tradeoff with handling a bit, but a very fun tradeoff. Windy once you get above 55. Probably a bit more clatter over bumps. Rear seat is a little smaller and more upright. You lose cargo room and flexibility by not folding the seats down.

That's about it.

personally i never liked convertable models of any car, i don't even like targa tops
just because of performance reasons

but with our cars i think the difference in performance between a very and a st is neglegible

If you find a nice one, for your location, why not. I love the hatch personally, but if it was considerably cheaper, and easier to find, I might have compromised.

You really wouldn't like my collection. I bet my targa will outperform your hardtop...



Convertibles are fun if you live someplace you can enjoy them a majority of the time.

i'm planning on getting a mk4 as well, i'm half way there money wise
and yes, it will be a hard top

Another thing to take into account would be the fact that insurance is usually a little higher for convertibles. Personally, I would rather have a hardtop, I've had a couple friends with jeeps complain about tops leaking, but I'm not sure about Celica's. just some ideas to consider.

Yea your right. The insurance on my Celica is higher than on my Supra. I had a 89 Celica convertible that leaked like a sieve. I replaced all the seals and it was fine after that.

I would DEFINITELY recommend a 6gc convertible. There is nothing like riding with the top down, and its just a regular celica if you have a problem and need parts. There weren't many celica convertibles made and most people enjoy them so much that they hang onto theirs for a long time. I think they look better than coupes and hatchbacks top up or down. If you have the chance, pick one up soon you won't regret it!

same here, the ONLY car i would buy in a convertable is the 350z

idk...I like the looks of the 350z with the top down but with the top up they look fugly

after I get married my fiance wants me to build her a 65 mustang convertible to go with the 69 Camaro convertible that I'm going to build myself lol

My motor blew on my convertible, it was only 350 for a new motor, and easy to install... not that I've gotten around to it yet. Other than that, the windows squeak sometimes, etc etc.

i just don't like convertibles.. in general. to me, they kinda look like a shoe... hehe, i dunno, not a fan! but that's just my opinion.

I love my convertible and screw everybody else! I wouldn't ever go without one. I had one top motor go out, but I got one for 25 bucks. Thats the only problem I have had. I keep a couple of extra ones around. There really not a problem. Sound is not a problem, and I usually got 2000 watts kicking some sound at me. The bodys are reinforced to keep them from flexing. They look good with lip kits. Heres some cool ones:

I love my convertible! As far as I know there's nothing wrong with them. Except the average problem that all converts have... thatd be leaking... But even then... That can be easily fixed, and its really not as bad as some people would prolly think.

Go with one... you'll be happy with it Convertibles are always fun.
