I remember a big debate a while back about the Celica being a sports car, well it's considered a Japanese sports car by the Wikipedia. Either way it's opinion but IMO it is seeing as it's somewhat light, good maneuverability, good looks, and can have good performance.

can't anyone write / submit an article for wikipedia?
they even have lemonparty.org on it

a FWD car can never be a sports car, I don't care what anyone says.

Our cars are economy cars with sports car bodies

Exactly...

Personally, I consider them in the class "Sports Nugget". It looks like a sports car, but it doesn't move like one! smile.gif

Regardless if it is a sports car or not, I thought that was a very informative site, and all the technical info seemed correct to me. Good find!

a 3000gt is FWD except for the VR4 which is AWD. FWD's can be sports cars too. type-r's, gs-t's... are sports cars. a sport car is not where the output of where the wheel horse power is from but the amount of WHP it produces. im my opinion a sports car can be AWD, RWD, and FWD.

If you compare even the ST to the classic sports cars of the 50's and 60's our cars eat them alive. They weren't even that fast. 0-60 under 10 seconds used to be fast back in the day and a 15 second quarter mile was the standard during the muscle car era. I think handling is a big part of being a sports car, which our cars do just fine at. Most of the exotic cars have left the realm of being a sports car and are now considered "exotics" or "super cars". I think the unofficial criteria for being a super car is 0-60 in under 5 seconds and being able to reach 150 mph. I don't think a car has to meet those standards to be a sports car.

i would have to say no. they fall under the "sporty" category, but are not what i would conider sports cars.

supra, mr2, s2000, rx7, skyline, etc...are what i would call real sports cars. meaning that they are only produced for the enthusiast in mind and are build for performance

guys, c'mon please, this is getting really old trying to justify the celicas place amongst the rest of automotive history... if you are really that insecure about what you are driving then buy something else.

call it a sports coupe, a sports car, a sport compact, an economy car, a hatchback/liftback/coupe, a ****box, an econobox, a saloon car, a rally car, a WHATEVER... it doesnt change the fact that its still only stock at 105-135 HP FWD car in the US pretty decent handling capabilities and was designed to get you from here to there and compete with the likes of the integra, (less Type-R and GSR), Civic (less the SI), the DSMs (less the GS-T, GSX, TSi), the sentra (less the SE-R), etc... they can all be mentioned in the same breath. its not a bad thing what-so-ever im not knocking anything, i loved my celica, and really miss having it (would rather have that any day of the week over my more powerful peppier Cobalt) it really just doesnt matter, you can make it into whatever suits you.

lol i wasnt insecure about what i was driving. my priorities changed... when i was a sophomore in highschool i just wanted something that looked good and was a manual, and that car was perfect. after having it up till my freshman year in college, i realized after a few autocrosses i wanted to pursue racing. The celica no longer fit the bill so i jumped on teh 3sgte bandwagon with both feet before my head and jumped behind the wheel of a MR2 turbo... started modding the crap out of it... after deciding i wanted to be competitive in racing and didnt have the money to do so in the turbo mr2, it no longer suited me, so i backed down to a stock NA mr2 to hone my skills as a driver, after a while, i will be ready to move on to something a little more powerful and have a little more freedom with the setup i am running, at that point, the MR2 will either get a complete overhaul or i will get a new car that will suit me... i am just saying, it seems like everyone has a problem with the classification their car tends to fall under.

yupp, and the porsche cayman S was designed to fall under the lowest category there is so you dont pay insurance premiums, and thats a pretty damn sporty automobile wink.gif its just how much the automaker wants to finagle the details and what they want to put in the books... its supposed to be the budget 911, so they wanted it to have budget insurance.

Be careful new guy. Elise is RWD. And I bet he was talking about the VR-4 3000GT. I believe that a FWD can be a sports car, but it's so much easier for a RWD to be one. Most higher performance FWD are family cars reworked. There are some that are real FWD sports. SRT-4, Shelby Omni, Geo Storm GSi, Starlet, Civic Si, RSX, Celica (3sge & 3sgte), Corolla and Levin, amongest others.

lol any FWD isn't a true sports car. FWD cars can be sporty yes, but IMO none are true sports cars. Yes the VR4 3000GT and GSX (not the GST) Eclipses are a little closer to sports car because theyr'e AWD, but true sports comes in the line of NSX, Corvette, Supra, S2000, Cobra R, Porsche 911, Lotus Elise, etc.

And to the guy who thought the Lotus Elise was FWD...I hope that was just a misunderstanding haha
