Just a couple of questions, I was on the "how to" section of 6gc and I'm interested in making my own cold air intake.
I was just wondering the difference in a self made one, and one made from Injen or Dr.Cai difference in Performance, Quality, Sound? if the differences are Signifigant then I might just buy one, but if there isn't THAT much of a difference I think it would be pretty fun to make my own, cheap and something to be proud of. one more question, what's a bypass valve and where in the intake would it go? |

self made intakes are intakes made by yourself. the injen intake is produced by a bigwig company, and the dr cai is john dolecek's dolecek racing cold air intake that he manufactures himself. definitely a good investment.
the bypass valve decreases the chance of water getting sucked up into your engine via the air intake. it goes along the inlet piping and if the pressure drops within the pipe it stops air from coming in through the filter and comes in through the valve instead. |

dex it depends on a whole bunch of things. Sound it affected by the filter type, and diameter of your piping. Performance is dependant on the quality of the system. If you spend a lot of time making mandrel style bends (equal diameter around bends), and make sure there is nothing to restrict air flow, you will be cool.

I love my Dr CAI. When I first turn on my car all I hear is this deep vaccum sound coming from the intake. It sounds awesome and I could feel a slight difference in HP as oppossed to my old drop in filter.

pvc will work just fine (should wrap it in heat wrap for cautionary measures) the problem with pvc is that it doesn't insulate from heat as well as an alloy cai would.
and blackcelliman, i know what you mean, i love that whirring vacuum sound when it starts up |

I have made many different cold air intakes for my 95 5FSE motor. They have all worked great. Sizes ranging from 2"-4". Currently I have a 2"-3"-4" made out of vent ducting for an A/C system with a 4" K&N cone filter. There is a HP gain around 3100-4900+RPM and nice deep tone (sounds like I have exhaust!) Im not sure how much of a HP gain but sure beats my brothers $175 Iceman in his Integra and I only spent $75! Im planning to add a turbo to my motor and will be making another intake setup for that probably out of 2.5" or 3" aluminum exhaust pipe. If you like to build things and do the modifications your self making your own short ram/cold air intake is the way to go. If you have the money to spend and just want something everyone else has go with a Injen or Dr.Cai. Any questions or pics email me.

You're HP gain is probably 0.5 to 1.0. You can't gain much with just a filter, especially with a low-end motor. Just take HyperDeathKill as an example. He's invested a lot, but didn't gain very much. The only time an exhaust, air filter, spark plug wires, etc will make a significant difference in HP gains is with a high-end motor (i.e. 3S-GTE, V6, etc...) |

i have a 97 5s-fe. i went to my local muffler shop had 3' tube custom bent. went to the hardware store bought the rubber connections. and a couple of clampes. a by-pass filter and was out $70 four full cold air.
and if you don't want crome you can use heat resitent paint and paint it. |
