Today after just having the body work finished on my 94 gt I ran into some problems on the way home from work this morning. Early this morning at about 6am, I pulled into work and heard a loud knocking noise coming from my engine. It was cold so I kindof forgot about it, when I started it back up again about 6 hours later the knocking noise was a little louder. I popped the hood and the first spark plug wire on my left had popped out of the engine block a little bit. I pulled the wire all the way out of the block and I looked down at the spark plug and it looked almost black, I could barely see it in the light, where as I could easily see the next spark plug. I pushed the wire plug back into the block on the spark plug but I couldn't push it all the way in. Then I started it back up, and it sounded fine for about 30 seconds, but then it vibrated the plug wire out of the hole. I was able to get it to the closest shop across the street(it was closed) while I was looking at it the engine shut off and refused to restart.

Anyone have any ideas? I checked the oil for any metal shavings, but the oil was just dark(no metal)

Could I have thrown a rod? I'm pretty upset I just finished the car the was I wanted it and now I'm ****ed!!!

are you sure the timing is right on? was the engine shaking at all before the wire jumped off the plug? i found that the wires sometimes don't fit the plugs as they should, so they aren't making good contact and slip off. thus causing it to arch. if the time is set, try matching the wires with a plug that has a real snug fit in the boot.

how do I check to see if the timing is on? you mean check if the actual timing belt is on?

no, with a timing light. check your manual to see what degree your time should be set on, i don't remember right now what it should be i think like 10 degrees. check that first, if you don't know how take it somewhere and have them do it. do you have a 5sfe or 7a?

it's a 5sfe, currently its in the parking lot of a muffler shop, I'll call first thing in the morning and have them look at it. I was wondering what the symptoms are of throwing a rod?

well, i think it would knock all the time. not just when the boot falls off the plug. let us know something when you find out, good luck.

yeah, thats what I thought, but what would cause it to not restart? Is the engine seized? I just recently replaced the starter and last night the engine was running smooth like a champ. Well if the news is I need a new engine, I'll swap a 3sgte, thats the good side.

anyone else have any ideas? I'm just nervous that my engine is screwed, I guess I'll find out in the morning.

Sounds like your spark plug wires might have fried out somwhere. I suggest you repalce your spark plugs and wires. Rod throwing usually revolves around an engine that will still somewhat work when you gass it really hard, but it will not idle.

Have you looked at it in the day light yet? The spark plug could have been loose and worked it way up untill it popped, or close to it. This would cause they wire popping and the knocking noise. Have you had the plugs out or anything? I have to check these things on mine everytime something wrong, because there's no telling what I was screwing around with that week. I'm curious to know what's wrong here.

sorry, I checked it out, and the spark plug had loosened up enough to pop out. The distributor was trying so hard to get the spart to jump the gap that it crapped out. So I replaced the distributor coil, wires, and plugs. While I was at it I changed the oil and replaced my struts with some gr2s all around. She runs and handles great.
