Ok, i know there is a sticky on this but i am still confused. I did the 3sgte swap and used my 5s tranny. all was well but now the diff bearing is shot and i guess i might as well swap the tranny. my friend has a 91 mr2 with a 5s in it , what will i need to do to put this tranny into my celica and make it work. I know it bolts to the engine but what about cables, axles , ect. ..... will it work , sorry to make anyone repeat this headache, just lost

If it's the same transmissioin, shouldn't it be a direct swap? Why is your friend giving you his transmission, even if there's something wrong with it you might be able to scrap parts from both tranx (yours and his) and be able to make one working transmission. Also when you swapped in the 3SGTE did you do any beafing up of the tranx? Because the 5s was built with 130bhp in mind while your new engine is putting out +260bhp.

The Trannies can take a punch. Manny (presure2) is pushing 235 hp on a 200K miles 5S tranny. And Defgeph 240+ whp on a 3S-ge tranny. Im also running 255bhp on a 3S-GE now for almost 2 months with no problems.

But the shiftingcables are ment to be the other way around on a MR2 since the engine is placed in the back instead of the front.

I thought he had at least upgraded his clutch, and if he hasn't he should consider it.

Upgrade your Clutch is a smart thing to do. I took the risc of putting a new OEM 3S-GE clutch in it when swapped. Holding all the (still stock) gte power with no problems. Maybe the wear will be more then with the normal engine on it but hey thats fine by me.

Ok, so using the mr tranny sounds like too much of a headache, what happened was my diff bearing in my current tranny is shot. i assume that you must crack the tranny apart to change this and figured i might as well just put a rebuilt tranny on there rather than just changing out the bearing, seams to me that the rebuilt tranny will be the easier way to go. I just dont have time to make this complex. anyone know where i can get a used 5s tranny 5 speed manual. any good cheap sites out there? also if the diff bearing is a easy fix let me know, especially if there is way to get the bearing out and replaced without having to move or remove the 3sgte , not looking forward to this.

Sean

ps its been a while for me, whats the tranny called , cant see it on there

You HAVE TO pull the tranny out to open the diff... and yeah... it's hard if you don't know what you're doing, and you can perma screw up if you don't know what you're doing...

Oh... and n/a MR2's have the same tranny as the Celica GT's... except of course the shifter bracket...
